'Glee' Rocky Horror ep: Who sang the opening song? We have your answer.

Santana-Naya-RiveraImage Credit: Michael Yarish/FoxPerhaps the most-debated part of Glee‘s Rocky Horror-themed episode last night was the opening number: the unidentified pair of lips singing “Science Fiction.” We’ve done some investigating and can now tell you for certain that those perfect red lips belong to none other than Santana. Not Quinn (as I suspected). Not Tina (as others suspected). Fox has just confirmed the news to us. You’re welcome.

Was this really something people were wondering about? To me it not only sounded like Santana but looked like her as well. Those sharp canines! :)

    • D

I knew it was her from the beginning.

      • laura

        YEAP .. me too

      • filmboymichael

I don’t understand why this is really newsworthy….the soundtrack indicates that it is santana singing the opening number….

      • Sarah C

        Saaaaame here.

      • mrgrissett

        Yep, so did I

      • Elysia

      • jenna

i knew it was her before music started to play. I kno those lips anywhere!!

    • Sadie

    • Scytherius

I thought it was Quinn. *shrug*

      • katie

        Do did i!

      • Dolphin

        Me, three.

      • Sara

        Yeah, I did too.

      • rhod

        me too.

      • doro626

I also thought it was Quinn. Santana doesn’t usually sound so tamed. her voice sounds smokier to me.

    • Carly

I agree. I knew it was Santana from the get go, and can’t believe others did catch on to that right away

    • graeme

Don’t know why people thought this was Quinn. Argon doesn’t have the pipes that Rivera does. Hopefully they give Rivera a proper solo soon.

      • Dolphin

That opening song didn’t require pipes.

      • Anna

I think Dianna Agron has a really good voice. Maybe that’s just me?

      • oh stop with the Quinn bashing

I think Dianna Agron is not only a great actress, but a really lovely, lovely singer. I want to hear a lot more of her pipes!

    • Kit

It sounded JUST like Quinn to me. I was rather surprised to read that it was Santana.

      • Kal

I agree…I thought it sounded like Quinn.

      • sinicalgrl

me as well – could they have used Santana’s mouth but Quinn’s voice?

      • Dolphin

I thought it sounded like Quinn, too. And I don’t usually look at their mouths … except to know for certain it wasn’t Rachael (she always shows her mouth) or Brittany (who recently showed her teeth in the dental chair). And the song was probably too tame for Amber.

      • laylagalise

Agreed, the voice didn’t sound as powerful as Santana’s. Quinn has the weakest female voice (aside from Brittney maybe) in the Glee club, so I assumed it was hers.

    • Bonnie

Go to the comments section from the recap – it was seriously hotly debated. Some people wouldn’t even give it up after people who have the CD listed the credits. It’s not “newsworthy” but it sure was a hot topic.

    • Ben

You could tell from her voice. We need a new re-capper who isn’t a 12 year old girl. This episode was horrible

      • Anna

    • bruno

      totally. derr.

    • wg

Of course it was Naya – was there any question?

    • Jordan

I thought it was Tina or Quinn- Santana was the last person I thought it would be!

  • DCbuilder

I’ll buy that it was Santana’s lips, but I’m not convinced that it wasn’t Quinn’s voice.

    • K

EW just said that they confirmed it was Santana singing the opening. What more do you want? A signed letter from the actress herself?

      • Abe Froman

They confirmed it was Santana’s LIPS. I’m convinced she’s lipsyncing to Quinn’s voice.

      • SC

Er, no. It’s Santana; she’s the only one credited as singing on the CD, and the music producer tweeted that it was her.

      • Xena Warrior Princess

Abe Froman, sausagee king of Chicago!

      • I’m not Xena I’m Lucy Lawless

Ferris is sick. My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.

  • Jill

I was wondering! I thought it was Quinn as well.

  • Tee

I thought it was Quinn as well, now I’ll have to go listen to it again.

  • AN

    Thought it was Quinn, too!

  • maxwell19596

I thought it was the perfect opening to the show, and of course performed quite well. All in all, this was a really great Glee showing, and a nice Halloween treat!

  • Carrie #2

Grr, I was positive it was Quinn!

  • nodnarb

I think a much bigger point of contention is why a woman was playing Frank-n-Furter. Did Fox have anything to say about that?

    • BP

The show addressed this in the plot: Mike’s parents wouldn’t let him be in the show due to the content, Stamos couldn’t because it would be “inappropriate”, then they were out of guys. Mercedes volunteered to do it. In reality, this is probably how it would have happened…

      • AQS

John Stamos was supposed to play Frank N. Furter originally (his recording of “Sweet Transvestite” is floating around the internet…), but Fox vetoed the idea. While Amber 100% KILLED the tune (she sounded, and looked, beyond amazing), it still wasn’t right at all. Hmpf.

      • LAJackie

But it wouldn’t be inappropriate for Will to have Rachel rub herself all over him and sing toucha-toucha-toucha touch me.

