Tom Cruise in talks to bring Maverick back for 'big role' in 'Top Gun 2', says director Tony Scott

Tony-ScottImage Credit: Steve Granitz/; Everett CollectionTom Cruise may be feeling the need for speed again sometime soon. High-flying rumors have been circulating about the much-anticipated Top Gun sequel and whether or not Cruise would be returning his iconic star-cementing role as the fighter-pilot Maverick. Now director Tony Scott has told EW that the star is indeed in talks to come back for Top Gun 2, and, if he does, he would be playing a “big role” in the story. “We have been talking with Tom, definitely,” says Scott. This comes after screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie sent an email to Vulture stating, “There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role.”

But while Cruise may possibly return to the role he played 24 years ago, the world will have changed since his days flying Tomcats with Iceman and the late, great Goose. “It’s not a remake and it’s not a reinvention,” Scott says about the project. “It’s about the end of an era, the end of the era of the fighter pilot … There are these kids who sit in trailers in Nevada playing war games on computers, and they’re the ones that control these drones 10,000 miles away. That’s the world we’ll be focusing on.”

What do you think about this news, PopWatchers? Happy to hear Cruise might be our wing-man once more?

Top Gun is one of my all-time favorite movies. If they are going to do a Top Gun 2, it better be done right.

I saw TG for the first time a few months back and really liked it but if they make a sequel, it should be a passing of the torch kind of story. Doesn’t mean Tom doesn’t deserve or warrant a large role but I don’t think he should be the star, story-wise.

Always willing to give a Cruise film a chance. A Top Gun meets War games would be great.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

Will “Take My Breathe Away” be in the soundtrack?

If you’ve seen any recent pictures of Kelly McGillis, I think it’s safe to say she won’t be returning. Maybe Goose’s kid can be the young hot shot pilot this time around. No doubt that role would go to Shia LaBeouf. Meg Ryan could come back, and she and Mav could fall in love. Val Kilmer could use the work, Ice Man could be out of the closet and living with Rick Rossovich.

    • Jen

Ice Man gay? LOL…thought that tan & bleach blonde hair said something!

  • Chantal

Nah, Kelly McGillis won’t nail it this time. Tom Cruise still looks as good even though I am not a fan. I have stopped watching movies of him since the Oprah craziness.

Well, if I was banging Katie Holmes, I would be jumping on couches too. I wasn’t crazy about all the scientology talk, but he soon learned to shut up about that, so I’ll gladly go see a new Top Gun movie.

You stopped watching Tom Cruise movies just because he jumped on Oprah’s couch?

The Mel Gibson fiasco safely knocked Tom Cruise out of the spotlight for most off-putting actor. Now Mel has to wait for Tom Hanks to murder the pope before he has a shot at redemption. And even that may not work.

Perhaps Maverick will become a cargo transport pilot – the only one who can fly a plane large and powerful enough to haul around Val Kilmer.

    • hf

Iceman could be part of the Bear community. But who would play his cub?

    • C

You mean a cargo plane full of rubber dog **** out of Hong Kong?

The only thing that sucked about Top Gun was Tom Cruise…would be cool if they bring back Tom Skeritt and Michael Ironside…they may be senior citizens now…but they can both kick ass!!

  • Jed

I didn’t even know they were doing a sequel to this. Hollywood really is running out of ideas now.

    • Templar

Partly, yes. Another reason is that the Cruise generation is hitting the nostalgia stage. Nothing seems as good as what we remember about our 20s & 30s. It’s the same thing that keeps seniors going to Graceland and going to Las Vegas to watch has-beens perform.

  • Sam

I wouldn’t watch him for free on TV. After the way he talked about Brooke Shields….right, he knows more than a doctor. He turned into (or maybe always was) an a$$hole.
All 5 feet, 6 inches of him.

    • Templar

Considering the rash of malpractice suits all over the country, and the plethora of caveats against prescription drugs, I wouldn’t rule out him knowing more than a lot of doctors. I don’t think he should have jumped on Brooke as he did, but he’s right about the pill for every ill madness.

      • hob

I would definately rule out Tom Cruise knowing more than a lot of doctors.

      • Walrus

But he does own his own ultrasound machine :)

  • bruno

    let it go cruise.

  • Yolanda

Taylor Lautner should be the pilot Maverick mentors. I heard he had been mentioned as a possible lead in the past.

    • Piers

Taylor Lautner should go rehab houses with Vanilla Ice.

  • SS

I watched Top Gun so many times as a kid that I had it practically memorized. When we last left Maverick, he was about to become a Top Gun instructor, so I’d love to know how that’s gone. I would definitely see Top Gun 2, although it’s a different era, and no Goose makes me sad.

  • The Toohaada

The Baby Toohaada is thrilled that top gun will fight Godzilla. She has been laughing and singing since she heard the news. The joy has returned.

  • baze

no don’t rest in peace. come back and do it again.

Top Gun is one of those movies that #i just never understood the fuss about. It wasn’t even a good “bad movie” for me. Then again, despite being in 2 or 3 good 20th Century films and having 3 or 4 decent 20th century performances dragged out of him; I think Tom Cruise didn’t master a regular decent [erformance until this century; not too long before the couch madness maybe? Sometime around Minority Report anyway. I don’t agree with his “religion”, or naming people when he was making a, partially valid (PARTIALLY) about the eagerness of the medical profession to medicate medical problems (Look back at the treatment of Women and / people of African descent in The UK & The US over the past 150 years or so); AND Katie Holmes is barely a half decent actress, but she’s good for him and things like his role in Tropic Thunder might not have happened pre-couch / pre-Katie.
