MTV's 'Teen Wolf' remake teaser trailer: And this is a remake how, exactly?

I try to keep an open mind, but I can’t say the teaser trailer for MTV’s Teen Wolf remake has won me over. In fact, I find myself at a loss.

The most glaring reason for my confusion is the decision to peg this TV project a “remake.” The only thing it seems to have in common with the Michael J. Fox classic is that the main character is a sports-playing teenage wolf. That’s about it. The main character, Scott (played by Tyler Posey), becomes a werewolf after being bitten (not as a result of his genetics), he isn’t charmingly adorable in his werewolf form, and (the greatest offense) he plays lacrosse!

Had they set the remake label aside, perhaps I’d be more forgiving and be able to view the show as a standalone series — one that by the looks of it is a little Twilight, a little Vampire Diaries, and very much not my cup of tea. I’ll give it a chance, though. I hopped on the TVD train a little late because I was afraid it was like Twilight. (It was not in the least bit!) I’d hate to once again miss out on something compelling because I didn’t give it a shot. Check it out and see for yourself:

What do you think, PopWatchers? Does the “remake” tag bother you? (What’s so wrong about standing alone?) What’s your first impression? And will you tune in?

It actually doesn’t look that bad.

    • Karate Pants

Ha! I was slamming it just as you were giving it a chance.

  • Karate Pants

This is very Twilight-y indeed, and NOT a remake.
I think I’ll stick with the cheesetastic original, thanks – but I’m sure this will appeal to the tween sparkle army.

  • Sean

Where is Styles at or Boof?

  • IE33

You know, people bitch about MTV’s Skins, saying it is a carbon copy of the original show, and now you bitch about Teen Wolf because it’s too different compared to the original movie? Well… as long as there’s a reason to complain, right?

I mean, it’s MTV. Let’s just trash whatever they do, because you’re always gonna have tones of cliche comments how horrible/pathetic/the devil MTV is. It’s kinda getting old.

I agree. these new MTV scripted shows are actually quite good. Why the constant critiques? And no one ever said it was an actual remake

      • Laney

I agree too…looks like MTV is finally moving in the right direction. From what I’ve heard the show’s creators have never called it a remake…its a “REBOOT”…big difference…they’ve always claimed it was to be very different than the original. I saw this at Comicon over the summer and this teaser doesn’t do the show justice at all…the pilot is really, really good…and there IS a Stiles who, in my opinion, was the best part of the footage I saw at Comicon…really hilariously funny kid. So there is some humor. I will definitely check it out when it airs. I think its going to be good. I too am getting tired of all the mtv bashing.

ANYTHING the eMpTyVee makes sucks, how about that?

The differences in tone between the film and series do not seem to be much different than changes made to Buffy the Vampire in its adaptation from movie to TV.

    • TheRealEverton

The difference was the film was a massive switch I’n tone from the script to the film. The TV show just gave Joss Wheddon the chance to the story as he intended it.

Using a “brand name” to help sell a show or movie can be annoying; for example the TEAM based Mission Impossible TV show and turning it into a solo super spy, with friends who help out for 10 minutes in the middle Tom Cruise advert. They could have written either of the first 2 films and called it anything. What matters is if the dhow / film is any good. Watch it before you judge, but of course if it doesn’t matter if it looks like something you’d hate.

Haha, I just bought Teen Wolf (and Teen Wolf 2 – package deal!!) for the sheer camp factor. The first one’s actually really charming, mostly because Michael J. Fox has charisma coming out of his butt. They’d better have a charismatic lead, and I agree with Sean – where are Styles and Boof?!

  • Stephanie T.

This looks more like an updated version of I was a Teenage Werewolf than it does Teen Wolf. I have to agree that it’s like what happened to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

  • Summer

Yeah, it is like what happened to Buffy…except for the fact that Joss Whedon was responsible for writing the script of both the movie (the producers screwed him on that) and the television series.

The behind-the-scenes factors of this remake are very, very different, when compared to that, and it’s hard not to think that they’re jumping onto the Twilight train. I hope this turns out to be another Vampire Diaries…but I really doubt it.

  • philsbbgrl

it doesn’t look bad, but its not a “teen wolf” remake. it looks more like a remake of that movie “cursed”

  • Kurei

I don’t think the point is about re-booting. I think its really they’re trying to cash in on a trend and this film doesn’t really offer anything new or anything we haven’t seen before. Its just a bunch of pretty people in a setting that is marketed toward people who are into that thing now. And they’re using a name that is already established to bring in old fans or at least people who have heard of or watched the original.

    • Caio

Hi there, sorry but i don’t know your name. Anyway i have to say how much i love what you’re doing. So i’m writing to you in order to give you my depeest thoughts. Definitely all the remake project make sense. Hardwar is a game that i discover many years ago, and i was so much impressed about it as much i was frustrated about its abandon state. I knew everything about the game, as a great game deserve full attention. Few people plus Ian Martin, they were already trying to improve the main game. The standalone project will definitely boosts the game through internet. Because, in my point of view, hardwar was just missing the people to fully enjoy the experience online. Maybe hardwar was too little space in order to let many people to play on it. A bigger enviroment, like any other space trader game, will fit the issue. Starting with the hangars, just improving hangars in a way that you can explore them inside, for example like navigating on internet, each hangar offers you different services, not only for shopping or storage purposes. Here it’s where you can expand the sponsor ideas. I don’t suggest to put macdonald fastfood in the game, but since i play the game the first time, i thought about how much the game could improve drastically if it could have an inside world to explore, and why not internet itself, or websites, or companies, or artistic performances. This will make of the game a new social network that we cannot imagine how much big could it become. Finally in that way, not only few but many people will be interested to experience hardwar. Hardwar is not just a fighting combat game and its little enviroment was designed to give to any player an amazing experience of dinamic virtual world. That’s why many other games online on internet they copied from hardwar giving to players just the online experience, but missing the principal spirit of hardwar, the atmosphere of a living virtual AI world. I hope all this matter could be interesting for you. Feel free to contact me if you want to and keep in touch anyway. I’ll love to test your effort and i wish you all the best! Daniel

lets just hope nobody pulls out their wang when they win the lacrosse championships

This is a new werious take and will appeal to many twilight fans and people who love fantasy films, especially the high school age. It is well written, acted, and scripted, and is sure to be a “HIT”

  • Gazal sabeti

I think the show is going to be a hit. I watched the actors on set and think they did an amazing job. I think it’s much better than most of these wolf movies that have been coming out.

  • Kris

I think it looks pretty good, but definitely not a remake.

  • Katie

Does anyone know what song is playing during the “The Girl” screen?
