Brandon Routh as Superman again? Why not?

superman-routhImage Credit: David JamesWhen it comes to superhero movies, there are three truisms: 1) One good villain is worth more than three bad ones. 2) The sequel is usually better, but the threequel is always worse. 3) Superman Returns was a major disappointment. It’s not as if Bryan Singer’s movie did poorly at the box-office – it made a little less than $400 million worldwide, which is more than any of your movies made in 2006 unless your name is Brett Ratner – but the film has accumulated a serious stink around it, probably only behind Ang Lee’s Hulk on the list of “Films Fanboys Hate.”

Brandon Routh just spoke to Empire about the mysterious new Superman reboot currently being conceived by those irascible Nolan brothers. Routh amenably said, “I would love the opportunity to be back…we’ll see what Chris and Warner Bros. has to say about it.” It’s a good bet that the Brothers Nolan won’t ask him back. (Christopher Nolan has yet to return EW’s calls for comment.) They want to leave their own mark on the franchise – these are the same guys who made a Batman movie without a Batcave. And That’s totally cool. But PopWatchers, it’s time to take a second look at Superman Returns. Especially when superhero movies are starting to feel a bit samey-samey, Superman Returns is looking like more of an eccentric curiosity: a superhero movie that seems utterly uninterested in being a superhero movie. (Read Owen Gleiberman’s review here: He gave it a B!)

Everyone knows that Bryan Singer set out to make  an homage to the original Superman movies; hence the deployment of John Williams’ jaunty 1978 score, and the zombie digitization of the late Marlon Brando as Jor-El. That makes Superman Returns a dollhouse recreation of a ’70s movie that was already a ’30s pastiche. That’s a lot of retro for one movie. When you throw in Routh, who eerily plays Christopher Reeve playing Superman playing Clark Kent, Superman Returns feels more like a missing chapter from Grindhouse than a movie with a fast-food tie-in.

I’m not saying the film is perfect. Kate Bosworth is miscast as Lois Lane. Practically nothing happens in the middle of the movie. But the more you watch Superman Returns (and it seems to be on TV constantly), some of the film’s flaws start to seem appealingly gonzo. James Marsden plays a character whose only purpose is to be the coolest man alive – people, he owns a prop plane. And Lex Luthor’s henchman are so stupid, they might as well be carrying bags imprinted with dollar signs.

Okay, (SPOILER ALERT) the whole Super-Baby subplot is bananas, but it’s actually a little bit bracing to see such a strenuously anti-canonical plot twist in a superhero movie. Especially when films like Iron Man 2 and Watchmen seem hermetically sealed in their attempts to stay “faithful,” it’s pretty darn cool that Singer just decided to really go for it. Superman and Lois Lane had sex! Without protection! And now he’s a deadbeat dad! And she still doesn’t know he’s Clark Kent. It’s like a Kevin Smith riff come to life.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Am I crazy to love Superman Returns just a little? Do you think Routh should get a second go-round with the last son of Krypton? Is John Williams’ Superman score better than his Star Wars score? Sound off below!

i actually liked Superman Returns. what i hated above all was Kate Bosworth- she was absolutely god-awful as Lois Lane. I thought Kevin Spacey though was excellent. And in the middle of the spectrum is Brandon Routh- who i think totally deserves another chance to play Clark/Superman. its a shame it probably wont happen. But Alcide from True Blood would be a great choice too!

    • Steven

Alcide in a Superman costume. I don’t mind that.

      • Superman

Superman Returns is a great movie. There’s just a lot of vocal haters who couldn’t get past the “dead beat dad” element (which is a superficial and incorrect observation) and the fact that he doesn’t throw a punch in the movie. It’s still a shame that Bryan Singer won’t get to do his follow-up.

      • pa

        TOM WELLING FOR SUPERMAN

      • BlackIrish4094

Oh yeah, anyone who disagrees with you is a “hater”. The movie sucked to most people, get over it.

