Not so fast on that 'Thriller' movie, says director Kenny Ortega

Michael-Jackson-ThrillerWere you moonwalking with anticipation after we told you about the reports of a new movie based on the classic Michael Jackson song “Thriller”?  Well, you might need to glide back a couple of steps. At last night’s 35th anniversary tribute to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Kenny Ortega — reportedly attached to direct the “Thriller”-inspired movie — told EW not to break out the red leather jacket just yet. “It got put out there before I’ve even really had a chance to think about it too much,” he said at the event, a benefit for the Painted Turtle, a California camp for kids with serious illnesses. “It is still in very, very early stages of development. The [Michael Jackson] estate would have to sign off on it. I have been a part of some early creative meetings and if all goes well, I think it could happen in the next couple of years.” When asked if he was nervous about re-creating the magic of John Landis’ beloved 1983 video, Ortega said, “Michael used to say to me that there is nothing to be afraid of and fear just gets in the way anyway. We were very good friends. I miss him. And I would never do anything to ruin his memory or one of his creations. But like I said, it is so early, so who knows what will materialize?”

Kenny Ortega directed the Bette Midler movie HOCUS POCUS! A Halloween tradition in my household :)

Hocus Pocus freaked me out and gave me intense nightmares first time I saw it in fourth grade. Refuse to watch it. Scariest movie ever, in my opinion.

NEWS FLASH! Michael Jackson is dead! How are they going to make a “Thriller” film without the dead star? Are they going to use CGI? Or just move his dead body around with strings while someone else does a voice-over. Whatever the case, it seems really rude and disrespectful and I do not want to watch a dead body for two hours. Shame on you!

When do we get the Like A Virgin and the She-Bop films?

  • patman

IF there is a film made, which I hope there isn’t, the director should be the same one that did the video: John Landis.

i agree with you if one had too be made

I personally think this is a stupid idea.

Hollywood is running out of ideas for movies. Have you seen all the reruns of old shows and remakes of movies? Seriously? In a while, we will run out of superhero movies to make. What will we do then?

I think its stupid to remake a music video into a movie. All its going to be is a zombie movie. How is it any different than any other zombie flick, except it has the name “Thriller”.

I feel like my generation will be the generation of Michael Jackson tributes. And honestly, I didn’t like the guy when he was alive.

Although I am an MJ fan, I agree. The zombie theme was unique in the context of a music video, but in the form of a movie? Not so much. This is just another way to make a quick cash grab off of a dead man’s head. By pimping him out so much, they are ensuring that he becomes overrated, and turns into another cliche. How are we going to convince future generations that MJ was a great artist when all they will know him as is a merchandise product? And Kenny Ortega isn’t exactly a Scorsese-type of director; look at High School Musical for instance.

… ermmmm “so who knows WHAT might materialize” ???????? Did I hear that right?? A little play on words there, Shamone now, Kenny….stop playing cat and mouse.

So let me get this straight . E is admitting that they jumped the gun and reported erroneously .. ? And then printed a correction. Perhaps other news groups should take notice. MJ has been characterized erroneously his old adult life. MJJJusticeProject applauds E for having the integrity to admit they were too quick in their reporting without ALL the facts..
