'Dead Island' trailer: Tropical zombie videogame has a mind-blowing, eye-popping promo

I rarely play videogames and usually don’t even make it to the end of online movie trailers. (I’m a supes biz career woman, what do you expect?) So imagine my surprise when I open-mouth-gaped my way through this amazing Lost-meets-The Walking Dead trailer for Dead Island (release still TBA) without reaching for my trusty ADD-enabling mouse even once! Video — and an instant reaction from actual videogame player Darren Franich — after the break.

Like I said, fascinating stuff. Darren is the flower. How embarrassing for him!

HOW FREAKING COOL DOES ‘DEAD ISLAND’ LOOK, YOU GUYS?!

I love video games, this by far is one of the most heartbreaking trailers I have seen for a game. Comparing it to LOST was spot on. This just shows that video games are a legitimate art form to be reckoned with (looking at you Roger Ebert)

I agree to a point… but Ebert has a good point as well. We aren’t being affected by the game here. This is essentially, a movie short. The ability of film to provoke our emotions was proven long ago. Video games are close, but not quite there. Here’s hoping Dead Island is as affecting a game as it is a trailer.

  • tracy bluth

That had to be the most heartbreaking video game trailer ever.

  • Holly

That was so amazing and so sad.

  • MissVampireDiaries

    Wow, that’s sad…but Zombies aren’t real so…
    I still love L4D2!!!

  • MCS

    gonna be a killer game

not so fast, many games have gorgeous cut scenes and trailers and then have awful or mediocre gameplay, after all this game has been in development for a long time, usually not a good sign.

Fair point that this beautiful trailer doesn’t necessarily translate to a good game. But I believe Techland took a break on developing Dead Island to finish and release Nail’d, so I don’t think the development time has really been that long. 4 years really isn’t that bad for a team of 80 people.

    • Kaci

      Haha, “killer”… *golf clap*, MCS.

  • Joe

If the game can live up to that trailer, I’m in.

  • therealeverton

It is a very, very good trailer. Brilliant, and yes sad.

  • nando

Kind of reminded me of L4D2 in the beginning at the hotel

  • Kaci

I had the same reaction as Darren.

  • Rebecca

Yeah, there’s no gameplay footage, but for a game trapped in limbo for the last four years, the developers did what was most important: spiked the curiosity level and immediately created a bond via the human element. It’s skillful and savvy, and I am completely hooked.

  • CML

    Brilliant trailer. I’m in!

  • Nick

    hahahaha annieeee

  • Charles

Hauntingly horrifying. But it illustrates exactly why I dislike zombie shows/movies/games. The inevitable heart breaking moment when the family member or friend goes “zombie” and either kills or has to be killed by his or her loved ones. I hate it. Although at least “Zombieland” managed to stay away from that cliche.

  • Magic Bob

    Erm.

To the guy who says ‘video games can be art’. Dude; this is a NON GAMEPLAY TRAILER.

    *facepalm for my peers*

  • mike
