'American Idol': Nigel Lythgoe endorses Randy returning, revamping semi-finals: 'I can't wait for the day we take the spotlight off the bloody judges'

nigel-lythgoeImage Credit: Toby Canham/Getty ImagesNigel Lythgoe has certainly had quite a week. After flying to Washington D.C. to celebrate National Dance Day, the So You Think You Can Dance exec producer and judge formally announced his return as an exec producer of American Idol, and then launched right into the penultimate week of SYTYCD‘s seventh season. But when EW caught up with him backstage tonight at CBS Television City after the SYTYCD results show, all that activity still didn’t stop the irrepressibly loquacious Brit from holding forth on several pressing Idol topics. (Expect another post with Lythgoe’s thoughts on the impending SYTYCD finale soon.)

Although Lythgoe insists that he has not been privy to any negotiations with replacements for Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres’ seats at the Idol judges’ table, he heartily endorsed the return of judge Randy Jackson, who still has one year left on his Idol contract. Expanding on his comment in a Variety interview that Jackson was the show’s ”barnacle,” Lythgoe tells EW, “For me, a barnacle is secure, it’s solid.” Lythgoe also batted away criticism that he meant the term disparagingly, chuckling, “[People] said, ‘Oh no, it means that he’s stuck.’ Yeah, he’s stuck, and we need him stuck there. He’s the one person who’s gone through this entire mess, if you’d like.” For Lythgoe, the most important element is the chemistry between the judges, not their individual star wattage. “We’ve seen over the last two years some really great people that haven’t fitted together, as far as I’m concerned,” he says. “Don’t forget, [when Idol first started] we introduced two people you’d never heard of — Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson. It doesn’t always need this, ‘They’ve done this, they’ve done that!’”

One thing Lythgoe wants to make clear, however, is that he would much rather be talking about future contestants than the future of the judging panel. “I can’t wait for the day when we take the spotlight off the bloody judges,” he says, emphatically tapping a nearby table. To that end, Lythgoe suggests that the show should include a new round after Hollywood week but before America votes in which the remaining contestants are put through further mentoring and training to prepare them to perform. “Say we end up with 50 kids,” says Lythgoe. “I don’t want to give them to America. I think it’s really tough to say to America, ‘Here’s 50 people, who do you like? Vote!’ You’re voting on the song, or what they’re wearing, or because they’ve got a handsome or pretty face. You’re not voting on their talent, because you don’t know it! And why should you? I would love to whittle that down more…to take them through [a refining] process. You don’t want to expose a lack of talent; you want to celebrate the best talent that you’ve got.”

So what could that process entail? After referring to 19 Entertainment recently dropping Sony Music for Universal Music Group as the label that signs Idol contestants, Lythgoe says, ”If we’ve got Universal Music this year, let’s bring in Universal stars, let them mentor, chat, whatever.” He also seems to suggest filming contestant makeovers. “If they’ve got a tooth missing,” he says, “why not take them to a dentist and give them a tooth? If they turn ’round and say, ‘I don’t want a f—ing tooth,’ great, at least we know who you are! At least we know that you’re standing up for yourself, and you want to keep that old sloppy sweater on when we try to put you in an Armani suit. At least you are distinguishing who you are, because until we know them, we don’t know if we like them.”

Another thought from the SYTYCD impressario: Dance lessons! “These kids walk with the same arm and leg [like in a march],” he says. “You say, ‘Right, we’re going to dance [in a group number],’ they become this soldier with dyslexia of the body.”

Before Lythgoe wrapped up the interview, however, he also wanted to underline one last point: He is not the final word on all things American Idol. “I’m getting so much exposure with this,” he said wearily, “I do want to stress that I’m part of a team. I don’t mind saying let’s look at this, and let’s do that and see if [fellow exec producers Simon Fuller, Ken Warwick, and Cécile Frot-Coutaz] agree or disagree. I’m part of a team.”

What do you think of Nigel’s ideas, PopWatchers? Do you think the rest of the Idol team should heed his words?

Anyone out there buying that load of crap about Randy being a “barnacle” in the nicest, most positive of ways? Really? Who’s the P.R. genius who came up with that one? It’s actually pretty darned funny.

    • Brianna

Randy rocks! I loved when Lythgoe said: Randy is secure, solid and we need Randy, he’s the one person who’s gone through this entire mess. I knew Randy would still be on the show for season 10. I know a great person when I see one.

