Image Credit: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty ImagesReading Dave Karger’s excellent analysis on how the awards race is shaping up so far, I started to think about how this could easily be the most exciting Oscars on the fashion front in recent memory. Overstatement? Consider this: Michelle Williams, who is responsible for one of my favorite Oscar gowns of all time, has been getting steady buzz for Blue Valentine. Natalie Portman, whose Black Swan is making waves, wore a stunning ruby Rodarte (pictured here) to her movie’s Venice premiere that would’ve easily earned an A+ on the Academy carpet. (Meanwhile, her co-star Mila Kunis is no slouch in the dress department.)
Even beyond the acting categories, so many of the movies getting Best Picture buzz feature a highly stylish starlet: Blake Lively for The Town, Julianne Moore for The Kids Are All Right, and, if Inception gets the nod, surely co-star Marion Cotillard will turn up in something singularly sensational. Add to that list the early whispers about a Reese Witherspoon movie (How Do You Know) and now you can see why my head is exploding with sartorial glee at the thought of what could be at next year’s ceremony (now to mention the campaign season’s worth of red carpets leading up to it).
So how about you, PopWatchers? Who’d you like to see get nominated for fashion’s sake?

How is a Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy getting Oscar buzz? Yes, she’s a good actress, but that flick doesn’t look like anything special. I’ve said this already, but is anyone else hoping for a nod for Marion Cotillard in Inception?
That movie is getting buzz because it is a James L. Brooks movie… The same reason The Social Network is getting buzz too, because its a David Fincher film.
And I agree about Cotillard. Personally was not a huge fan of Inception, but to say she wasn’t anything short of spectacular would be an understatement.
I saw the trailer for “How Do You Know” and was surprised and disappointed at how uninteresting the film looks. I love almost everyone involved so I hope the trailer was misleading.
James L. Brooks was resposible for 4 Best Actress nominations: Debra Winger and Shirley MacLaine (Terms of Endearment), Holly Hunter (Broadcast News), and Helen Hunt (As Good As It Gets). Two of them won. I’d say that gives Reese a pretty good shot at a nomination. However, Brooks also did Spanglish… so he’s obviously not a sure bet.
I love Spanglish! Or, at least, I find it much more relatable than any movie with Jack Nicholson as a romantic lead.
Blake Lively? Really?
I don’t think she’s saying that Blake Lively will get nominated, but that “The Town” certainly will. Therefore, Blake Lively fills the role of “highly stylish starlet” for that film.
Blake has continued to book jobs on the strength of her work in “The Town”. Apparently it is her acting breakthrough… We’ll see. Also Marion doesn’t deserve ANY nomination for “Inception” and neither does the film. Not even for Visual Effects.
“B” must stand for “Bitter”…
Don’t forget she’s Carol in the upcoming Green Lantern movie.
Don’t count out Anne Hathaway because the trailer for ‘Love and Other Drugs’ was misleading! I predict a nomination at the least!
Anne Hathaway has the best style ever!! And there’s a lot of buzz aboute the movie, hope she gets nominated!
Nicole Kidman…
cotillard please make this happen! Such a memorable and haunting performance! She’s one of the best things in inception. If Lively is nominated i will never have respect for the academy such a joke! Cary Mulligan is far more better actress than her!
yeah, your an idiot
I assume the Michelle Williams gown you’re talking about was the yellow Vera Wang she wore when she was nominated for “Brokeback Mountain.” Agreed, one of the best Oscar gowns…ever.
By the way, were these people paying attention to what this purposefully superficial OscarWatch blog was about? Aren’t you talking about actresses that you’re pretty sure will bring it on the Red Carpet?
Marion Cotillard yes! She should be a new Catwoman too!!
I definitely think Marion Coilltard should get an oscar nom! She was fantastic!!!
I don’t think “The Town” will get any nominations. The reviews are mixed.
the oscars like all award shows are always superficial. it’s supposed to be about the work not the awards that come after it. look for example at Hud it was nominated for 6 oscars and only managed to win two those being best actress in a leading role for Patricia Neal and best actor in a Supporting role for Melvyn Douglas and neither of them accepted their statutettes in person. Douglas was filming in Africa so he sent Co-star Brandon De Wilde to accept on his behalf and Neal was in London waiting to give birth to her fourth child less than a month later so she sent her dear friend french actress Annabella to accept her award in her place. sometimes those who deserve to win don’t for political or ageism reasons like for example Joanne Woodward so deserved to win the best actress oscar in 1991 for Mr & Mrs Bridge but alot of the academy voted against her because she had won previously and the part was opposite her husband
I love how you call Julianne Moore a ‘starlet’!
Goodness, Natalie’s gown in that picture is just STUNNING.
Okay, just Googled the whole look…not crazy about the bottom half of the dress, but the top is fantastic.
