This Week's Cover: The return of Reese Witherspoon

Believe it or not, it’s been two full years since Reese Witherspoon has graced a movie screen, unless you count doing the voice of a nearly 50-foot-tall animated woman in Monsters vs. Aliens. In a candid interview, the actress — who stars opposite Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson in the upcoming romantic comedy How Do You Know — explains that her break from acting wasn’t anything she planned. “I just didn’t read anything I liked,” she says. “There are a lot of really, really, really big movies about robots and things — and there’s not a part for a 34-year-old woman in a robot movie.” In the meantime, Witherspoon has kept plenty busy raising her two kids, 11-year-old Ava and 7-year-old Deacon, and dating agent Jim Toth, to whom she’s rumored to be on the verge of getting engaged. “My mom always texts me, like, ‘Are you getting married?’ ” Witherspoon says, laughing. “I’m like, ‘Mom, come on! You would know if I was getting married.’ ” What Witherspoon clearly hasn’t been doing is dwelling on any of the personal turmoil in her past, including her divorce from actor Ryan Phillippe. “My favorite quote is from Martha Stewart: ‘I have a very short memory for painful things.’ And I do. I have one of those incredible memories where I just erase painful things….I truly believe you never lose in a relationship. You’ve always gained something.”

For more from Reese Witherspoon — including her thoughts on fame, her insecurities, and her “insane” visit to the White House with Paul Rudd — pick up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, on stands Friday, December 10.

I love Reese. Great idea to put her on the cover. There’s not too many of her movies that I have not liked, and those that I haven’t were not her fault. I think she is beautiful, and I can’t wait to see her and Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz in Water For Elephants later this year.

I know!!! I just finished that AMAZING book and think she’s the perfect choice for Marlena!

      • successful

Very good points! I just met sexy girl on a dating cougar club …Seekwea’lthy.c’o’m.. and we had our first drink about 4 hours after the initial contact. We have just enough in common to get along but just enough differences to make it awesome fun! I totally recomend online dating. Ohhh and she is awesomely pretty, and so hot!!!so i want to share u this nice place!!~~

    • yeah

If by beautiful you mean ugly as hell, then, you’re right….plus a pretty bad actress also.

  • nodnarb

Seriously, just slap an Entertainment Weekly logo on top of People magazine. You’d save so much money in printing costs.

  • Henry

She looks like a man with a really good dye job and cut.

    • You Need An Eye Exam

Well, I suppose if your idea of a womanly appearance is formed by comparisons to anime pornography, your statement makes sense.

She needs to go back to the hell hole she came from. My friends are friends with her family and apparently they support Hitler and dislike all Jews. That’s why she hasn’t been in many films lately because after her divorce her hitler-worship became even more intense and now she refuses to star alongside any jews. this woman should be ashamed of herself.

    • KC

      …um, Okay.
Is Oprah still a white-slave trader, too?

      • DTO

Is that why she’s costarring with all-American Jewish guy Paul Rudd, because she’s anti-Semitic?

    • nodnarb

LOL!!! I suppose no one told her that Paul Rudd is Jewish and that his surname was changed from Rudnitzky.

      • nodnarb

And furthermore, the director of How Do You Know is James L. Brooks, who is one of the most prominent Jews in Hollywood! Believe everything you hear, people.

      • Heather

This isn’t the first time she has done a movie with Paul Rudd. She did an indepentend movie with him in the late 90’s early 00’s about taking a road trip somewhere

      • Larry David

Paul Rudd and James L. Brooks are both well known self-hating jews. They are traitors to their people. Reese is just rubbing it in our face now.

      • Eric

I could rub one out on Reese’s face.

    • Huh

She dated Jake Gyllenhaal, and he’s Jewish. So I doubt that’s true.

      • chrisq

maybe that is why she did not marry him.

    • Jerry

      Is this from Spike Lee?

    • Donna

      Hello…………anybody in there??

    • Justin

You are a cheeto-eating heifer. with no sense of intelligence.

      Piss off- jackass

    • Peter

Sure Kim. Me and the President were just discussing this in our daily briefing and we decided that you are lying.

      • Brooke

        Best. Reply. Ever.

    • jj

i went to a catholic high school in tenn. that was the brother high school to her school..and we had our senior dance with their school…she was shy, very nice, and an incredible person. very gracious, even though she had already achieved a modicum of success as a high-school actress in local stuff. you’re ignorant. she’s a very good person, and her mother was a chaperone, and very nice, as well.

    • Cris

Well, at least it’s a different psycho from the guy who comes on and claims Scarlett Johansson is a clone.

    • hc

No one listen to Kim because my cousin’s boyfriend’s dog is best friends with Kim’s aunt’s cat and they totally told me that Kim steals candy from babies and kicks old ladies in the shins. Ever since she got that really ugly perm and that nose ring that subsequently got infected (she had to undergo this really weird procedure where they removed part of her nose and replaced it with her pinkie toe) her baby-kicking has gotten more intense and refuses to even enter an Olive Garden if there’s a baby in there. This woman should be ashamed of herself.