      • Russell

I agree. I’m glad that Randy is still on the show.

      • Jaymii

Randy takes up such a small amount of time with his comments anyway, its no problem.

      • Vince

Randy has a good personality. He’s not some serious and boring person. He’s a excellent worker, so it’s going to be great having him on the show again.

      • Angelica

I knew they weren’t going to fire him. He’s been there since day 1. Paula and Simon are gone, so that means Randy better stay for a long time!

      • Cassie

I think there’s a good possibility that Nigel meant that as a compliment. In the dictionary it says that a barnacle is a person or thing that is difficult to get rid of. If you think that someone is smart and stands out too much, then it is difficult to get rid of them, because you need them. I’m very happy that Randy is staying. Very nice news.

      • jared4ever

Randy is going to seem even more hopelessly out of touch now that Simon is gone. A barnacle is a parasite and he has done nothing but get rich off AI and given nothing in return except for tired, awkward phrases like “Dawg” and useless and irrelevant feedback for contestants.

      • Wes

Good, Randy deserves to be on season 10. I wonder what he had to go through working on this show. Like Nigel said, he’s the one person who’s gone through this entire mess.

      • LOL

Funny website. Entertainment Weekly is crazy.

      • Jessica

        Good news! lol

      • Jane

He’s still on the show because he has one year left on his contract, not because he’s articulate, adds anything to the proceedings or anything like that.

      • well

They can still fire someone if that person is not doing their job right. It’s much harder to fire someone on a contract, but they can if the person is absolutely not doing their job. So obviously Randy is doing enough to keep his job.

    • Jane

I’m definitely buying the barnacle allusion. I mean, barnacles are parasites that need to be removed in order to protect the integrity of the boat’s hull. That’s what he meant, right?

      • tomm

Barnacle means something else in British English, duh!! Get a clue, nerds.

      • jared4ever

tomm, you’re an idiot, we all know what a barnacle is and so does Nigel. You seem to be the only one who doesn’t.

      • Mandy

Duh….. Tomm – word means the same in both “languages”!

      • Stormy

Barnacle to a Brit means permanently fixed in place. Nothing derogatory there at all. Randy is a permanent part of AI that’s all. And rightly so. Love Randy and he’ll have his mojo back now with that pompous ass gone.

    • Sarah D

Here, to call a girl homely is to call her ugly. In England it’s a compliment, seriously. So, I’m going to take his word on this.

    • T.C.

I’m completely shocked by all the Randy love. So I’ll accept that some of you think he’s “nice” (I don’t), but he is seriously the biggest waste of time and space on television. I get upset when I think about how much money he makes. And then everyone on this thread keeps talking about how much he deserves to stay because he’s so nice. So being nice makes you a competent judge of talent? Is there anyone out there who thinks they couldn’t do a better job? The guy has absolutely nothing interesting or relevant to say. I don’t get it–I think you all are must have a sentimental attachment to him for no other reason than that he’s been around for so long. That’s the only way I can explain it.

      • Mac

You’re exactly right. Nice isn’t really anything special — forgettable really. I wish the producers would scrub the show clean, starting with Seacrest and Jackson.

      • Teresa

For me, (for you), I get the feeling that Randy Jackson’s biggest contribution isn’t the scintillating dialogue at the judge’s table, but that he does have a good eye for talent. What keeps with me is that during Adam Lambert’s audition, while Simon thought Adam was too theatrical, and Kara and Paula focused on his voice, Randy was the one judge who thought that Adam was “current.”
That was a dead-on assessment and not at all obvious. What it tells me is that Randy doesn’t just know music and the industry, but that he’s looking forward. That’s a good perspective to have involved in the show, even if it doesn’t always translate into a coherent critique.

  • jordan

i like a lot of what he said.

but randy? seriously. he’s a joke. take a risk, idol- have two female judges and drop randy and keep kara. seriously. so much for a “post-feminist” america. and please oh please do not replace simon with steven tyler. how does he even talk with those lips? i won’t be able to concentrate on what he is saying…

    • Brianna

They don’t want Kara on the show. They fired her. Get over her and get a new crush.

      • Stormy

I’m disappointed that he said nothing about revamping the voting policy. As for Randy, I think he’ll shine now that Darth Cowell is gone.

