What do American Idol graduate Allison Iraheta, So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley, Sons of Anarchy star Katey Sagal, The Vampire Diaries hottie Paul Wesley, Fringe scene-stealer John Noble, and House sidekick Robert Sean Leonard have in common? Aside from the fact that their copious talents don’t get as much recognition as they should, the sextet of entertainers all share the distinction of having been steamrolled by Thomas Gibson, star of CBS’ chilling procedural Criminal Minds, in EW.com’s Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year bracket tournament.
Yes, folks, after a month of intense voting, fanbase lobbying, and crushed dreams, Gibson stands alone at the end of a competition that began with 64 players under-appreciated by the world, but beloved among EW readers. As the No. 8 seed in the TV bracket, EW’s team of editors clearly underestimated Gibson’s chances, but the dashing underdog could not be stopped. “Thomas Gibson IS Criminal Minds,” wrote a reader named GS. “The last couple of seasons he has done AMAZING work with the storylines he’s been given, and the show in general gets no respect. It has tons of fans but never gets recognized. That is the definition of underappreciated in my book.” Gibson’s final-round win against teenage rocker Iraheta (the No. 2 seed in the Music division) wasn’t even close, as his fans propelled him to a nifty 66.8 percent of the vote.
Click here to see how the entire bracket played out. And let’s give a tip of our hats (invisible and otherwise) to all our Under-appreciated Entertainers. Heck, if we keep up all the good vibes, maybe some of these folks will graduate to “fully appreciated” status.

Lame.
AGREED.
So lame. But whatever. It’s just another EW bracket game overrun by crazed fans.
ridiculous choice
ridiculous choice? Why? Have you ever watched criminal minds?!!! It is the most profound show I have ever watched! Finally a sophisticated approach to Human Behavior & pcycological reasons for why ‘sick’ people become ‘mass’ murderes, ‘serial killer’ etc. If society realized how ‘real’ this show is, they would be ‘scared sh–less’. It is the breakdown of ‘family’ & the abuse or neglect of children that evolves into some of the horrific criminals in history!!! Wake up & get real, this is the BEST SHOW on TV!!! and the actors who represent this ‘real’ unit for the FBI, ARE underappreciated! They ARE Criminal Minds Behavioral Analysis Unit!!!
Everyone has there opinion! !
Sour grapes.
Cat Deeley: Under appreciated once again!
so, in a weird way, isn’t she the ultimate winner of this contest? she can’t even get recognized in the Under-appreciated contest!
No hen, she is not the ‘ultimate’ winner as she stuck around for quite a while. Though your general gist is correct, clearly he is not the most under-appreciated since he won the damn thing. RSL, Katey Segal, John Noble, Paul Wesley et al are the under-appreciated!
Wow, they totally used my comment! Love it!
score!
Um NOT!!!!!!!!!!!
I think picking Thomas Gibson was great choice, he deserved to win!!
Allison Iraheta IS the real champ. I LOVE U, ALLISON!
WOOT! Totally voted for him. How random and awesome at the same time.
Woot! Woot! Me too! Totally pointless game, but at the same time the smell of victory is AWESOME!
Perfect. He should have had a movie career as a leading man.
Yay! He’s just too amazing in this show!
Amazing? Really?
your answer? really?
Can’t believe anyone watches this nasty show. It’s so gross and depressing.
Reply to “blech”
Um, Criminal Minds is amazing….
You just can’t appreciate the story lines, and THOMAS GIBSON <3 I lvoe him, he's such a good actor, and he's pretty sexy.
“Amazing” is now a meaningless term. It’s been run into the ground.
As is LOL
whats so nasty about it its no worse than csi csi miami etc plus cm has eye candy in the show(shermar moore)
Criminal Minds is MY Must See show.
I agree Treva! And I didn’t know about this contest thing before, or I would have voted for Thomas Gibson. I don’t think they write enough good stuff for him. He’s a whole lot more talented than what the show gives him to do. But at least we have this much!!
I agree with you, Treva. I watch that show daily, and it is a good show! A Must See Show!
I totally agree with all of you. I love this show. It might seem silly and stupid, but I’ve been watching him since he was on “Darma and Greg”
As much as I love CM and Hochner, he was much better 2009. Specifically “100″.
LOVE IT TO!
Agree must see TV
i agree 100%
This contest made no sense! How can you determine the most under-appreciated by having people vote for their favourite? By this logic, Gibson is the MOST appreciated out of all the contestants. LOGIC FAIL!
this!
THAT!
It wasn’t about which was the most under-appreciated, guys. It was about WHICH under-appreciated was the favorite. They were ALL under-appreciated entertainers.
Well obviously if he’s the favourite, he can’t be very under-appreciated.
Under-appreciated by the industry, not by the fans.
LOL
Boooooring.
Agreed!!!
disagree!!!
I’m sure he’s great, but John Noble is number one in my book.
Congrats to Gibson, but yes…John Noble IS THE BEST, PERIOD.
who is john noble never heard of him
who is john noble
To those saying John Noble… I am disappointed. Google him, the search engine is there for a reason. And if you can’t do that he currently is Walter from Fringe. Although this may seem biased, he truly is a talented actor!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Nothing against him, but I don’t find his acting to be anything standout on that show. I can’t believe John Noble or Robert Sean Leonard were passed by…
It was tough to vote TG over RSL, but I had to do it because Criminal Minds is underappreciated as a whole. House at least gets recognition, even though RSL doesn’t.
