This week's cover: The Reunions Issue

1124-1125
It’s the ultimate pop culture get together as Entertainment Weekly gathers 12 of your favorite TV and movie casts for our first-ever Reunions issue. A sampling:

Back to the Future’s Michael J. Fox and Lea Thompson pose with an exact replica of the time-traveling DeLorean, which was lovingly created by a superfan and driven from Toronto to New York specifically for EW’s photo shoot. “It’s great being with the car,” says Fox, who recalls “hitting my knee on the flux capacitor” during filming. “It’s a thrill for me because I didn’t actually get to shoot in the car,” adds Thompson with a laugh. “I’m a little bitter!” (For more with Fox and Thompson, check out the behind-the-scenes video below.)

EW traveled to London, Sydney, and Los Angeles to reunite the cast of The Lord of the Rings — Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan, Sean Astin, Bernard Hill, Sean Bean, Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto, Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellen –and director Peter Jackson, who recalls the disorienting feeling everyone had the last day of shooting: “There were a lot of tears,” he says. “It was just very weird and sad — the feeling that we were never going to come back and do it again.” Orlando Bloom reveals that Liv Tyler also convinced him to make a radical change to his look: “She goes, ‘Orly, you should have a mohawk. You’d look really cute.’… I was like, ‘I’ll have a mohawk, please!’”

Alias stars Jennifer Garner and Victor Garber discuss how their father-daughter relationship on TV developed into a finish-each-other’s-sentences friendship off-screen, and how Garner asked Garber to officiate at her 2005 wedding to Ben Affleck. “Immediately you had stage fright, ’cause we were gonna have a big wedding,” recalls Garner. “It ended up being only four people,” replies Garber, “which I was much more comfortable with.” (For more with Garner and Garber, check out our exclusive Alias video below.)

Allison Janney -- who joined her West Wing co-stars Martin Sheen, Stockard Channing, Bradley Whitford, Janel Moloney, Elisabeth Moss, Dule Hill, and Kathryn Joosten for EW's photo shoot -- says some of her fondest (and most frustrating) memories from the set on NBC's Emmy-winning White House drama involve the practical jokes perpetrated by co-star Joshua Malina. "He hid a fish in my trailer," she remembers. "He changed my [car's] navigation system to Spanish, and I couldn't figure out how to [fix] it... He was just ruthless."

For more with these casts and 8 other TV and movie reunions -- including Roots, Pretty in Pink, and Married... with Children -- pick up the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, on stands Friday, October 15.

I love the concept of this issue and eagerly look forward to reading it. But am I reading this right, another double issue?? Pretty soon ‘Entertainment Weekly’ is going to be a misnomer.

  • LOL

    Courtney and David lol awkward….

    • Buzz

photoshopped or before announcement…? since there is yet another scream sequel in the can they just did this could count simply as pr and not a genuine reunion

      • will

well apparently they’ve been separated since June and they only recently announced it, that means they shot most of Scream 4 while they were separated. extra awkward!

    • l.

      VERY awkward!

  • Republicans FOREVER

Lea Thompson is still so very do-able! I’d bend her over the flux capacitor and have at it seven ways from Sunday! BOO-YEAH! Vote Republican in two weeks and take back our country!!!

    • K

You give republicans a bad name. Not to mention being very vulger on a family friendly site. Shame on you.

    • LOL

      take your politics elsewhere

    • Josh

Aww, someone who thinks politicians care about them. Precious!

    • DT

Take back our country/ I didn’t really notice the armed troops occupying our streets or the statues of our ruler or the bread lines, etc. Get a grip. What did the Republicans do that was so great and worthwhile while they were in office in the first place? They got us involved in two wars and allowed our economy to go to crap while turning a blind eye to corporate malfeasance and ruinous banking practices. Yeah, Obama might not be getting a handle on the economy or Afghanistan, but he’s not responsible for either. Why hand the keys back over to the driver who put the car in the ditch in the first place.

      • Republicans FOREVER

The criminal One-Termer has devastated our troops, our Gulf Coast and our economy. All facts! We will win almost every single seat we’re going for next month. Another fact. When President-Elect Romney is in charge, his first action will be to imprison the One-Termer for his crimes. Yet another fact!

      • “…and stay on the subject – or we may delete your comment”

This political garbage is as annoying as the dating ads (and of course, completely irrelevant).

      • hc

You realize, of course, that just because you follow up a bunch of claims with “All facts!” they don’t magically convert to facts, right? I mean, there are mistakes he’s made, but Gulf Coast? If you had to pick an administration that created lax environmental policies on drilling would that be a Democratic one or a Republican one? I’m not saying he gets credit, but is the economy better or worse than when Obama took office? Pick better examples!

    • donknottz

Code for take the country back from the black man

      • Republicans FOREVER

        Precisely. He has already lost.

    • Person Who Talks

@Republicans Forever: As a republican, I must say, “Shut the f*ck up!” You’re hateful speech does nothing but give all us other republicans a bad name.

      • Republicans FOREVER

You know I speak only the truth. Deal with it. I say what you are too scared to say. THE TRUTH!!! We have already won 2012. The One-Termer will serve serious time for his crimes against America. Oh, in order to stay ‘on topic’… the DeLorean was a time machine.