    • Anne

I’d like to see Kara come back. They’d be crazy to drop the only person who gives constructive criticism and who had cred as a songwriter (notable exception being No Boundries)

    • J IN SAN JOSE

No way – keep Kara gone. I like her music but her comments seem like they last 10 minutes and she does not say that much.

    • Diane

You won`t be able to hear Steven Tyler`s comments because of his big lips…funny, we can surely understand him when he sings with those big beautiful lips.

  • Nick

Randy Sucks….and if he thinks he works, then god help us all

    • Shirley

Reba McIntyre, Harry Connick Jr and Kelly Osbourne

      • Brianna

        Randy is a great worker.

      • Jack

Kelly Osbourne is a bad choice!

      • DeborahB

        ug, ug and huh?

      • echo134

        what about SLASH

    • Kiki

      ITA.

Randy’s ineptitude was amusing in the beginning. I’m no longer laughing because I’m amused. I’m laughing in contempt and derision.

      • Stormy

Randy isn’t inept. It was Randy and Paula against Simon that saved Daughtry and David Cook from elimination.

      • Mac

Both fantastic artists… er, maybe not. Daughtry’s rock is for 15 year old girls or adults who don’t know any better. Utter crapola that’s a pale immitation of just about anything by anybody else with an electric guitar.

      • Stormy

Still better than Dimwyze and Dirtysox.

      • echo134

        SLASH

  • gigi

I’m probably the only one who doesn’t have a problem with Randy. Yeah, he’s a bit annoying, but professionally speaking he’s a producer, a musician, worked with musicans, and knows the industry. He knows what it takes to make it in the biz. Keep him and get others who are equally knowledgeable.

    • AE

You are not alone. It’s silly of others to criticize someone who’s been there from the start. Even sillier to want to keep lame Kara DioGuardi.

      • Brianna

        I agree! Randy rocks!

      • Stormy

Randy doesn’t pick a favorite and trash everyone else. He says what he thinks about each single performance. And he’s comfortable to watch, Kara always made me want to switch channels ’til she was through.

    • Eric

Too bad he doesn’t use that knowledge as a judge, because I’ve yet to see it happen.

      • Brianna

You’re prejudice. Get it together you loser!

      • vader1013

Brianna, Eric never called Randy’s race into question. it’s not being “prejudiceD” to say that Randy doesn’t contribute anything to the judging process, because it’s the truth- him being black has nothing to do with it. i would argue that the more racist comment was in fact YOUR comment, as you implied that black people will not be judged on their actual qualifications and contributions, but by their skin color. you can’t scream “prejudice!” every time someone says something about a black person that you don’t like.

      • Betty

Vader, why cant they scream “prejudice”, they do it for everything and to everybody.

      • jared4ever

I agree Vader, the real racist here Brianna.

      • DivaSoulSista

Betty, who is the “they” in the comment that you are referring to?

    • chris ford

Randy needs to step it up. He is a pretty easy-going guy so he will have no problem getting chemistry with whoever the other two judges are.
He was phoning it in and speaking in cliches though, so he needs to be challenged to again work as hard as he did the 1st 7 years.
As in – you have one year left on your contract and perhaps the highest paid job for the least amount of work in all of showbiz – don’t blow it.

Jackson was good in linking the performers to the audience – giving reasons why certain viewing demos should like this or that person. Not full of himself as “judge!”. He always kept his ego in check.

Jackson was also very good at picking talent who were outside Top 2 he thought would have commercial success down the road. Hudson, Castro, Smithson, Iraheta, Doolittle, Daughtry, etc.
His picks this year were Siobhan Magnus to have a good shot at a major career – “you are memorable” – and Aaron Kelly who Jackson said could be a feature country artist some day. And Jackson said that before Aaron Kelly had his performing breakthrough.

      • @Chris Ford

Randy did not “pick” anyone for anything. He made positive comments for all of the them. The only thing Siobhan got “picked” for was 5th place.

      • DivaSoulSista

Randy has been phoning it in for the past couple of years and I agree he needs to step it up. Since this is the last year on his contract, maybe it will serve as a wake-up call if he wants to get another contract, he needs to actually do some real judging.

    • trueenough

I’m with you..Is Randy goofy? Sure, but I’ll take him anyday over a bunch of others. I’d actually be bummed if he was gone..plus I’d miss Slezak’s writing about him!

