Who are the funniest animated movie characters of all time?

animated-charactersI’ve had Friday, Nov. 5 circled, starred, and highlighted on my calendar for a while, PopWatchers (and not because it’s Guy Fawkes Night…). No, because Will Ferrell plays a deliciously evil supervillain in Megamind (along with Tina Fey, Brad Pitt, and Jonah Hill), which hits theaters tomorrow. And since Ferrell knows all-too-well how to transform himself into an evil villain (see: Zoolander‘s Mugatu), there’s a pretty good chance he’ll be as, if not more, hilarious as an animated one, right? We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out, but could Megamind be the funniest animated movie character of all time?

Of course, the blue evil-doer does have some stiff competition. Tons of great actors have lent their voices and comedic timing to animated films, creating some of the most lovable and laugh-inducing characters: Ellen DeGeneres’ was a forgetful, whale-speaking fish Dory (“Maybe a different dialect?”) in Finding Nemo, and Eddie Murphy played an actual smart-ass in not one, but four Shrek installments. But did these recent characters tickle your funny bone as much as characters in some of Disney’s classics? Going back to the studio’s heyday, Aladdin’s loyal servant Genie had an endless supply of impressions at the ready, thanks to Robin Williams, and the singing duo/lifestyle gurus Timon and Pumbaa (Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella) in The Lion King never failed to deliver a memorable phrase… for the rest of your days.

So tell me, what’s a motto with you, PopWatchers? Who do you think is the funniest animated movie character of all time?

    Homer J. Simpson.

    • Tajah

      WOOT!

    • Jake

      Yep.

  • Chasmosaur

I personally love Edna Mode (aka “E”) from The Incredibles. It’s a small role, but a highly memorable one.

    • Tammy

I was going to say that! Hilarity insues! :D

    • Mr. Holloway

Definitely made me rethink capes on superhero costumes.

      • amj

        LOL, yes it does!

    • Gym

I never comment on articles, “It distracts from da now!” I love Edna

    • The Other Guy

      Defintely Edna Mode
      Or Dug from Up

    • MaiTaiTranny29

      Darling, you push too hard.

      • suzyq

“I’m sure that I don’t know, dahling…Luck favors the prepared.”

    • AT

And machine washable, darling. That’s a new feature.

    • Carla

I agree! Edna Mode is the shizz!

  • ragu

mike wazowski from Montsters Inc!! still my favorite pixar movie

    • Sue1

Mine too, and one of my favorite characters.

    • Cheri

Ooh, one of my fave movies, but I prefer the little girl. She made me giggle just looking at her!

      • aps

Cheri…so right!!! everytime Boo came on screen i have a big smile and a little giggle. I don’t know how, but that kid is the most adorable and (because of the urge to giggle)one of the funniest animated creations ever.

      • Carla

        KITTY!!!!!!!!!!!

    • amj

Oh, I cannot believe I forgot Mike and Sully on Monsters Inc. in my posting. Funny stuff. “Kitty”

    • Peter

If you’re going Monsters Inc, it has to be Roz. Nothing like growling “You didn’t turn in your paper work” when some bureaucrat is after you at work.

  • AA

    Bugs Bunny.

    • Caiti

Yaaay! I totally agree. I am still mad at the world for deeming Bugs Bunny politically incorrect. Actually, in retrospect, maybe that’s why he’s funny?

      • Carla

Bugs and all the looney toons were great, because the writers and animators understood that what made the cartoons funny, was the fact that they were writing grown up jokes and aiming them at children. I grew up on Looney Toons, and I am well adjusted, and have an excellent vocabulary!

  • mattabracadabra

    Millhouse van Houten.

    Nuff said.

    • LOL

      Only a-holes use “Nuff said.”

    • Jimmy McNulty

      Everything’s looking up Milhouse!

      • Peter

        “coming up”.

    • Peter

Was he even in the movie?

  • Karate Pants

    Only movies? Or TV too?
My picks for funniest animated movie characters would have to go to (The Fantastic) Mr. Fox, Dory, and King Julian. Honorable mention to the unintentionally hilarious, sweet, and pathetic Max (the Grinch’s dog).

    • AA

Oooooh, Fantastic Mr. Fox… fantastic choice!!

      • lettergirl

that is a cussing good choice!!

    • Peter

I think by “animated movie characters” it means movies and not TV.

    • DaniVt

Yes, King Julian! The Penguins were pretty funny too!

  • elzupasmonkey

Yosemite Sam and Daffy Duck. We laugh because they encapsulate who we are as opposed to Bugs Bunny who is who we would like to be.

    • lettergirl

daffy is my ALL TIME fave with sylvester running a clost second.

    • pastafarian

      Yes, daffy duck.

  • Mr. Holloway

Gotta go with Robin Williams’ Genie.

I know today his schtick seems played out today, but when “Aladdin” came out, I was laughing my a$$ off…even as the jokes sailed over my little kid head.

    • C

yea i second that dude. gotta LOVE the genie! Robin Williams is fantastic!

    • Zach

      Nobody tops Robin!

    • AT

His absence is why the second Aladdin movie is the worst of the three.

  • JJ

I liked the squirrel Steve Carell played in “Over the Hedge.”

    • Cheri

      Yes! Loved that character!

