Our Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year game has now entered the third round, the so-called Sweet Sixteen in bracket parlance, and in college basketball, it’s often where Cinderallas finally turn into pumpkins. Gone are the merely mildly Under-appreciated, like the Dancing With the Stars Band and movie villain du jour Mark Strong. The competition from here on in will be fierce. For the most part, our seeding committee did an excellent job, but all eyes — okay, some eyes — are on No. 16-seed Karl Urban (Red), who has already upset No.1 Pete Postlethwaite and No. 9 Rebecca Hall. Does he have the juice to keep it going against fellow underdog Stanley Tucci, a 13-seed? Or will Tucci benefit from the imminent wave of Burlesque buzz and send Urban packing? Thomas Gibson (Criminal Minds) edged John Noble (Fringe) in the second round by only 1.2 points, so he has his work cut out for him this time, facing Paul Wesley. The Vampire Diaries star has benefited from a cadre of rabid online support, and Gibson will need every last Chicago Hope and Dharma & Greg fan to log-in to keep his momentum going.
Top-seeded Cat Deeley has been on cruise control so far, clobbering Chris Lambton in the last round by more than 67 points! Good luck, Tom Bergeron. Maybe Bristol Palin’s fans can lend you a lift in your showdown with the So You Think You Can Dance host. In the Music bracket, top-seeded Robyn faces No. 4 Janelle Monáe, and the stylish Monáe will need to walk the “Tightrope” in this “Cold War” and not give up “Without a Fight” or … um, “Neon Gumbo”? Yeah, four song titles was simple a bridge too far. Don’t hold my failings against Monáe, or any of the other combatants. Be sure to vote for your faves after the jump, and click here to see the entire bracket and previous results.

Robyn < Janelle Monae. Sad to she is losing by so much.
as much as I love Robyn, I have agree. Janelle is on a whole new level. I think the fact that Janelle is losing shows just how under-appreciated that she is lol. Doesn’t that make you think? That maybe the “losers” of this contest are the actual winner, and that the “winners” are the actual losers. lol just a thought.
considering that Robyn’s been charting for 15 years in at least two languages while serving as a UNICEF ambassador… i’m gonna have to disagree.
Maybe ppl aren’t voting for Janelle because she’s more successful and mainstream than Robyn?
@Zack – She is more successful & mainstream? I must be more out of the loop than I thought, because I’ve never heard of Janelle.
LOL. Jenna, that’s so clever and kinda true. LOL
If you’ve never heard of Janelle Monae, you should. Pronto. Brilliant kid – seriously. She and Bruno Mars are prodigys.
Yes, I do, since choosing Robyn over Sia was enough to keep me from voting ever again
You make SO much sense. I second you.
I saw both in concert this year so that was like Sophie’s Choice. I picked Janelle though.
Not really the same level as Sophie’s Choice though, is it?
That’s what the “Like” part was for. Similes are hard.
go thomas gibson i love him in criminal minds and he should have one an emmy for his work last season
I think he was fantastic last season but comparing Thomas Gibson’s work in the whole series of Criminal Minds with John Noble’s work in the whole series of Fringe – it’s a travesty that Thomas edged him out, John kicked his ass in talent and underappreciation (Fringe and it’s actors have a tiny viewership and barely any promotion compared to Criminal Minds).
Thus I’m spitefully voting for Paul. Paul and his beautiful abs.
I’ll admit that I’ve never seen Fringe so I don’t have much basis for comparison between the two, but I do know that Thomas excels largely in part to how subtle he is. I think that’s why so many people, even just casual fans of his shows, don’t realize exactly how much much talent he has. Sure, last season he was absolutely fantastic, but those were more obvious moments and story lines. I think TG does an incredible job of bringing out the most of all the little moments in any script without needing to blow them up to make sure everyone knows what he’s doing.
Karl Urban is unappreciated but not by me. Fantastic in every movie he’s in, even Doom.
amen!