As for those griping about the “illogical” aspect of this contest…I understood it to be that we, the fans, are voting for entertainers that are underappreciated by CRITICS, not by fans. GS’s quote in the article perfectly sums up this notion. CM is one of the most-watched shows on television and has been consistently winning Wednesday nights in viewership, but it rarely gets recognition by critics and other media sources — and especially not by EW (unless it’s negative).
Wow. Really? Then you obviously haven’t seen enough of the show.
hes the without Hotch the show would not be what it is…People talk such bull *****
Why again wasn’t Michael Weatherly in this contest? He’s far more under-appreciated than Thomas Gibson is. I watch Criminal Minds inspite of him. The show is all about Reid and Morgan to me.
Seriously? Michael Weatherly is awesome, but he’s hardly under-appreciated.
who is michael weatherly never heard of him if hes not shermar moore than its not worth looking at
hahhahahaha morgan and reid are you serious? Thomas is the glue of the show even if he isn’t in some of the eps that much.
Michael is tony from ncis and yes I like his character but agree with anna
Can people not have opinions anymore?
And for the record, CM hasn’t been the same since Gideon left.
Agree!!! I was surprised MW didn’t make the cut. And yes he is under-appreciated, NCIS may be getting a huge ratings now but for a while it flew under many people’s radars (until the many sheep recently jumped in on the bandwagon) and even though it scores high numbers now, the cast don’t get much recognition. Plus if you base it on viewership, well Thomas Gibson should’nt have made the cut either since CM does rather well in the ratings too.
He is AWESOME any one saying anything bad about his acting should go watch the 100th episode of CM and think again
totally agree. his work in that episode was amazing, the heartbreak was so achingly real. the winner of this should have been Cat Deeley, but as a fan of criminal minds, i’m totally okay with him winning.
Exactly. The 100th episode should have netted Gibson an Emmy nomination. He gave a master class in playing all the levels.
agreed!!! but the emmys seem be to allergic to giving a nomination to anyone from a procedural not named mariska hargitay (though i do love her). he should have been nominated, he does consistently great work
Yeees! I totally agree with you cattyfan! I told a friend of mine the exact same thing! Great minds think alike! : )
Completely agree about the 100th ep. I love the series overall, but that episode was the best. I can’t believe all of the bitter people who have nothing better to do than criticize an actor because he has more fans and/or votes than their favorite person. Really?? I guess those are the people who try to bring others down to make themselves feel good. Sad.
What a joke. Ian’s fans decided to vote against Paul Wesley just so he would lose. I’ve stopped watching The Vampire Diaries because the show’s writers Juli and Kevin give the best/favor Ian’s character. The show is so predictable and BORING.
I think Wesley’s good, and definitely under appreciated within the fanbase. This poll is joke anyway, but certainly not because Wesley lost. All of EW’s polls tend to bring out the rabid fans.
Vampire Diaries – another pile of dung courtesy of the CW.
hahahha what a load of bull. I doubt they favor ian. How do they favor him anyway? It’s not predictable because for a start it doesn’t even follow the books and definately not boring
Seriously? Why would Ian’s fans vote against Paul? Love Vampire Diaries but don’t get into the fandom side of things. Don’t tell me it’s they’ve turned to a Chloe vs Lois, Dean vs Sam type of fandom war? Ugh. Both boys are fantastically awesome and both portray great characters that wouldn’t work as well if they were off on their own separately.
When I left for holidays Paul was kicking Thomas Gibson’s ass
That’s a pretty cool picture.
I have a million of him glaring like this. He’s hot!
I looked at it and thought “where’d the other half of his face go?”
should have figured Michael Slezak had something to do with this lame contest, that was the only way Allison “So – Called Rocker” Irahetagot as far as she did!.. no one else on this planet save for her parents and friends give a squat about her!.. give it up Slezak..let her fall into obsurity where she belongs!
I think, based on your rude and immature comment, that the only one that needs to fall into obscurity here is you
@Craig – No, Allison Iraheta got that far because she has fans that like her a lot. Slezak is just one more of us.
craig,
Just got to say that you are one mean SOB! To not like Allison is one thing, but you don’t have to be mean & disrespectful. Wishing or wanting an inspiring artists into obscurity & saying that no one cares about her excepy her family & friends is very disrespectful & CLASSLESS if you ask me.
Should have figured Michael Slezak had something to do with this lame contest, that was the only way Allison “So – Called Rocker” Iraheta got as far as she did!.. no one else on this planet save for her parents and friends give a squat about her!.. give it up Slezak..let her fall into obscurity where she belongs!
Yeah who knows…maybe after all this. Slezak will “scoff” change. Jeez. She is a good singer btw. Ahem.
For those of you complaining that this is a lame contest and that Ew is lame and etc…….THEN WHY ARE YOU EVEN ON HERE COMMENTING? Exactly……
My thoughts exactly!
shes a great singer and yes a rocker
BOO
Cat deely, katie segal or allison iraheta or busy philips would’ve made better entertainers of the year