Also? Chowder from Monster House. That movie is seriously underrated. As an adult, I’ve seen it so many times that I have most of it memorized.

      • Liz

Love that movie! Chowder is hilarious!

    • Carla

That was hysterical! Steve Carrell is a genius.

  • SXiPPY

Fritz the Cat, he’s sarcastic and perverted; what’s not to love?

  • Silverskreen

    Rory!…Cory!..Dory! Yes, Dory, FTW!

  • Lemon

Mushu from Mulan, Genie from Aladdin, Edma Mode The Incredibles, and Dory from Finding Nemo.

    • Carrie #2

Ahhhh, you just hit the nail on the head. Perfect choices! :)

      • Squee

I thought the sea turtle from Nemo was better than Dory.

    • C

very nice Lemon… very good choices! =)

    • caroline

      MUSHU

    • Mocha

Ha, I love Mushu! “Dishonor! Dishonor on your whole family! (Make a note of this.) Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow…”

  • Rick

In my book, “The Emperor’s New Groove” is the most underrated… and funniest… of the Disney animated features. The voice casting is pitch perfect with Kuzco (David Spade), Yzma (Eartha Kitt), Kronk (Patrick Warburton)and Pacha (John Goodman) making a great comedy ensemble.

    • Sarah

      Absolutely!
It’s the only Disney flick with a Warner Bros. vibe and the voice work it outstanding.

    • jam

Absolutely the best. Loved Wendy Malik in it too.

    • steph

Definitely the funniest animated feature I’ve ever seen. (“That’s me as a baby!”) It actually made me like David Spade. I quote this movie all the time but unfortunately I only know 1 person who’s seen it.

    • Erin

I’m SO glad someone said this!! Best/funniest movie ever, Kronk and Kuzko were off the charts funny. I’m 26 now and can still watch it and crack up.

    • Kelmar

I agree – this movie is hilarious, and Kronk totally stole the show!

    • ashlie

      Llama face!

    • Di

The first time I saw this movie was in college with five friends. After it was over we all got up, got some water, and sat down and watched it again. I LOVE this movie.

    • Leslie

Thank you all for representing! I saw this film when it first came out & now have all of my friends quoting it!!!
“I’ve been turned into a cow, may I go home”
      “You’re excused. Anyone else?”
      “No, we’re good.”

    • Tiffany

My fave by far! Love Kronk!

    • Ra

I was just going to say the same thing! It is undoubtedly my favorite Disney animated movie.

    • Katja

LOL Kronk is amazing. “I should tell you now I’m kind of hard to fit. I wear a 66 long and a 31 waist.”

    • Jenny

Yes, defiantly Emperor’s New Groove! I can’t just name one character because they’re all so perfect and funny. If I have to pick one: Kronk is the best :)

    • atomisk

I agree, Patrick Warburton’s Kronk gets my vote for funnest animated character.

      • atomisk

What I meant to say was funniest. This is what you get for trying to type with three kids worth of distractions.

    • lars

“Is that my voice? Is that MY voice?!?”

    • Meredith

Yay! Incredibly quotable and amazing…”Llama face!”

    • Marisa

Kronk FTW. Especially the scene in the restaurant where he gets roped into being the chef and takes it just a little too seriously.

“I’m going to have to charge you extra for the salad.”

    • LizO

Emperor’s New Groove – best ever. So hard to pick a favorite, but I have to go with Kronk.
      “To the secret lab!!”

      • Paula

        “wrong Lever”

    • Amanda

Emperor’s New Groove is the funniest movie ever. It’s like, you laugh in every scene. But I think Mushu, Donkey and Dori are awesome. Also love me some Sid, the sloth in the first Ice Age movie.

    • anon.

i was waiting for someone to mention Kronk. by far, my favorite Disney sidekick.

    • Carla

I CANNOT believe I forgot the Emperor’s New Groove! HIGHLY underrated, and the first thing in years to make me laugh out loud! BOOM, BABY!

    • Ethan’s Mom

“Why do we even have that lever?!”

    • kate

      LLAMA FACCCCEE!

      • LizO

        My spinach puffs!

    • Danielle

I so agree. I love that movie. Yay I’m a llama again….. wait.

  • elly

Well, I’ve never seen the Madagascar *films*…but those penguins on their own TV show make me snort on a regular basis. I love Skipper’s exclamations (i.e. “Sweet Ghandi’s nunchuks!”).

I gotta cast my pure film vote for Harry Connick Jr.’s Dean in The Iron Giant. As someone who spent my formative college years smack in the middle of those hippie artistes, I have to say Dean is the ultimate representation. I’m not sure how funny he’s supposed to be…but I think he’s outrageously funny. :)

  • Jenn

Might not be the best, but I love Dug from Up!

    • Mr. Holloway

I have just met you. And I love you.

      • Sue1

        Great line :)

    • Ari

“I was hiding under the porch because I love you!”

      • Cheri

I lost it at that part. Started bawling at the drive-in….not for the first time…

      • jordan

        “Squirl!”

    • Dusty

      Squirrel!

    • Mole

      “Point!”

    • Carla

SQUIRREL!!!!!!!! I hid under your porch because I love you!

    • JKH

I love when Dug tells the joke about the squirrel dying (don’t remember it exactly, but I think the squirrel didn’t store enough nuts for winter?). “And it is funny because the squirrel is dead.”
