Half of the attractive actors in Hollywood have already been cast in X-Men: First Class, next year’s Matthew Vaughn-directed preboot about the salad days of Professor X and Magneto. Now we can add the former Mrs. Draper to the swelling mutant ranks: Mad Men‘s January Jones will play Emma Frost, a.k.a. the White Queen, a.k.a. the mercilessly hot WASP telepath with a preference for skin-baring outfits. (She also occasionally turns into a diamond form, so yes, she would be a high-maintenance girlfriend.) The character was originally a supervillain but later became an endearingly amoral superhero: it’s not clear which way she’s leaning in First Class, but given that Jones’ de facto expression can best be described as “Icy Disregard for Lesser Beings,” I’m expecting the moral compass to point towards Evil, Evil, Evil.
I’m pretty optimistic. Emma Frost treats normal humans with a mixture of patrician disdain and elitist disgust, which is exactly how Betty Draper Francis treats her daughter Sally. Also, Jones isn’t lacking in the looks department. As a character, the White Queen has an unusually fertile backstory (although it’s difficult to tell just how much First Class is taking from the original comics). It’s entirely possible that she’ll be playing roughly the same role as Mystique in the original X trilogy — a totally hot villainess with few lines — in which case Jones will knock this out of the park. However, one of the best things about the character is how funny she’s become in the hands of creators like Grant Morrison and Joss Whedon — she’s sort of like a younger, angrier, recovering-fascist version of Sex and the City‘s Samantha — and, well, January Jones does not have a good track record in comedy.

yea i’m a little worried about this one. dont know if Jones can do sarcasm like Emma Frost and (not to be piggish) she doesnt have the body for it either. they better give her a great bra!
Emma is an ice queen, but she also has a personality, something Jones (based on her talk show appearances) doesn’t seem to have.
While I’m not a fan of January Jones’ seemingly permanent stank face in real life (like the one in the accompanying photo to this post), I’m actually willing to give her the benefit of the doubt (I think she’d good on “Mad Men”), even if I get the feeling they’re going to lean a lot more toward Frost’s ice queen side than the humor.
Thanks for spoiling the new season of Mad Men for me. I’m in the middle of season 2. Lame.

Nonsense. There’s a limit to how spoiler-conscious you can expect people to be. Once the new season of a show starts, the previous season is fair game for open conversation. You don’t have the right to expect people to censor their comments for spoilers indefinitely.
considering we’re like five episodes into season four, I don’t think it’s the poster’s fault that you haven’t caught up. it’s not really a secret anymore that they’re no longer married. you’re two seasons behind. suck it up.

Can’t say I’m a fan. Derisive disdain is hard to pull off without being a one-note cardboard cutout, something the Ice Queen, despite her fetish appearance, is decidedly not.

Apparently she asked to be released from the project due to script changes she didn’t like. Not much faith in FOX getting this film to work.
If Emma Frost pouts, smokes, and looks pensive all the time, then January is the right choice!
she’ll do fine. Betty Draper is a sourpuss with a blank stare, January Jones has enough range to pull it off. Watch her other stuff besides “Mad Men” and you’ll see.

i think she’s just going to be terrific in the role, she’s unfairly uderrated. With a good director like Mr Vaughn she will shine no doubt. Kudos MIss Jones for the get.