    • Jen

A lot of RHPS companies (the ones that act out the movie during the showing) use women as Frank-N-Furter. They seem to think it adds to the whole fantastic, awesome, campy gender-bending mess. I don’t care for it myself, but it’s not entirely unheard of.

  • Clara

There was a lot of gender censorship that went on in this episode. “Sensational Transylvania”? Really?

    • juju

Sin-sational. But she did sing “transvestite,” so I didn’t get why they took out “transsexual.”

And yes, they did explain it. Mike Chan was supposed to play it, but his parents made him drop out, so they were going to have to dump the show, but Mercedes stepped forward and said she wanted to play Frank-n-furter.

      • rachel

i think the question being asked wasn’t what in the storyline determined Mercedes playing the role but rather what behind the scenes politics in the creation of the episode led them to not go with with having a man play the role. to me the story line explanation felt like a cop out or maybe it really was too many females in the glee club.

  • The Jackal

OMG, give it a rest EW. There have been about 8 articles on this episode since it aired. There are other shows on TV, not everyone watches Glee.

    • D

Give yourself a rest and stop commenting already.

    • The Jackal

Why, do I hurt your feelings? It’s called feedback. Learn the concept.

    • Jeff

Hey Jackal – for someone who keeps complaining about EW writing so many articles about Glee – you sure seem eager to read and comment about them…I’ve seen your posts on other Glee stories.

      • The Jackal

Yeah, it’s called negative comments. Not all feedback is positive and I don’t read the articles to comment. I’m not commenting on the content of the article just the number of articles they are writing. Not a hard concept to grasp but I guess it is for you

      • Anna

If you don’t like Glee, then don’t read Glee articles and leave obnoxious comments. Simple as that. Leave the Gleeks alone. We’re too cool for you.

    • tracy bluth

I never thought I’d say this, but I agree with The Jackal.

    • Jenn

For what it’s worth, I am a huge Glee fan and LOVED the show last night. However, I do agree that EW’s hard on for Glee is a bit much at times. I also read articles for shows I don’t watch regularly just to see what’s going on and if maybe I want to tune in. I don’t comment on them most of the time, but everyone is entiteld to an opinion regardless of whether they watch a show or not, love a show or not, or just have something to say. I personally love all things Glee so if EW wants to cater to someone like me, I’m fine with it. I can, however, completely get why others would not be so understanding. There needs to be a balance.

    • Jen

Me too, hate to say it. The site has just been flooded with Glee and Taylor Swift this week. I like both, but it’s just too much.

    • Lisa Simpson

Oddly enough, I agree with The Jackal too. What next? Who catered the episode?

      • The Jackal

What’s funny about it, right after I wrote my initial comment, I went back to the hompepage and there was another article on Glee.

      • Lisa Simpson

And now there’s another. I think that one is the all-important who designed the costumes update.

      • wasabi

Where’s the update on what brand and shade of lipstick were used on Santana’s lips for the opening?

    • halpert

I’m with The Jackal on this one.

  • Anonymous

I thought they were Amber Riley’s lips since they looked like a black person’s lips.

Honestly didnt mean to sound like a racist (the thought did give me pause for a second before I posted). But it’s just a fact that some people have different characteristics. I thought those lips looked like a black persons, and it isn’t racist to say so. I’m not deriding or offending anyone in any way.

  • tracy bluth

I thought it was obvious it was Naya. Her voice is a 1000x better than Dianna’s.

    • Will

Yes, of course. Dianna it’s maybe the most popular Glee girl and one of the most onscreen time and she doesn’t have the best acting or vocal skills (actually, in that subject, she is the weakest) and her character is not going into the comedy way (like Heather Morris’ Brittany). I think maybe this is one of those things that makes people to hate Glee the more and Gleeks to love it more. I wouldn’t like to say this, but Gleeks are really shallow. There is not other explanation to the fact that they dislike Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz’s character) but they love Quinn, when actually both girls don’t do anything different for their interpretations. Plus, Jenna’s plot is smaller as her onscreen time, most of all of Dianna Agron. And now that Chord Overstreet is in the show, I’m afraid that Amber Reily or Kevin McHale do not return for next season (in fact, Dijon Talton did not return for that guy).

    • oh stop with the Quinn bashing

      Naya’s voice is very nice.
But I would rather her Dianna’s voice any day.

  • Mole

Really says something about the amount of audio processing the show uses (needed or not) that we’re unable to discern one of three usually distinct voices.

    • Xena Warrior Princess

      ^ this

  • Brandy

I knew it! Everyone I was with disagreed with me. I love her voice.

  • Jenn

My son asked me at the very beginning whose voice and lips they were. I flat out knew it was Santana on both accounts. Dianna/Quinn doesn’t completely finish all her sounds (lots of UH’s and AH’s instead of R’s and A’s) and has a bit more of a nasally voice.
