'Cougar Town' does 'Spaced'-inspired finger gun shootout: Watch!

If you’re still laughing at Cougar Town‘s episode-ending finger gunfight (and Ellie resurrecting herself from the dead to drink some wine), odds are you will wet yourself when you watch the scenes from Spaced, the British series starring Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes, and Nick Frost, to which it’s paying homage. (You can hear Cougar Town‘s Travis say “I love Spaced” as he falls, but it’s co-creators Kevin Biegel and Bill Lawrence you need to thank: In a joint statement to EW, they admit, “We are both self-proclaimed TV nerds and Spaced is such an awesome show that we wanted to give it a ‘shout-out.’ Plus, it was easier than writing our own joke.”) Watch the Cougar Town and Spaced scenes below. Cougar Town isn’t the first show to whip out the finger guns on American TV — The Office and Psych come to mind — but it was a nice surprise. After Jules’ therapist (Jennifer Aniston) cured her of the nervous tick, we feared they were gone for good. Instead, everyone’s packin’, and the fire is no longer friendly. UPDATE: Pegg has tweeted his approval: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. That was always our motto.”

And on an unrelated note, just because I found the length of the clip showing Bobby finally mastering the neti pot on last night’s Cougar Town almost as wonderfully uncomfortable as watching Jimmy and Timmy’s extended battle sequence in the South Park episode “Cripple Fight”…

A Spaced shout-out? Almost makes me want to watch Cougar Town.

    • Liz

Do IT! You won’t be sorry. Cougar Town is fabulous, one of my favorite comedies.

      • jk

Me too! And NO ONE will listen to me when I tell them to watch it. I swear to God, it really is the name. Although when I told one of my friends about the title cards (“Titles are Hard,” “Cougar Town – Not What the Show Is About”), I think she considered giving it a chance.

      • graeme

Yeah, when people see I have the first season on DVD, they say “really?!?”. I have to justify how awesome the show is.

      • melissa

I liked the one that said “Badly Titled”.

  • Josie

I couldn’t remember why it rang a bell, but of course it was from Spaced. I laughed so hard during that scene. Cougar Town is really outdoing itself lately.

    • DDB

So agreed! This season has had some great episodes so far! I actually find “Cougar Town” funnier than “Modern Family” lately!

      • HD

Per laugh I do believe Cougar Town is the funnier show.

      • Lena120

ITA. I started to like Cougar Town more than Modern Family towards the end of last season. They really have some good writers over there. I thought it was robbery that none of them received any Emmy love this year.

      • Kisha

I thought the title card that read “Modern” Cougar Town was pretty funny.

  • taylor

That’s just not funny on any show. Wildly mildly amusing…maybe…if your 12.

    • Eric P

Maybe you should take the stick out of your @$$. That would be funny.

      • m

        lol. agreed.

  • elena

Spaced = most underrated comedy ever. This is why Simon Pegg can do no wrong.

    • Katja

Oh my god…I’ve never seen Spaced and don’t think I’ve ever really even heard about it before, but wow. That was hysterical. The dramatic gunfight music was killing me, and was that a Jurassic Park reference at the end of the second Spaced clip? I have *got* to watch more of this show.

      • Emily

You can watch the entire series for free on Hulu! It is fantastic; you will get totally hooked. :o )

      • tvchick

As long as you live in the US as not even these clips are visible to us lowly Canadians…GRRR ARRRGGHHH….

      • Shotgun Shogun

“Clever Girl” is most certainly a reference to Jurassic Park.

  • tvgirl48

Modern Family is still hilarious and enjoyable, but Cougar Town is hilarious and entertaining in a completely different way. Between the Spaced shoutout and the whole Usual Suspects homage this episode, Cougar Town really is getting better every week.

    • Haruhi85

Agreed tvgirl48. The homages were awesome.

  • tracy bluth

This week’s episode of Cougar Town may have honestly been my favorite yet.

  • Beverly

Cougar Town is Friends in disguise. I always believed that Courtney Cox and Matthew Perry were the under rated stars of that show.

    • Liz

I don’t see many similarities between Cougar Town and Friends. I mean other than it’s about a group of friends. I feel like Cougar Town is all heart and friends was all fun.

    • Terry

You are correct at least two of the episodes were exactly the same as a Friends episode, the one with who gets Stan- was just like a Thanksgiving episode with Christina Applegate and the one this week about the presents was a lot like the one with Rachel’s 30th birthday!

    • JLC

I think it is kind of like Friends, viewed through the bizarro lens of Scrubs. But it’s really its own thing. One of the funniest shows on TV, bar none.

    • Vince from NYC

When you have a show as popular as friends that lasted as long as it did, it’s only a matter of time before other shows touch on similar subjects. I think Cougar town is solid. Cox isn’t even teh best character on the show.. The whole cast is funny.

Yes, for a fact, # 1, 15 years ago my grandma, aunt, Case Walker, Ryan Walker and I where wlnaikg on our hill and we watched one for 15-20 minutes seting on the side of a hill when it stood up streched out and walk away. # 2 1995 My best friend TC and I where out driving looking around when a young one ran across road in front of us. #3 found doe kill, cat sign all over, was a big doe covered up with large brush. No Bobcat did this. #4 found track and had a man that goes to CO, NM, and AZ hunting them all the time. He said it was for sure a Mountain lion track. #5 My neighbor and i where in the hay field when on came out and then ran back in to the brush. That neighbor said he had seen one 11 times. Have had many friends, neighbors and hunters say they have seen one with in a mile of our farm. One hunter said it came out and played in the field like a little citten. All the ones I have seen have all had long tails with a black tip. And all of them where huge except for the baby and it was about the size of a large bobcat but had a 4 foot or so long tail. We live in the Cedar Vale Ks area.

This was a very funny episode. I also loved the references to The Usual Suspects–brilliant.

  • JBin Colorado

Cougar Town is one of the funniest shows anywhere. I have never thought Modern Family was funny – and quit watching after the second episode, but Cougar Town just blows me away every week. Funny and smart.

  • J

This show deserves all the attention Modern Family gets. Cougar Town is way better!

    • Just Me

I agree. EW should do a Cougar Town cover for the magazine. I hate how the recappers say this show is so good but the website nor magazine ever feature it. Maybe if they were a cover story people will realize that they changed the premise of the show and it is NOT about lady cougars (except Barb) and finally watch it.

MAKE CT A COVER STORY EW!!!!

      • Ninja

I totally agree with you, Just Me! EW should definitely do a Cougar Town cover. I am starting the campaign right here. EW DO IT!

  • Mercedes

Yeah, yeah, finger gunfights, all good and that, but Oh. My. God. Mark Heap was in Spaced! I love him!

  • Frost

Of course, that uncomfortable cripple fight scene was itself inspired by They Live, which is a great movie.

  • stylelike16th

I have always been a fan of Bill Lawrence and to see that last night made my insides explode with glee!!! The Cast of Spaced is one of the best British shows of all time. The paintball scene is amazing to if you haven’t seen the series…. RENT IT!!!!! Or just buy it, trust me it’s worth it’s cost…. oh and my other favorite part last night: “Look at my rings, my rings, my rings…” CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!!

  • anthea

I love cougar town. Can’t wait for the second season to start here in the UK. Sadly I’m not able to view the clip your referring too :( . It’s block to countries outside the Usa currently. Enjoy spaced for all those newly introduced.

  • Dustin

    AWWWW. I missed Collin.
