Image Credit: Darren Michaels/Lifetime TelevisionAs the owner of one of the shortest attention spans known to TV land, I’m often hesitant about fully committing to a new series. But I have to say, I’m already in love with On the Road with Austin and Santino.
This week, the boys headed for Ruston, La. where Army Capt. Rosaline Johnson was in need of a dress for her graduation party. As one might expect, between her tour of duty in Iraq, her education, and motherhood, our protagonist had found little time in recent years to make fashion a priority. What was nice about Rosaline (as well as Sadie, the subject of last week’s season premiere) was the fact that she was totally sympathetic without ever asking for sympathy and inspiring — without the show overbearingly shoving the “inspirational” message down our throats. That’s a nice change of pace for a reality makeover show.
Cut to our designing duo for some dress-making and plantation antics. More of the latter, really. I’m finding that the show really has less to do with fashion and more to do with the effect fashion has on people. As a follow-up to a show like Project Runway, I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Of course, this wouldn’t be an episode with hilarious sound bites. These were my favorites:
“She’s actually graduating with her Master’s, which will make her a Captain and a master.” — Austin
“In my past life, I was definitely a Belle and wore a hoop skirt every day” — Austin
“Austin Scarlett O’Hara.” — Santino
“Oh grandpapa, why couldn’t you ever accept me?” — Austin, talking to an oil painting
“He was covered with froth and bubbles, and I was covered in icing and candles. Both there together in our birthday suits, just having a gay ole time.” — Austin
What about you, PopWatchers? Are you tuning in to Austin and Santino? What did you think of last night’s show?

I don’t watch this show, but does that guy always look like a Twilight vampire?!
Yes.
God, I wish I could see this.
Lord help, I don’t know which one you mean. I’ve never seen Twilight!
Santino!! “Andre…he’s our precious little lamb.”
“Andre, I want to take you to Red Lobster.”
Santino was genius impersonating Tim Gunn.
Which one?
I’m hooked too! Austin exploring the house, carrying that candle and talking to the oil painting, was priceless.
I laughed until I cried at that!
I’d be curious to know how those 2 ever hooked up.
Scarlett and Santino were both on Project Runway.
So what is the relationship between these two? Is it just a TV relationship? Are they “together” together. They have great reality show chemistry, that’s for sure.
it’s a tv relationship i think. Santino is bi, but I don’t think they are dating or anything.
I love this show too. At first I was worried about the concept but it is the most kindhearted and loving show.
Austin got a little too close to the curtains with that candle…I was afraid that plantation was about to be gone with the wind…
I enjoy this show…2 opposite personalities who get along…Austin looks like a porcelain doll…
Yeah – when I first heard about the concept, I thought there would be lots of capital-D “Drama!” between Austin and Santino, but they really complement each other well and are SO hilarious together!

The “birthday suit” scene was priceless. Who would ever have imagined *Santino* taking a bubble bath and playing with the bubbles?

I think I’m starting to get more excited to see this show than I am PR itself
I love this show!! My favorite part was when Austin was playing with the little figures and later went to sleep with them! Austin exploring the house was my absolute favorite moment!!
@Anderson – “kindhearted and loving show” – YES, that’s it. I was so afraid they would look down their noses at the small-town bumpkins, but they’re self-effacing and friendly and they genuinely want to please their clients.
Couldn’t agree more! There is so much snarkiness and bad manners out there, but these 2 never make fun of their clients. They seem to genuinely appreciate the lives that these women lead, and I love Austin and Santino for it. Just a fantastic, fun and uplifting show. Thanks!
This is a great show. Santino, who has been know to be something of a “camera hog,” has wisely stepped back a few paces and has let Austin (who has a razor sharp wit and self-deprecating manner)take the lead. It makes for a charming combination that shows both guys at their best. WONDERFUL concept and SPECTACULAR idea to choose these two. LOVE IT ! ! !
I would write bad checks just to drink Santino’s bath water. I must have replayed that lather scene a hundred times.
ew
ick
I was afraid they’d sneer at each other and the people they meet, but instead they banter back and forth and seem to respect each other without ever maliciously making fun.
Lifetime officially became my favorite new channel with this show – Austin and Santino make the perfect witty, creative pair. They also made a good call with Project Runway in adding the extra half-hour to the designers because the show was getting too rote. Who cares about bitchy, superficial models anyway?
ya. I don’t miss the models show. In fact, did they remove the model’s prize as well? I would swear I have not heard Heidi say the “…and the model paired with the winning designer…” part of her speach this season.
The model show was totally boring. Hope its gone for good!
No, the model still gets the prize – “a fashion spread in Marie Claire and $25,000 furnished by L’Oreal Cosmetics”

I kind of liked the “Models of the Runway” show, but have NO problem at all swapping it out for the Austin and Santino show! LOL
I love this show!! Its positive and these two guys are just awesome! Thanks for this show!!
