'Battlestar Galactica' producer Ronald D. Moore working on a magic-themed police procedural for NBC

Ronald-D-MooreImage Credit: Anthony G. Moore/PR PhotosRonald D. Moore’s geek cred runs deep. He co-wrote the final episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. He worked on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He spat in the face of Star Trek: Voyager. Most important for humanity, he partnered with David Eick on the rebooted Battlestar Galactica, about which all you really have to know is that it made the word “Frak” sound cool. For BSG, Moore recorded an essential series of episode commentaries that are about as good as podcasts get — digressive, friendly, and irreverent. (On the commentaries, Moore always makes a point of noting what brand of scotch he’s sipping and what cigarettes he’s smoking while recording.) He may be podcasting again soon: Today, Deadline reported NBC just purchased an expensive-sounding Moore-produced project, set in a fantasy world that the post describes as “an adult Harry Potter.”

NBC wouldn’t comment at this early stage, but sources say the project is a police procedural set in a world of magic. Which, if nothing else, sounds better than Quirky Medical Investigation Procedural #644. Are you intrigued by the prospect of a fantasy-fied cop show, PopWatchers? Could this be a future Cops Rock Winner of the Week? Does this mean that even the show’s producers don’t have time for Caprica anymore?

    Dresden Files, anyone?

    • nikkido

      My thoughts exactly.

      • haha

But guys the Dresden Files sucked!

      • Hezzer

The books don’t suck. They are quite fun.

I actually enjoyed the Dresden Files series…they were only given 10 episodes…no chance to change anything…kinda like how Caprica is being treated I’m afraid. I’ve always thought that shows should be given 2 seasons minimum. That way they get a chance to fix some of the problems that fans want fixed.

      First thought: The Gates.
      Second thought: Dresden Files.

If anyone is going to write this and make it both interesting and “deep” it’s Moore. His work on DS9 and Battlestar is as good as it gets and a lack of involvement in Voyager has to get him bonus points too.

I’m looking forward to it and I’m looking forward to it getting cancelled on a cliffhanger just as we happy viewers in the UK (and around the world) are getting to the really good episode about halfway through.

If anybody can make it work, he can. The problem is that the whole “real world drama with quirky sci/fi twists” genre is just getting tired and stale. See further Lost, FlashForward, Heroes, Fringe, The Event, etc, etc, etc.

Keeping the good work we saw before (BSG) it could be a hit, I guess.

BSG was terrific. Caprica not so much. It will be interesting to see how this pans out though.

Wll at least NBC cancels things quick not like syfi (still wating for caprica.)

actually look to russian writer MAX FREI and THE STRANGER. only read the first one but “adult harry potter” is exactly what i thought of. the seemingly bad translation ruined a lof of the book but the story was ok.

I had an idea for a novel that was essentially about “magic cops” (think Aurors from Harry Potter) but in the US. I did some preliminary work on it until the Dresden Files tv series premiered, and I learned of the books. While the books are about a magic using detective, I decided that perhaps it was a bit too similar and left that behind in the early stages. So, I would like to see RDM do a good job with this as I do like the concept, and I know there is a way to make it distinct from Dresden (even if the comparisons are sure to flow.)

is it just me, or does he resemble a poor man’s Eric Bana?

  • wooster182

Let’s hope this means the main cast is a Cagney and Lacey-esque pairing of Katee Sackhoff and Charisma Carpenter!!

  • Big D

This sounds very cool!! Also, The Dresden Files was great!!

    (gotta love avps)

“damn those wizard cops!” lol. AVPS/AVPM dominates everything else.

What it tells me is that this is that Caprica is lasting exactly one season, which is OK. Let’s wrap the story up and get some good shots of battlestars blowing up on the way out.

I love ronald d moore – he’s a magician of imagination. but I can’t get excited about a freaking cop show. PLEASE. something with an interesting concept like BSG re-imagined or DS9.. I hope it doesn’t have any of the cop show feel at all. i don’t want some stupid investigation episodic bullcrap