  • EmilyR

I liked ALL of what he said except for the Randy part. Sorry Randy, you were good next to Paula and Simon, but the love is gone.
But YES to voting for TALENT and not looks or someone Kara just picks to be “awesome” with his acoustic country guitar. I want to have goosebumps like the early seasons Nigel!!

  • DanOregon

The problem with Idol is you can’t just replace Simon. You have to get a judge who is better than him, since the show needs someone to be honest, but not be so snarky that they seem to be doing it just for effect. I’d go with a female music industry person who has made their fortune, doesn’t care if they’re hated and give real constructive criticism.

  • krys

I too have no problem with Randy and I am glad and in agreement with Nigel that AI has to have some of the old and familiar to really continue being called American Idol. He had a good point though. No one knew Simon or Randy before AI so bringing in new people is not a new decision. I mean they got it right the first time. Why couldn’t they now?

  • Butters

the problem with american idol is… ryan gaycrest! :D

    • tomm

Gay jokes are so 1971, get real.

      • ER

Give the gay community some credit. They’ve contributed to enrichment in the arts out of all proportion to their numbers. Leonardo DaVinci, Michaelangelo, Oscar Wilde etc. Too long a list, but they are wonderfully creative and lovable.

    • DivaSoulSista

I really want Ryan gone. It has nothing to do with his sexuality and everything to do with his arrogance and how many cringe-worthy moments he created last season (Didi Benami interview, anyone?).

      • Adelia

I totally agree with you: Ryan is so out of place. Get rid of him and everything will be O.K. He is totally arrogant!

  • Sharon

I like the idea of adding a makeover/teaching/mentoring segment to the semifinals part of the show. Use this to replace some of the first hateful interviews. Thumbs up for Nigel on this one.

    • echo134

      AXL ROSE

    • LoveVioletFlame

Agree, Sharon! That extra week of getting to know the contestants, and giving them some mentoring and training to prepare them to perform I think is brilliant. Loved all Nigel’s suggestions (I KNOW! I was surprised, starting with more focus on the kids, less on the judges!

  • as

I can’t wait for the day that we take the spotlight off the bloody judges….that’s priceless Nigel considering SYTYCD is about nothing but the bloody judges….judges who have poor chemistry to boot. Better fix your own house Nigel.

  • Blair

Lythgoe is such a phony…back-pedaling on his statement about Jackson. Barnacles are items that need to be removed to clean a rusty ship. Obviously, he doesn’t want to be judge if he wants to take the spotlight OFF the judges. He so loves being in the spotlight and listening to himself talk. Speaking of ships….it will be satisfying to see this narcissist go down with the Idol boat. No wonder Simon left.

    • Cassie

The dictionary does not say that they need to be removed. It talks about a barnacle being a person or thing that is difficult to get rid of. When you need someone, it is difficult to get rid of them.

      • Blair

Thank you, Webster. I was generalizing: to infer a general principle rather than a particular fact. My point was, N.L. most certainly WOULD like to have a clean slate to start with.

  • ashley

kara finally gets her act together and they fire her? and keep randy? has he said ANYTHING of merit in the last 5 years or so? he just says white noise.
not watching the show anymore. goodbye, idol. i didn’t really enjoy you in the first place, except for crystal, adam, allison, and kris.
    it’s been fun. sometimes.

  • petra

Your love of Kara was generally not shared. The polls Idol did were coming up with an average ranking of 2 for Kara on a scale of 10. With zero the score for “very much dislike” and ten an “outstanding part of Idol”.
YES, she tried harder than Cowell and Jackson who were pretty much phoning it in.
But Kara was irritating and blatantly biased for and against certain performers.

    • Buh-bye Kara

      I agree, Petra.

I think I gave Kara a decent chance to win me over.

I really had no strong opinion coming into the second season, but her over-the-top cougar antics with the James kid last season were nauseating.

  • vader1013

here’s an idea- change the judges on the show every single season. why do there have to be the same judges every year? there’s no reason at all. that would create some pre-season excitement, at least, with the announcement of the upcoming season’s judges every year. ps- i haven’t watched this show in two years because it became so insanely boring and predictable.

  • girlUK

I wish they hadn’t gotten rid of Kara, she actually knew what she was talking about! Glad they’re keeping Randy…
