Stephen Colbert being courted for Restoring Truthiness rally

Stephen-ColbertIs Stephen Colbert brave enough to stand in the same spot where Glenn Beck spoke about American freedom just over one week ago? Well, not the same spot, but a few steps lower? That’s what some 32,000 Facebook users are aiming to do with a new grassroots campaign to get the Colbert Report host to emcee a “Restoring Truthiness” rally, designed as a counterpoint to Glenn Beck’s Aug. 28 “Restoring Honor” rally.

The whole thing started with a post on social news site Reddit and has expanded to include a Facebook page and web site touting Oct. 10, 2010 as the target date and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., where Beck’s rally took place, as the chosen venue. The idea is to fundraise and sell merchandise to cover costs, and donate the remaining money to a charity of Colbert’s choice, or one chosen by vote.

Colbert hasn’t responded to the effort yet, but Zachary Pruckowski, a 23-year-old recent graduate of UVA and one of the people who got the ball rolling on the campaign, said Colbert’s staff has been on the receiving end of more than a few emails and is following the campaign online, which shouldn’t be hard considering “restoring truthiness” topped Google Trends for a while today — the result of a concerted effort by supporters dubbed “Operation Strike of Truthiness“.

“The ideal situation would be for Colbert and Comedy Central to run the rally for their own promotional purposes,” he said via email. “Trying to organize an event before it gets too cold in D.C. would be challenging with this late of a start [Beck started planning his rally nearly a year ago] without the backing of a large group like Comedy Central, but it’s not impossible.”

For now, the Pruckowski and the rest of the team is hoping to boost the current number of Facebook members from just over 32,000 to 100,000 and bombard the Colbert Report’s exec producers with pleas emails.

Do you guys think Colbert would jump on board? What is your dream scenario for a Truthiness rally?

UPDATE: On last night’s Report, Colbert acknowledged the campaign, asked a grey goose, and a glass of Grey Goose, whether he should agree to host the rally, then announced that he will be making an important announcement, should Jon Stewart make an important announcement before…oh just watch the clip:

Eh…while I generally like it and think it’s a funny bit, part of what was really discraceful about Beck’s rally was “oh, I didn’t know it was on the same date as MLK…oh well, no backsies”. I don’t think Colbert wants to be insensitive to that.

Stephen, if you come to DC, I’ll be there. Let’s make it a date!

  • ann

I bet at least 1000 people would show up. Not quite the half-million that went to Beck’s rally, but I bet it would get more mainstream coverage.

    • MikeNJD

Uh….Beck didn’t get 500,000 people at his event. INDEPENDENT sources said the number was more like 95,000. Sorry to burst your bubble.

      • Matt

actually, some estimate it closer to 80,000. And I doubt they will get a higher turnout than that.

      • KBJr.

I was there, and there’s no way only 80,000 people showed up. It might have not been 500,000, but it was close.

I was also at Obama’s inauguration, and I know for sure that Beck’s rally wasn’t close to half of the crowd that showed up for that. But those estimates were about 2 million folks. I’d say Beck pulled in between 300-400 thousand.

      • Shawn

Sorry KBJr., but several studies have shown it’s nearly impossible for someone within a crowd to accurately judge the size of the crowd. A number of like 500,000 would mean that there were approx. 5-6 people in every two/three foot square, ie- shoulder to shoulder, front to back, not enough room for the holy ghost, etc., and independent source that used tested and proven technology (NBC simply obtained their number from a park ranger estimating) calculated 87,000 with an error margin of 9,000.

    • Elizabeth

If they asked Michelle Bachman to do the estimating, it would be over a million…

Please don’t mention “her” name associated with an article about Truthiness!

    • johnmacdaniel

The rally by Beck, the bigot, did not have 500,000 people, that was just another lie by him.

  • K. C.

Yes great idea. Very short notice. Could also be a get out and vote rally. Remind people to get out and vote and make their voices heard even in a non-presidental election.

  • rebecca

“restoring truthness” haha!!! that’s a joke right? what truth is there in the lies that Democrats keep on shoving down our throats?

    • steve

Rebecca, the fact that you don’t understand the ‘ironicalness’ of this story is exactly what makes it ‘ironical’. And that’s the truthiness.

      • Creek

        hehe marry me steve

    • stephanie

delusional lady, I think this is exactly what we need right now…someone to highlight the adsurdity of what’s going on in the GOP

    • derpderp

FYI Colbert is political satire. Not democrat, he just makes fun of the various politicians.

    • Red

      No lady, ur the joke….

    • KWise

Yeah, the fact that you have to ask “that’s a joke?” reveals your own stupidity. How would you know if Democrats are shoving lies down your throat if you’re so easily confused by something that is CLEARLY a joke.

  • econruth

More coverage then Beck’s rally? I couldn’t turn to a news channel without seeing it covered ad nauseam. And I’ve seen attendance as quoted anywhere from 87,000 to 300,000. Pretty far from 500,000.

  • gary

101010 in binary is 42. Re: Douglass Adams

    • great bear

      an the? is

  • Alison Dobbs

    We love you Stephen!

  • Bradley Crocks

I’d go without food and send $100 to see this happen…if comedy central doesn’t want to fund it then we could all pitch in to restore Truthiness to American politics. Take it from a wise old guy…this election will be even more important than the last one…washington is watching to see if we have thier backs or not.

  • Nick martin

I’m there, Stephen. Do it! Only you can restore our nation to truthiness!

  • mr. pretty good

did someone say 101010 is binary for 42? becuase i seem to remember that 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Coincidence? maybe, but i think its gods binary way of giving us the go ahead.

    • Celimene

Two of my friends are having their wedding that day for that very reason. They’re not geeks. Not at all. Nooo.

  • vlad

YES! I am coming! This can bring a lot of people together for a goo cause.

    • Podman

…coming…goo cause…I ain’t goin’ anywhere near you people.

  • R W

I would go to this Rally. no matter how far! We love you Stephen!

  • R W

It’s really no joke that All the people who want to keep progressing! Need to vote! please get registered if you need to.

  • ishtar

I’d go. The man rallied Troops in IRAQ and Olympians in BRITISH COLUMBIA. It would be honorable to rally the Hoy Paloy in WASHINGTON DC.
