'Dragon Tattoo' casts its Lisbeth Salander: Have you seen Rooney Mara in previous roles?

Rooney Mara just landed the role of Lisbeth Salander in the U.S. remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. We’ve known for weeks now that director David Fincher had hoped to cast an unknown for the lead role in the hottest literary adaptation in development right now (or possibly ever?), and that’s why we here at PopWatch HQ don’t feel too bad about not having any recollection of seeing Mara on screen beyond the trailer for The Social Network (where she plays Erica). Heck, not even a scan of her IMDb credits could jog our memories. Is this like a S1m0ne thing? Did Fincher just whip up a “Rooney Mara” prototype with his dark and stylish puppetmaster claws? Take a gander at Rooney’s credits and see if any bells ring or ER sirens go off.

–Nancy Holbrook in 2010’s A Nightmare on Elm Street
–Fernanda in Tanner Hall
–Taggarty in Youth in Revolt
–Tara in Friends (With Benefits)
–Megan in two 2009 episodes of ER
–Wendy in The Winning Season
–Courtney in Dare
–Rebecca Smith in an episode of TV’s The Cleaner
–Evelyn in Dream Boy
–Alexis Sherman in a 2007 episode of ABC’s one-season wonder Women’s Murder Club
–Jessica DeLay in one episode of SVU
–And her first role in something called Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (!)

If you remember her, did she stand out for you? Will her talents translate to Dragon? All must be revealed! In fact, if you’ve ever seen Rooney Mara do anything, brag about it in the comments!

I’ve only heard of her role in Nightmare on Elm Street and apparently she sucked. So, I’m not too syked about her bringing to life one of the most complex literary characters.
However, her sister, Kate, is very talented, so hopefully it runs in the family.

  • Drew

She was funny in an almost silent part in Youth in Revolt.

    • Elysia

I don’t remember her role, although I saw this movie recently. Can you job my memory?

      • Drew

She was the attractive roommate who collected photos of guys with grades on each. She hooks up with Cera’s friend at the boarding school.

  • Karen

She’s Kate Mara’s sister. We all know Kate from “Shooter,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Iron Man 2,” “Entourage”…

    • Madd

Really? I thought Kate did a great job in Brokeback Mountain.

  • Dan

    Nope. Never seen her before.

  • Jose

Was she the main character in “Nightmare on Elm Street”? That’s the only thing I’ve seen her in.

I guess I can begin to scrutinise her prowess in The Social Network. I really hpope that she pulls off a Heath Ledger and really transforms into Salander.

  • Nat

Don’t know her, but I think she has a really interesting face and good bone structure to play Lisbeth. I don’t know why that matters to me, but apparently it does.

She is descended from the men who founded the Steeler and Giant football dynasties. She didn’t come to the game to lose.

As a Pittsburgher, I can’t believe I didn’t notice that! It is now my official duty to see this movie at all costs. Thanks, man!

  • Katie

When I see that name, it looks as if it’s been mistakenly reversed and her name is actually Mara Rooney.

She was terrible in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET – serious overacting. I think casting her in this role is a mistake, but Sony seems to be pimping out anyone in THE SOCIAL NETWORK. They gave Spider-Man to Andrew Garfield, which also seems like an odd choice considering the whole point on rebooting the franchise was to make Spidey younger again. Garfield turns 27 in a few days. Mara must have given one hell of a screen test for this.

Only NOES. And since that’s the worst movie I’ve seen this year, she can only do better than that.

  • JMaG

She was terrible in Nightmare on Elm Street. But, I guess anyone would be in that talentless role.

I knew that she would land the role for weeks. I still wish it was someone like Emily Browning or ellen Page, but I’m glad the wait is over. Rooney will be good, I know it. At first, I was sort of dissapointed that the others were not taken seriously, but I think out of the four actresses in the running Mara was the best. The Daily Beast and several other sites claimed today that she was now in favor of winning the role. I’m glad a.

With due respect, you based your opinion on Mara being the best choice from watching her Razzie, er, Oscar-worthy performance in the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot? Her connections got her this role; she’s the granddaughter of the owners of the Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.

    • Erin

Me too. I wouldn’t mind Emily Browning though was hoping for Mia Wasikowska. The fact that she’s been in the sucky sucky sucky Urban Legend sequel and A Nightmare on Elm Street… there’s a few black marks against her there.

I’m very disappointed. Yes she may do a Ledger and transform (though I hate the saying as seriously, who doubted he couldn’t pull that joker off? He’s always been very adaptable) but the fact that they’re Americanizing this wonderful book series, a series which has already been made into a great set of movies, and then with this girl as Lisbeth? Not impressed.

      • Sam

I don’t know why Emily Browning was turned down for the role because she could definitely play Lisbeth. I could imagine her playing the part when I read the books. Emily Browning and Mia Wasikowska wanted the role, but David Fincher didn’t ask them to audition. Production Weekly said that Rooney and Emily were the finalists on twitter, but that was proven false. I mean I think Fincher gave Rooney Mara the role because he knows her from The Social Network, she entered the running on his recommendation, so he wouldn’t have given her the role if he didn’t think she could do it. But, I wasn’t surprised when she landed the role.

    • My Name

Well, the woman who just won this important role will more than likely be nominated for a Razzie next February for her epic “performance” in the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. A complete disgrace, this choice was. Total, absolute disgrace.

      • A-K87

Was she THAT bad. I’m going to have to hire it on LOVEFiLM now!!

Sounds like shes got a hill to climb to be knocking about in the big leagues with Noomi Rapace.

  • Rick Gershman

She didn’t make much of an impression of me in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, but that was so poorly-directed it might not be her fault. Connie Britton, who’s been good in Friday Night Lights and several other things, is just awful in that movie. Outside of music videos, I don’t think Samuel Bayer can direct much more than traffic.

  • PaulH

    Test

    • Rosalie

Absolutely not happy about the choice. I don’t see how she can pull off the role or the look. Noomi Rapace was perfect and just how I pictured Lisbeth while reading the book. I’m not thrilled with the options, but I think of the choices Ellen Page would be my pick I guess, but oh how I wish Angelina Jolie was the right age, she would have been perfect.
