'The City' canceled? Whitney Port tells Ryan Seacrest it's over

whitney-port-the-cityImage Credit: Jim Wright/MTVJoin me in a champagne toast to the end of MTV’s Fabulous Life era. After this summer’s (surprisingly self-aware) series finale of The Hills, it looks like its tamer, slightly more tasteful East Coast little sister, The City, is no more — or so says star Whitney Port. After rumors of cancellation earlier this year, reality star-turned-fashion designer Port called into Ryan Seacrest‘s radio show this morning with an update. “As of right now it doesn’t really look like we’re doing it anymore,” Port told Seacrest. “But it’s okay, one door closes and another opens,” she said cheerily. According to Port, The City will not pull a Project Runway and move to another network. Instead, she plans to keep busy by “working on some other things.”

MTV has yet to return EW’s request for comment. It seems likely, however, that the cancellation is true, what with the network’s recent move taking strides towards — and receiving accolades for — more “realistic” reality programming (like 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom). While I’ll miss my guilty pleasure glimpse into the fashion world, the cancellation of The City will put a stop to Olivia Palermo’s impending attempts world domination, one large barrel curling iron at a time.

Will you miss The City, PopWatchers? What should Whitney Port do next?

The first season of The City sucked. But it hit it’s stride last season. I actually liked it a lot more than The Hills. But I’m not heartbroken, or anything. I probably wouldn’t have ever noticed if it weren’t for this.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they did cancel it considering Lauren Conrad has a new show coming out about her life as a designer. Very similiar to the City and rather than have the competition and detract the ratings from Lauren’s show, they probably decided to cancel the somewhat low-rated City. Pity b/c the City was actually getting good!

What a disappointment. I really enjoyed The City. It provided such an interesting perspective into the world of fashion. Particularly loved the insight to People’s Revolution and how the industry works.

I never held out much hope that the City would continue after the Hills was gone, and while I liked it a lot better, admittedly the Olivia-Erin bitchfight was getting repetitive. (Erin, Joe Zee loves Olivia, so just stop trying to get rid of her. Also then there’d be no show.) Though the whole “show ponies and work horses” metaphor was words to live by.

I’ve never watched this show, but this is what that Olivia Paleramo (sp?) girl was on, right? Every time I open a fashion magazine there are pictures of her everywhere.

If you’re not going to read the article then don’t comment, tracy you ignorant piece of sh**.

Oh…whoops. I skimmed it and missed that part. Lesson learned, “@tracy”.

Good, I’m glad it’s cancelled. Shows like this, and the Hills are unwatchable these days when so many Americans are suffering in this recession. I hope the Kardashians is next.

The City could just pair up with LC’s new show, right? Please don’t be cancelled!!! The City was so good b/c it showed the fashion world without (most of) the drama from the Hills. Come back, Whitney!

  • Marcus

I will definitely miss the show. But you can bet I’ll find something better to do with my time. I got over The Hills, I can get over The City.

  • Melinda

I’ll miss Whitney but I won’t miss the show, and I really won’t miss Olivia! Can’t stand her!

  • Jerry

First The Hills, now The City? There is a god! please get rid of the kardashians next, followed by Kate Gosselin and then Kendra. But don’t stop there. Get rid of Tori Spelling, Guilliana and Bill, Jersey Shore, and all the other so-called reality shows.

I will truly miss The City, it was a fantastic way to show a different perspective of the fashion industry for all of us fashion lovers! I am also going to miss watching the fantastic outfits that Olivia always rocked to Elle and even in the streets of the meat packing district. Olivia was absolutely my favorite character from the show despite her personality, which is totally false since I met her and she was down to earth and willing to speak to me. Overall, I am very upset and disappointed that this show is cancelled because last season ended in a cliff hanger and I was looking forward to the new season.

  • Tamarah

I actually loved this show! I’m disappointed that it left me hanging wondering if Olivia was going to come back from japan. She was definietely my favorite character despite her personality.

  • Budget_Chic

I will also miss the show enjoy the fashion aspect of it. It was entertaining, I knew it was pseudo-reality and that was fine. I don’t know what MTV’s hang-up is with doing straight reality all the time, the format is so old and tired. Time to go back to fresh and interesting scripted shows.

I am not overly sad it was canceled. It was getting stupid anyway!!