    • AJ

Rubber room delusional wing nut with a “potty” mouth.

Probably screams about “family values,” too.

      Typical.

      Brain bleach needed.

    • jury’s out

Please, EW. Remember keep it clean, and stay on the subject?

  • EMB

OK, this has me more excited than any of the past five issues. LOVE IT!

    • Wiley

I don’t suscribe to the mag anymore, but I think I want to buy this issue! love Back to the Future and LOTR

  • marilinda

does the cast of will and grace really need to be reunited? that show just went off the air a few years ago. take it back a little more. how about the cast of the wonder years? or family matters? or hell, even blossom!

    • Karate Pants

Oh, I would SO love a Wonder Years reunion!

      • Kevin Arnold

Yes! Wonder Years would be the greatest reunion ever! I’m still waiting for the damn DVD/Blu Ray release.

    • Stacie

Blossom. Ha! Reminds me of the Blossom reference in Glee recently.

    • wizard62

You could say the same about Gilmore Girls, West Wing, and ALIAS. At least go back more than 10 years…

    • Mr. Holloway

Yeah, I really like the idea of a reunion issue, but the casts they selected seem completely and utterly random.

Might’ve been cool to have some sort of unifying theme or, instead of doing a double issue, having one issue be TV reunions, and having another issue be movie reunions.

      • Karate Pants

Yeah, like movies and TV shows from 1990, which would be in keeping with EW’s whole 20th anniversary thing.

      • Mr. Holloway

I was thinking about something EXACTLY along those lines!

A sampling of TV shows that debuted in 1990 (according to Wiki):

-Northern Exposure (which, to their credit, is included
        -Twin Peaks
        -Law & Order
        - Fresh Prince
        - In Living Color
        - Wings
        - Beverly Hills, 90210
        - Cop Rock (Ok, maybe leave this one off.)

Movies that came out in 1990:
        - Goodfellas
        - Home Alone
        - Edward Scissorhands
        - Ghost
        - Pretty Woman
        - Misery
        - Hunt for Red October, etc.

      • Karate Pants

They could even do the top shows of 1990 (even if they debuted earlier)…Cheers, Roseanne, The Cosby Show – ANY of those would make for a thoroughly enjoyable reunion!

  • Chris

Why didn’t they just focus on BTTF? But they have to release a BTTF issue in 2015.

  • cmg42

ahh they had a Gilmore Girls, West Wing, and ALIAS reunion photo shoots??? I think I might have to frame this issue!

    • Liz

This video of Jennifer Garner and Victor Garber just made me love Alias more! They are so cute.

  • Dusty

HAHAHAHA…Courtney taking the knife to David.

    • Christina

      Talk about an awkward picture!

    • Sarah

      Interesting timing!

      • Tyla

That picture alone is gonna sell the issue. Hahaha.

Seriously though, LOTR cast reunion? Yes please.

  • Kim

Can we have a “Lost” reunion? I’d like to see how the cast has changed over times.

    • ben

seriously? lost just ended. it would be too much to reunite them this early.

      • Kim

No. Not seriously. Besides there’s a mini-Lost reunion on Spike Scream awards next Tuesday!

      • LAJackie

I think she was being funny. At least my sense of humour tells me so.

  • Ashley

    The Muppets?!

I am all over this one!

  • typeg98

Why didn’t they get Christopher Lloyd and Thomas Wilson in on the BTTF reunion? Seems like they fell a little short on the main characters.

    • Karate Pants

It certainly appears that they’re missing…weird that they were able to get 13 people together from the LotR, but Biff was busy.

      • Mr. Holloway

I’m picturing them knocking on Tom F. Wilson’s door (“Hello! Anybody home?!”) and him not answering. Shame.

      • Karate Pants

LOL, I DO think that’s exactly how it went down.
I actually saw him at a comedy club a few years back, it wasn’t bad…but it wasn’t so great that he’s busier than Michael J. Fox and Lea Thompson!

  • Rini

REUNION OF THE FELLOWSHIP. BRB, HYPERVENTILATING.

    • Irish

But it sucks they didn’t post a video like they did with the others! Unless it’s just not working for me.

      • Wiley

no, it’s not your computer. There’s no vid =(

  • Beth

You had me at Victor Garber and Jennifer Garner! Kudos!

    • Kate

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Alias. The only thing that could have made it better would be David Anders and Michael Vartan! And whoever played Marshall!

      • racefan111

        Don’t forget Bradley Cooper…

      • Beth

Oh geez, and Bradley Cooper, Lena Olin, Greg Grunberg. AGH! I was so excited about Jennifer and Victor I didn’t think about everyone else. That would have been epic! I miss Alias.

      • Kate

Ahhh good point. I was just too excited about seeing Alias at all. There are so many awesome people from Alias I’d love to see.

  • pat

Too bad! I came to see somethin about the Lord of the Rings Reunion If this is all you got, I wont be getting the book!

    I miss Alias.

    • Megan

You are not alone. A little sad that they squashed my dreams of an Alias movie, though I guess Garber couldn’t be in it. I’m still holding out hope that Jennifer Garner guest-spots on Undercovers

      • JEREMY

With the troubling ratings “Undercovers” has been getting, they just might HAVE to bring J.Garner in to do a cameo.
