Image Credit: Jordan Strauss/WireImage.comIt was only a matter of time before the rumored American Idol season 10 judge contenders started sharing stories about being courted for the show. Bret Michaels recently told reporters that he made it to the list of top 5 contenders, which, given the laundry list of rumored judges we’ve been hearing about all summer, is quite an accomplishment.
The rocker told MTV, “I was disappointed. I’d love to have done it. I’m competitive, so it would have been great. On the other hand, to have J. Lo and Steve Tyler — one’s a pop icon and one’s a rock legend and both, along with Randy, are going to make such awesome TV … I can truly say I lost to a worthy opponent.”
In a way, I was rooting for Michaels to sit in Cowell’s vacated chair — after all, one of my favorite moments last season was the duet between Michaels and Casey James at the live finale. The rocker was going through a rough patch health-wise and still managed to command an audience that large (and yes, I was also a huge Casey James fan). That moment — and my familiarity with his diplomatic and victorious run on Celebrity Apprentice — convinced me he could be a popular choice for the Idol job. And, as we all know from the Rock of Love franchise, Michaels could handle a whole lot of crazy. More bikini girls, anyone? Sigh. At least I’ll still get my Bret Michaels television fix when his new reality show kicks off later this fall.
Who else might just wear a bandanna in solitude while watching Idol‘s season premiere in January?

Bret Michaels continues his campaign for ‘American Idol’ judge. I continue to be skeptical

Bret might have been the better fit because he’s more energetic and tells it straight.
a lot of people dont klnow this but brett invented the internet with al gore.
he also invented 80s hair bands.
he invented celebrity apprentice.
he invented having heart problems before your 55.
he invented the electric car.
he invented the microprocessor.
he invented the qwerty keyboard.
and MOST importantly he invented shamelss self promotion by a has been 80s hair band member
oh nuts i almost forgot. brett invented the hair club for men with donald trump and they are not only the owners they are clients.
pathetic try at humor.
Bret has made a lot of jokes about his extensions himself…..
Al Gore helped with the financial backing for internet research….look it up.
His health problems aren’t a joking matter – and given that he is a lifelong (diagnosed at age 5 or 6) juvenile diabetic – it TRULY isn’t funny….If you know anybody with that disease, they would probably be teaching you something about now….like your body parts start deteriorating as you age becaue of the effects of the disease….
Bret works out and eats right – and is REALLY in good shape for somebody who has this disease for all of these years.
So, as a hair band member – he should what? disappear to make you happy?
At LEAST THEY ACTUALLY COULD SING – unlike the fake, lip syncing popstars of today….
Until you go to his concert, please be quiet on his ability. He sings better LIVE than most people out there do on CD’s today.
Wow – jealous much?
You obviously know diddly-squat about Bret Michaels.
Simon and Paul were pushing for him –
He also was a judge on a Country singing contest….
He has had a 25 year successful career – has a great personality AND was intelligent enough to WIN Celebrity Apprentice, fair and square.
It is funny when MOST people who bash him are men -AND people who know NOTHING about his career or life.
I hate him.
I’m sure you care.
Is there no end to this jerk’s need for the spotlight? Please EW declare a moratorium on any more BM stories until 2011.
I would have started watching AI again if they had Bret as a judge. I was never a fan, but learned about him on Celebrity Apprentice and found him intelligent and entertaining. I think that his upcoming surgery is what eliminated him. I have no interest in the judges that they hired, so I guess that I still won’t be watching.
I agree. I love Bret Michaels! I am not an AI fan (mostly because I get really angry that it messes with the schedules of my Fox shows) but I would totally watch my beloved Bret Bret judge AI.
Sadly I might tend to believe Bret only because Idols final choices were equally as bad/puzzling. J-Lo doesn’t have a movie or music career and Tyler has always been a Grade D- Mick Jagger with crap 90′s “hits” and zero vocal talent. Unless they choose talented contestants the new season of Idol will slay the once mighty ratings giant.
You’re such an idiot. Steven Tyler is a Rock N Roll Icon. He may have a small chance of adding some credibility to the precedings.
I so wanted Bret Michaels for I really dislike the diva Lopez…
A rock legend vs the singer of Un-Skinny-Bop. I think American Idol made the right choice.
Steven Tyler AND Bret Michaels would be better choices —
Bret has already been a judge on a talent show…
THEY are BOTH rock stars…I’m 46 and I like them both – it didn’t have to be one or the other….
It could have been a four person panel OR it could have been Bret AND Steven instead of Steven and J LO.
They’re going to need his personality and sense of humor.
The main problem with Bret getting this job is that he would OUTSHINE the other panel members AND the contestants.
That’s the real reason.
Bret sucked as a judge on Nashville Star. He leered at the comely contestants and made inappropriate comments. He has not had a successful musical career, he’s been on the nostalgia circuit with 6 to 8 other acts at festivals for years. A successful hair band alum with a really great 25+ year career would be Bon Jovi. Now, Michaels is just a desperate has been doing anything he can to be in the spotlight. He’s pathetic. Hopefully his daughters never see old videos of Rock Of Love.
I agree that Steven Tyler has had a great career, but So has Bret. Poison was huge in the day, and they still sell out crowds and have for 25 years. Bret would have been a great choice for AI, I believe the reason he wasnt picked is because he will be having surgery in Jan, and that would be a big month for AI. It is also known that Bret pulls huge ratings on tv. His shows have not only been the highest rated show on VH1 but also in cable television.
All I know is that the duet with Casey James and Bret was one of the best Idol moments EVER!!
Bret is not a has been, His career has been going strong for 25 years. Poison tours pretty much every year and plays sold out shows everywhere as well as Bret’s solo band. Yes the tv shows have boosted his career and he admits it, but Bret is a real nice guy and his fans are loyal to him. He treats every fan with respect, that is what has carried him. He doesnt turn his back on any of his fans. And as far as AI I think it is a mistake not picking Bret but with his surgery being in Jan. He wouldnt be able to do the show anyway. If you dont like Bret then stop reading articles about him, and you wont have to worry about what he is or isnt doing.
