EW Reunions: 'Scream 4' cast talks about the latest installment

Courteney-Cox-ArquetteImage Credit: JAMES DIMMOCK FOR EWThe stars of Scream — David Arquette, Courteney Cox, and Neve Campbell — had a good reason to get back together for EW’s Reunions photo shoot on July 20: They were already together in Ann Arbor, Mich., filming the highly anticipated fourth film in the hit slasher franchise. Scream 4, due in theaters April 15, finds sheriff Dewey (Arquette), former tabloid newshound Gale (Cox), and newly published author Sidney (Campbell) once again targeted by the knife-wielding Ghostface. “For years now, it’s always been ‘When are you guys gonna do another one?’ ” says Campbell, 37. “And I’d say, ‘No, no.’ And here we are!”

So what can Scream fans expect from this latest installment of the horror phenomenon? Well, first of all, Sidney has written a self-help book. “She ends the book tour with going to Woodsboro and there she finds her cousin and her aunt and some friends and trouble ensues,” says Campbell. (It’s Kind of a Funny Story‘s Emma Roberts plays Sid’s cousin, Jill, and Battlestar Galactica‘s Mary McDonnell plays Sid’s aunt, Kate).

Meanwhile, Gale and Dewey have settled into a life of domestic bliss in Woodsboro, which is driving Gale nuts. (At the time of EW’s interview, the real-life couple, Cox and Arquette, were pre-separation, still enjoying domestic bliss themselves.) “We’ve been married for 10 years,” says Cox. “I kinda gave up my job as the entertainment journalist. I’ve written six books, but now I have major writer’s block. I’m bored with my life and bored with my marriage and bored with the silly small town of Woodsboro.” Sidney’s return helps get Gale’s investigative juices flowing again. Says Cox, “It’s actually the anniversary of the first killing in Woodsboro. When she arrives to promote her book, things start happening, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Scream fans are well-versed in the rules of survival, as established by Randy (Jamie Kennedy) in the first three films. Well, expect similar rules for Scream 4. “I think it has echoes to the first [film],” says director Wes Craven. “There’s been a whole decade of horror films that in one way or another followed a certain pattern. Like you had torture porn, [and] a ton of remakes. The first [Scream] was very much observing where horror had been for the last 10 to 20 years. And this is very much looking at where horror has been for the last 10 years. There’s always somebody trying to figure out what the rules are to keep from getting killed.”

The Scream movies made Neve rich, so she only works if she wants to.

    • Mellissa

Actually, Party of Five made Neve Campbell “big.” Scream made her “bigger.”

    • Pete

Neve Campbell hasn’t done a mainstream film in over 10 years. Her last mainstream film was Scream 3. She and David Arquette have mostly been doing independent straight to dvd releases. It will be strange seeing them back, if they are still the leads in the film it will be difficult for them to carry it on their shoulders.

I know for a fact that courtney cox won’t have much involvment in the film. She could barely make it to Michigan to film her part because of Cougar town, so don’t expect her to have much screen time (hint).

        i know right

  • Amy

Lol. I’m pretty sure that if this interview took place right before they announced their separation, then Cox and Arquette were not, in fact, “still enjoying domestic bliss themselves.” Just an observation. ;)

    • Zach

Yeah, they’ve privately been separated for four months now. I recognize her quote as something previously published in the magazine, but 4 months ago? Doubtful.

    • jp

There is a little disclaimer in there in parenthesis. Read it again.

      • Zach

It’s still unclear when they did this interview.

      • Jim

Scream 4 just wrapped filming in the past month, so EW probably made the mistake here.

      • Amy

Sorry for being unclear. I was more just laughing at the description of wedded bliss being applied to the the weeks/months/years of turmoil a couple often goes through before making the very difficult decision to separate; not so much about whether or not they were legally separated at the time of the interview. Marriages can sometimes take a while to deteriorate, and I doubt few who have experienced it would use “bliss” to define that period of time. Ok, sorry, this post is getting waaaay to serious. I apologize.

      • TCC

the interview was taken in july

  • Justin

This is going to be AWESOME! April 15 is circled on my calender

  • Sefket

How can I purchase this magazine with Scream 4 in it?

  • Line

I LOVE the scream movies…and I am looking forward to this one!!

  • SXiPPY

I was obsessed with Scream, still am! I saw the first one 20x in theaters (I snuck in underage and I am proud of it). I can’t wait for this new one and although I am a little skeptical of the casting choices; I have faith that the presence of Neve, Courtney & David will keep it good. Plus, I really want to see Hayden Pennetiere die a treachorous death.

    • Erin

Hah me too Sxippy. Lets hope it’s good – die Hayden!

      • joey

        hell yea!!

      • joey

  • SXiPPY

Oh, and thankfully Courtney’s got a decent hair style unlike “Scream 3″, because that wig or whatever it was…just not cool!

    • Will

yeah what was up with that? Not only the hair but I seem to remember red leather pants, and a weirdly dark tan.

      • HD

Courtney looked a mess in Scream 3 but was probably going through something we weren’t aware of. It’s just a shame that look got captured on film for eternity because she’s such a beautiful woman.

      • Ben

The dark tan was because some of the scenes were shot immediately after her honeymoon. They mention it on the DVD commentary.

      • joey

yeaaa! very beautiful! as well as her bfffffffffl jennifer aniston! love them both on friends! nd i think wes craven shud have jennifer aniston guest star!

    • nyangel22

she had that hair on Friends the season the movie filmed, so i doubt it was a wig. just a really bad style choice.

  • Flip

Sooo excited for this movie! I just hope Sid and Gale don’t get killed or are the killer(s).

  • Abby

If Gale Weathers dies, I’m walkin’ out (…not really, but I’ll be pissed as heck; love her!)

    • lindsey h.

I’m sooooooo excited for this movie! I’ve loved all the scream movies & have seen them all at least 20x’s! I can’t wait for this one to come out :)

    • Flip

I think there’s a good chance Dewey will die simply because he’s the “least valuable” of the three originals.

    • Clint

Right there with u fails the best

    • Screamer

There’s been specualtion that Gail will die due to a released photo by Craven. I REALLY hope she doesn’t though. :/

      • Screamer

Sorry. *Gale* I MUST get the names right.

      • SilentRage

I remember thinking she was gonna die in scream 2 after photos of her hiding from ghostface were released… if she does die though I doubt it’ll be in that scene

    • just me

um, i heard that gale dies fairly quickly in the film. so dont waste your money.

  • Dustin

Dude I can’t wait! April seems so far away!

  • Sean S.

I’m excited and nervous. Love the Scream films a lot and hope this one lives up to the originals in creativity. If it’s as smart, funny and intense as the previous films, I’ll be thrilled.

  • Cedric cambridge

Im really looking foward 2 seeing this movie.

  • Al

    I can’t wait!

  • Guil

I’m hoping that number 4 has the quality of the first one.

  • dee123

I really can’t wait! It’s taking me back to seeing the first two movies in high school, i guess this is what nostalgia feels like.
