Awkward Family Photos, the TV show

Awkward-Family-PhotosImage Credit: awkwardfamilyphotos.comABC is turning Awkward Family Photos into a show. Read it again and let it sink in: ABC is turning the website (and subsequent book) Awkward Family Photos into a show. A scripted show! A comedy!

Look, the site is hilarious — and sometimes scary — and I’d probably watch a half-hour of just the photos going by, perhaps with the Ken Burns effect so they seem more “alive.” But how will this translate to a sitcom? Maybe it will be set in the ’80s at a photo developing store in a mall. Think of all the wacky hijinx, etc. Maybe it’ll be an anthology-style series, and each week is a brand new cast with a brand new story, all leading up to the taking of an awkward photo. Or maybe it’ll be about the staff at an Olan Mills type place, who take AFPs all day every day.

I’m just spitballing here, PopWatchers. How would you make a show out of Awkward Family Photos? [Variety]

I thought you were misspelling lesion.

Well, I guess in a day and age where television shows are cancelled after one or two episodes, I’m not really surprised by this.

ABC, the network that canceled Pushing Daisies.

The absolute best thing this show could do would be to get Bryan Fuller involved. He probably wouldn’t do it, but for some reason this reminds me of Jayne and her family in Wonderfalls.

    2. Set it during the early ’80s. That’s when the site’s best awkward family photos originate. You’ll have to be careful that it doesn’t turn into ‘that ’80s show’ because that didn’t work.

    3. I would set it in a neighborhood with a group of families and block parties. Like Cougar Town, only awkward.

My first thought was that this shows how bereft of imagination network TV is. Then I realized that I would never have looked at that website and imagined it as a sit-com. So, maybe it shows incredible imagination. Either way, it’s going to blow.

      That’s brilliant.

S!% My Dad Says is bad enough and that actually has some form of a premise. This? This is just… there are no words for how bad.

  • Amy

Hmm…maybe the show is one person looking at the website and each week dreaming up a scenario/storyline for one photo…could be funny initially, but would probably get old quickly.

ABC apparently didn’t learn their lesson after Cavemen. Thanks for canceling Pushing Daisies and Better Off Ted.

      Not to mention Eli Stone.