This catagory seriously makes my brain want to explode. They are both crazy fantastic actors who pop up in everything and you see them and say “OH MAN HE WAS IN THAT OTHER MOVIE!”….but I have to give the edge to Karl because he makes crappy movies watchable (i.e. Doom and Ghost Ship)
Nor by me. I can’t believe I’ve been a fan for a dozen years now. By far the longest streak for any actor I like XD
Cat Deeley for the win!
Hell yeah!
I LOVE Tom, but I think he’s actually very appreciated. He’s gotten Emmy nominations, at least. Cat Deeley is always snubbed, so I had to go with her. No offense, Tom!
I was going to say Cat was nominated, but realized I was thinking of Heidi Klum. Oh, Cat and her British charm…
I agree, I like Tom too, but he is one of the more appreciated hosts on TV right now. So Cat Deeley ftw.
Cat Deeley is snubbed for good reason. She is freaking annoying the worst part of SYTYCD
You’re crazy Liz. Cat is awesome. She’s always super friendly and natural. Not very many hosts are. I wish her and Jeff Probst would have a hosting super baby. Cat ftw!!
Cat is fantastic! That’s a great idea, Paige.
I can’t believe John Noble lost to Thomas Gibson. He really IS underappreciated, I guess.
What they ought to do is take the loser of each pair & put them up against the other losers, if this is for most under-appreciated star. Because if they lose, they’re obviously not appreciated. But then that would be thinking logically…
I couldn’t believe John Noble LOST the last round. Sorry, but I had to vote against Gibson just for ridiculously taking down THE MOST UNDER-APPRECIATED actor on TV.
I gotta agree there: if there is one person that I’d give an award to (for acting) this year, it would go to John Noble. He’s astonishing.
Ya I am SUPER SHOCKED John Noble lost. Sigh.
But I’m glad Paul Wesley still has a chance! SEASON 1 of TVD was Damon’s time but Season 2… Wesley has been AMAZING
i agree. his emotional scenes with elena have been phenomenal.
He was amazing in that break-up scene. I really wanted John Noble to take the thing but now I’m backing Paul.
Anyway like pede suggested above, it just obviously shows how under-appreciated the ‘losers’ really are (he had barely a chance against an actor in the highly watched Criminal Minds).
Stanley Tucci is not really that ubder-appreciated, I mean the guy got an Oscar nomination and he is getting a lot of buzz over Burlesque, he’s been having some pretty good time in my opinion, plus critics love him. Karl Urban is waaaayyy more under-appreciated
I’VE BEEN SAYING THIS EVERY TIME HIS NAME COMES UP ON THIS DAMN POLL.
Thanks. I couldn’t decide between them because they are both amazing, but you’re right. Urban it is!
No. NOOOOOOO. There is no way Noble lost!!!!!!!!!!!
Unvincible?
That’s what I was thinking!
Yeah – is that a word?
Tom looks for Hidden Gems! How can you not vote for him? He’s perfection.
“Word to your mother.” S’all I’m sayin’.
OK, so the thing is, everybody loves Stanley Tucci. I really don’t think of him as under-appreciated, but Karl Urban – people don’t even remember his name! So I had to vote for Karl.
That’s hilarious! I had to remind my friend (who is usually so very good with actors’ names) what his name was like three times after we saw Red. I LOVE Karl Urban! I told her I learned his name after I saw him in The Two Towers.
Stanley Tucci is brilliant, no question. But he’s been nominated for an Oscar, has won several Emmys and Golden Globes, and has been nominated for piles of critics’ choice awards of various kinds. It’s hard to argue that someone is under-appreciated after all that.
I love Karl Urban. he is so painfully under-appreciated it makes me cry. Also Thomas Gibson ftw as well. Do go from dharma and greg to criminal minds. and his work last season and this season has been phenomenal. I cried so freaking hard during the 100th episode, it was amazingly written and brilliantly acted.
I voted for Karl. I’ve loved him since back in the Xena days. I don’t think he’ll win, but I appreciate him.
