Joseph Gordon-Levitt should host the season premiere of 'SNL'

Joseph-Gordon-LevittImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosJoseph Gordon-Levitt should host the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. There, I said it. Inception‘s the summer’s buzziest movie so far, and Gordon-Levitt’s been a total charmer on every talk show promoting it. He’s funny (read his blog!), he’s done it before with aplomb, and this summer doesn’t have another pop rallying point. Team JGL!

I do think there’s a legit chance that JGL will host, but I wouldn’t be too surprised to see Steve Carell do it, either: He’s had two movies this summer, and he’s gearing up for his final season of The Office, which conveniently airs on NBC. Julianne Moore, fresh off The Kids Are All Right, is another possibility, or maybe Katy Perry, from whom summer jams flow.

Who do you want to see host the premiere, PopWatchers?

just as long as he reenacts another one of his grandmothers favorite musicals, then i am in!!! Make ‘em Laugh!

I’m more thinking, so long as he doesn’t turn every sketch into his own musical number again, then maybe…

    Why waste the talent?
SNL’s time has been long over. Quit trying to drum up interest in this sad series, EW!

    • Also…

Can we stop with the “Team such and such” crapola?
      It’s sooooo 2009.

  • Bobby’s Robot

He was one of the best hosts last season.

    • Ceballos

Agree that he was really good, even if the material wasn’t the best.

Still, Gordon-Levitt WAS really good, and I think he’s got the potential to be in that next generation (along with Jon Hamm and Justin Timberlake) of performers who host about once a year (the gold standard being Baldwin/Martin/Walken).

If not Levitt, then it would actually be cool to see a funny lady host.

I really like JGL, but his SNL hosting stint last year wasn’t anything special. It was honestly kind of annoying how nearly every sketch turned into an opportunity for him to show off his musical talent. It was like he was trying to promote an upcoming musical role or a debut album.

      • Alex

But yeah, a funny lady would be great to see. It may seem out of nowhere, but Megan Mullally is great on Children’s Hospital, and I don’t think she’s ever hosted before.

      • Ceballos

I see what you’re saying…I still say he was a good host, even if the material was actually pretty bad. (If that makes sense.)

Hopefully next week we can have an article about how Michael Cera has to host. It’s insane that he hasn’t – one of the top comic actors of his generation and he hasn’t hosted SNL. Fair enough, he hosted a benefit one during the writer’s strike, but I want him on TV. Hopefully we can have a first-timer for the season premiere, not someone who did a middling job the first time.

While watching his unforgettable hallway sequence in Inception, I kept thinking back to his opening number on SNL, all that singing and dancing. The guy’s got so much versatility. Love him.

  • CinephileSandra

God I love him. I would be so excited if he hosted again, he was quite charming the first time round!

  • jfms777

How about the Salahis as hosts? Think about it. The producers could provide the audience with AK-47s and the event will become a shooting range. Guaranteed ratings-getter.

    • Brett

Add the “Jersey Shore” cast, and you’re off to a really good start.

  • Emma Hyde

Team JGL! I love his interviews because unlike alot of people in the business he seems real.

  • Chanda

He was great last time – LOVED the Say Anything sketch at the end of the show! Genesis is back together again!

    • Amy

I loved that sketch too, but Jason Sudeikis was the funniest part.

  • sadly, but true

I’m with Chris (above) on this. SNL is a wasted time

  • j

    Tom Hardy.

  • Joseph T

great idea! would love to see him host again and your idea of Ms Moore is excellent too.

  • Martin Haro

I would love to see a good mix of seasoned hosts and first-timers on “SNL.” Give Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin a break, for sure. I think last year, the Betty White experiment gave the show a new confidence, in a way, so I would love to see more of that. No necessarily with older players, but with fresh blood. Get Chelsea Handler in there. Call Sandra Bernhard. And get more random cameos in – those always kill.

    • Rusty Shackleford

I agree, they either have the same host over and over or just the “teen” sensation of the day. Give some veteran actors who have never hosted before a shot.

    • Brett

Chelsea Handler is spectacularly unfunny, and since she’s not sleeping with anyone else but the head honcho of E!, it’s doubtful she’ll get on SNL.

  • thecheappopdotcom

    Paul Rudd with Eminem.

    • Nicole

This. Also, JGL was great and I’d love to see him back. Plus, we can’t forget the best host of last season, Zach Galifianakas. He was so great – I still laugh thinking about the pageant skit at the end.

The show really needs to make a point of securing hosts who are comfortable doing live comedy. When they get hosts who are just “in the news” or promoting projects but aren’t comfortable with the format, it ruins the whole epiosde (hello January Jones, most athletes, tons of other past hosts). They need to concentrate on comedians and actors/athletes/singers with good comedic instincts and timing (Jon Hamm, Justin Timberlake, Peyton Manning, who was surprisingly very funny when he hosted).

  • talli

I think Tom Hardy should do it. He was really the scene stealer in Inception and the best actor in it.

And I think he has some untapped comedic potential that I would love to see him exercise on some of SNL’s skits

    • Carrie #2

Ah, you took the words right out of my mouth! His appearance would certainly get people to know who he is, and he does seem like a very funny guy. I’d rather he host than JGL because the only two good things about his hosting gig last time around were the Singin’ in the Rain tribute and the “Two Worlds Collide” digital short, which he wasn’t even in. Tom Hardy all the way!

    • Ceballos

…another bonus: Tom Berenger could show up and perform a skit in his place.

      • Madd

        Yes.

      • Judy McCrea

Yes…Get Hardy and get Tom Berenger back on T.V.

  • Cindi

Julianne Moore would be great. I went to college with her, and not only is she multi-talented, but she is also a really nice person.

    TEAM CAROL BURNETT!!