      • nodnarb

That is my favorite thing I’ve read all day!

    • John

How can they support a dead man?

Also, yeah, what everyone else has already said about Paul Rudd, et al., being Jewish.

    • LilaFowler

So you are friends with people who are friends with anti-Semites. Does that make you any better?

    • Stosh

      Kim, good job!

      You punked all these people!

    • Redwood City

      Such a lie!!

    • Julio

I want to toss her salad.

    • Kathy

OK Kim. Put down the crack pipe and back away slowly….

  • Jerry

Natalie Portman is on her way to an Oscar for Black Swan. She should get an Ew Cover.

    • nodnarb

They have all Oscar season for that. But the fact that Tron will apparently not be making an EW cover story is exactly why I no longer subscribe to this supermarket tabloid.

      • chris

Tron can make the cover for next week. I’m happy to see Reese on the cover. So excited for her career this year. This and then Water for Elephants.

      • nodnarb

Don’t count on it. Next week should be the Best and Worst of the Year issue. If you’ll recall, last year at this time they ran Sandra Bullock on the cover instead of Avatar because apparently everyone at EW thought Avatar was going to flop. I guess we can expect a Tron cover in 6 weeks.

      • DTO

I’ve not heard much good about TRON, except that it looks great visually. Storywise, I’ve heard it’s not much good. Of course, except for Bridges and the visuals, the first one was not all that spectacular either. Whatever floats people’s boats, though.

      • nodnarb

So basically the same things people were saying about Avatar? :)

      • Dave

Avatar was a terrible movie, and Tron almost looks worse…why would they be featured?

      • nodnarb

  • Jerry

The most beautiful woman in the Usa is Playboy’s Miriam Gonzalez. She should get a pic in EW.

  • steph

At first glance, it looked like a Jennifer Aniston cover. Freaked me out! Doesn’t even really look like Reese…probably because of the angle of the pic.

    • chris

You’re right. I was wondering what the cover reminded me of. It’s a picture of Jen Aniston from her Friends days.

  • rocknmovies

Looking forward to Water for Elephants, with her and Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz.

  • chris

can’t wait to see her in How do you know and Water for elephants

    • DTO

I want to see her in HOW DO YOU KNOW THE ELEPHANTS NEED WATER!

      • DTO

I’ll be here all week. Try the veal!

      • Slimer

And…Captain Obvious tries his hand at comedy.

Seriously, that was the best obvious joke I’ve heard in a while.

  • Michael

I just love her. She is so beautiful and so talented!

  • vivi

    Go Reese!
She is talented and can play many different roles, unlike jennifer
astin who can only play the same role over and over. Loved Reese in Walking the Line.
When an actress( Aniston) has to subject another actress(Joli) to cruel comments (YEA by her comedian friend) thier career is in the toilet
Good luck to reese..she’s wonderful.I Will definately see her movie

    • DTO

Are Witherspoon and Aniston in a competition or something? Also, you’re holding Jennifer Aniston responsible for Chelsea Handler’s comments about a woman who STOLE her friend’s husband?
Also, except for early on in her career and movies like ELECTION and WALK THE LINE, when has she not played in a romantic comedy?
I like her okay, too, but don’t praise her for great range she hasn’t shown.

      • Lisa Simpson

I don’t understand this need to make everything a competition either. I like both women, and both have had some good roles and some bad roles. I wish them both continued success and better roles (something all actresses need).

    • Tamie

Seriously Vivi you are going to hold Jennifer responsible for something that came out of Chelsea’s mouth.

Grow up..Getting sick and tired of every time someone says something negative about Angelina or Brad, they want to blame Jennifer Aniston.

Really folks it’s the freaking media that continues to put Jennifer Aniston it the poor me position. Poor Jennifer dating all those HOT guys. I would love to be that depressed and sad and lonely…LOL

As far as Reese she is an beautiful and incredibly talented actress and looks gorgeous in this pic.

  • katie

Great choice, EW. Reese is a wonderful actress and seems like a great role model for women her age (and those younger). It seems that some commenters are criticizing EW for their covers; but I think it’s wonderful that EW can put a young and rising star such as Taylor Swift on the cover one week, and a ‘coming-back’ star like Reese another week. Keep up the good work, EW. I bet the interview with Reese will be interesting.

  • Fernando valdes

Who cares if she hates jewish or she loves hitler, she is an amazing actrees,i can’t wait to see her in how do you know and in water for elephants, she can act comedy and drama’s so sad that this year she was complety forgotten for an oscar nominations, i don’t know what big studio is behind the film but they didn’t do a good job to put it in consideration of academy members, just a miracle can put her in the race for best actrees nod. cause she is not in any critics lists. Personal tastes and preferences should not interesting in our love for somebody, we just have to pay atenttion in their talent as actors, and let me tell you, reese is sooooo talented.

  • tracy bluth

Reese Witherspoon hasn’t really impressed me in anything since “Walk the Line” (which she was great in) and HDYK doesn’t look like anything great. I still think it’s a little weird that she jumped from marriage to a serious relationship right away and then to another serious relationship immediately after that one.
