Cory Monteith saw 'Broken Arrow' 23 times in the theater. What's your record?

Cory-MonteithImage Credit: Everett Collection; Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosGlee star Cory Monteith has revealed that he saw the 1996 John Travolta movie Broken Arrow 23 times in the theater. “Me and one friend went over and over again and watched this movie. Sometimes we paid and sometimes we didn’t,” he tells Ellen DeGeneres on today’s show. “We would yell the lines of the movie at the screen, and people would be leaving and calling us names. When I met him [John Travolta] at the Super Bowl, I was like, ‘I have to tell you something. I saw Broken Arrow 23 times,’ which he was in with Christian Slater. And he was like, ‘Really, wow.’ He was super excited.” If you can’t remember this movie — and that was the goal for most who saw it — watch the trailer below. I recall despising Travolta’s performance when I watched it in theaters (though I did buy the movie’s soundtrack afterward), but viewing the preview now, I’m thinking my taste for the awesomely bad had just not yet been fully acquired. I think I need to revisit.

In the meantime, it’s time for you to confess: What movie have you seen the most times in the theater? If memory serves me correctly, my mother, sister, and I saw Dirty Dancing six times. (After that, I’ve just seen a number of films, including Waterworld, twice.) My colleague Kate Ward could have the best story ever: She saw Moulin Rouge! five times — and hated it the first three. What? “I actually saw it, walked out, then brought my dad to show him how awful it was, then brought my friends to show them how awful it was, and then, by viewing No. 4, realized I actually loved it,” she says. Your turn.

Being 13 years old in 1977 I was the perfect age to be swept up by Star Wars. I saw it 13 times in the theater (Empire 11 and Jedi 6 when they came out)

My personal favorite statistic was seeing The Princess Bride four weekends in a row in the theater each time with a different person or group of people.

    • LibbyP

I was 9 and saw it 8 times. I love the Princess Bride as well but missed it in the theater.

      • MelindaB

I missed TPB in the theater, too, because we had a baby at home at the time, and we were too broke to go to movies, anyway. I only discovered it on VHS several years later.

Return of the Jedi, like 6 times… Not always by choice. The Care Bears movie was always sold out for like a week straight.

    • Rolo Tomasi

      9 times for Star Wars

    • orville

I was around 10 for The Empire Strikes Back. A friend and I went to see it at least 10 times that year. Not much came to our little town, so we were obsessed. And with the re-releases, I’ve probably managed 15 total.

    • Cygnus

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Saw 4 times in theatre.

Nice post. I study one thing more challenging on tolatly different blogs everyday. It can at all times be stimulating to learn content from different writers and apply slightly something from their store. I’d prefer to make use of some with the content material on my blog whether you don’t mind. Natually I’ll give you a hyperlink on your net blog. Thanks for sharing.

Shrek 2 and The Phantom of the Opera (with Gerard Butler/Emmy Rossum) were my big repeats (over 5 times each), followed closely by He’s Not That Into You. It’s a problem when my friends don’t share the same schedule.

    • kat

lol yes. My 13-year-old self was so obsessed with The Phantom of the Opera. I think I saw that movie about 5 or 6 times at the theater.

      • Willow

My best friend and I went, and she HATES musicals, but she loved POTO. I think we saw it once a week for six weeks straight.

  • Comixchick

I practically lived at the theater when “Star Wars” was out. I stopped counting after 42 times.

  • HD

Mamma Mia. 10 times. Please don’t judge.

    • Remy

I don’t blame you. I watched it almost that many times in one weekend when I saw in on one of the movie channels.

  • Amber

I think I saw Titanic 12 times in the theater. In my defense, I was a senior in High School, and I worked at the theater. So I didn’t pay once.

    • Rachel

My record is that I saw Titanic 4 times in the theater.

    • Jocelyn

I also saw Titanic 12 times in theaters, and I paid for every viewing. That’s what happens to 14 year old girls with extra babysitting money! I also saw That Thing You Do 5 times in theaters, but it was $2 at a theater down the street, and I went with a friend everyday after school for a week…

    • DogBoy

Titanic is my champ here too. 9 for me in the theatres. Probably a dozen more times on VHS, then DVD.

    • Akane

Titanic, 4 times in the movie theater and I cried every time, then on TV and video a few more times.

    • AT

Titanic is the only movie I’ve seen more than twice in the theaters. I can’t recall whether it was 3 or 4 times. Ah, to be in high school again and the only thing you had to spend money on was movies.

  • Carl

Saw The Dark Knight four times in a matter of 24 hrs. Then saw it two more times. Epic film.

  • paul

Finding Nemo, Chicago, and The First Wives Club — saw all of them 9 times in the theatre.

    • Jo

Chicago and Slumdog Millionaire twice! And I never pay to see something twice.

      • Wes

I agree, I never see movies twice, let alone three times. But I saw Black Swan three times. I wouldn’t say that it’s my favorite movie, but I felt that I needed to take it in more.

  • Melanie

Saw “The Crow” about 5 times in the theater when it came out.

    • Chicki

Yes me too! well at least 3 time. Loved that movie.

  • Stash

When I was 13, I saw Fellowship of the Rings 7 times. It appears that 13 is a good age for obsession.

  • Remy

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – 8 times. I was trying to break my previous record of 7 (for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

    • Kim E

I too saw HP & Half Blood Prince 8 times. 1st by myself, 2nd & 3rd with brother, 4th my dad, 5th cousins, 6th friends, 7th & 8th by myself and loved it each time

  • Angel

Superman II – 46 times over the summer of 1980

    • AA

      Nice!

    • Chaz Winterbottom

My God Angel Cakes! Is that how you lost your soul?

      • Michael J

I rarely comment on these things, but a good Angel/Lorne reference made my day! Thanks, Chaz! :)

      • hlf

        Love the Lorne/Angel shout out!

    • Jenna Fawn

I dare anybody to beat that number. I am impressed and humbled.

  • laura

Worked as an usher from 1990 to 1991. Movies were free, so there is no telling which one I saw the most. But I will freely admit that myself and the other ushers watched “Hudson Hawk” and “Quick Change” MANY, MANY times. I can quote both films verbatim to this day.

    • pickle t1ts

“What kind of clown are you!?” “The cryin’ on the inside kind I guess…”

      • Lois

“Quick Change” is sooo underrated! I can’t even think of watching Tony Shaloub in anything without thinking “Blaftuma.”

  • Kyle

I saw Toy Story 3 this past summer five times.

  • AA

Speed. Fives times. I loved me some Keanu and those giant forearms he was sporting.

    • amie

Im right there with ya, saw Speed 5 times in the theaters.
