IFC picks up Rainn Wilson-starring 'Super' at Toronto

Rainn-Wilson-Super_320.jpg The tights-and-fights comedy Super is itself doing pretty super at the Toronto Film Festival. Following the premiere last night, IFC Films just announced that they have picked up the film for distribution under their new IFC Midnight label.

Super was written and directed by James Gunn (Slither) and stars Rainn Wilson as a mild-mannered man who dons the superhero identity of the Crimson Bolt after his wife leaves him for someone else. Along with his sidekick, played by Ellen Page, he takes to the streets to fight crime, which I presume was always Dwight Schrute’s secret fantasy. Like that other gonzo costumed vigilante flick Kick-Ass, Super promises to be pretty crazy, especially with Gunn, formerly of the low-budget kitchen-sink crazyhouse known as Troma Entertainment, at the helm. In the press release, IFC president Jonathan Sehring called it “one of the most creative and subversive films of the year.” Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon also star.

Vivian took the words right out of my mouth

Not just Fillion, but Michael Rooker and Clark Gregg are back from Slither!
    .
Plus, Andre “Bubbles” Royo, who is fantastic.

  • Looks like a bad ripoff of “Kick-Ass”

    Because it is.

This will go straight-to-DVD. It will be shred by real critics like Gleiberman.

And Gunn will continue to be confined to obscurity… he ripped off “Night of the Creeps” and called it “Slither” and now he ripped off “Kick-Ass” and called it “Super.”lol

He wrote the script 6 years ago and shopped it around this. It is not a rip-off of Kick-Ass– TRUST me. I’ve read the script; there’s nothing the two have in common. this is far more gritty, and off the wall, with doses of pathos Kick-Ass never delivered, or even tried to.

A couple of friends of mine saw this at the midnight showing at TIFF, and said it’s fantastic! I’m excited that it’s picked up a distributor, now I just need a release date!!!