      • Alexander Patrick

BlackIrish, I have to TOTALLY AGREE with you! It DID suck! I watched it 3 or 4 times and TRIED to like it, but it was NOTHING compared to Chris Reeve’s Superman and the STORYLINE of “Superman Returns” just plain STUNK!

    • Kristina

Yeah, Kate Bosworth took everything Lois Lane was, put it in a blender and tried to pass it off as solid food. Talk about a disappointment.

      • jmo

I really liked Routh as SM. I think taking the sequel in a new direction but with Routh would work. But yeah, Kate Bosworth was a snooze as Lois Lane.

      • Jesse White

I wouldn’t blame Bosworth for the poor portrayal of Lois. She was horribly miscast for a woman who should be in her 30′s, but it’s not her fault that Lois’ role in the script sucked.

    • laura

I agree with paige … Kate Bosworth ruin the movie ( as always ) .. I thought this new Superman was good .. Give the guy a chance without KATE!!

      • Renee

Smallville rocks use Welling and Erica Durance she makes a hell of a lois Lane !!!!!

    • Ceballos

Judging from a lot of these comments, it seems like Routh should send Bosworth a thank you note for being so bad in “Superman Returns” and making him look better.

      • BlackIrish4094

        Nice one Ceballos!

    • HC

yea Brandon Routh was great! The new Lois Lane should be Erica Durance! The perfect Lois Lane and I hate Smallville, but she is brilliant!

      • Julie

No, Rachel McAdams should play Lois.

      • tommy

he should return and do superman he did a wonderful job christopher who

    • darclyte

At the end of Superman 2, it was hinted at that Lois was pregnant. Superman Returns is supposed to be the sequel to Superman 2. So, if you follow that the second one is better but the third one is worse, then this could be considered # 4. If they do a full on reboot, they should get a new actor as Brandon was supposed to be Chris Reeve. A new actor can do it his own way. I didn’t mind the movie, the airplane scene is outstanding, and I actually really liked the suit. I hear they’re using the suit on Smallville. I’d like to see that suit, only with brighter reds (I loved the emblems throughout.)

      • Shelby Coman

The airplane scene was one of the things I hated… Lois Lane getting slammed into every single freakin’ wall and all it does is mess up her hair.

      • Jane

When was in Superman 2 is it hinted that Lois was pregnant? I don’t remember that at all, and I memorized the dialogue. And I don’t think that superman Returns can count as a sequel to 2, since so much of it was a scene for scene reshoot of the original Superman, complete with the same dialogue (see almost any scene where Spacey’s Luthor is talking to Kitty- the dialogue is the EXACT SAME DIALOGUE, save for a couple of changes). It is as if Singer couldn’t decide if he wanted to do a sequel or a his version Superman the Movie.

      • Brett

No, there were no hints that Lois was pregnant at the end of Superman II. And, if that were true, why would Superman inflict such potentially devastating psychological damage on Lois by impregnating her and then giving her the previously unrevealed “Kryptonian Memory Loss Kiss” so that she forgets their relationship and his identity, forcing her to deal with a pregnancy for which she cannot account in her own memory?

      • darclyte

At the end of Superman 2 Clark kisses Lois and wipes her memory of the recent events including that he’s Superman. She then announces that she wants burgers with pickles and everyone looks at her because it’s early in the morning. The odd thing then would be how did Lois know that Superman was the father of her son if his kissed made her forget that previous few days?

      • msd

        Maybe she went on Maury?

      • Lois’ Personal Trainer

darclyte – the whole morning cheeseburger was just a continuation of the running joke re: Lois’ unhealthy lifestyle. Earlier in S2 she’s seen squeezing oranges for juice while smoking. I think you’re the only one who’s ever interpreted that cheeseburger as the first sign of a pregnancy. Besides, if it were, how come she’s childless in S4 and S5? Supes may have banged her in S2 but he didn’t knock her up. Duh!

      • correction

Ok, to many peopole here are only getting half the point. Lets go through the list:
        1) Superman Returns IS THE SEQUEL TO SUPERMAN 2. Yes, there was a Superman 3, and 4…however the director of Superman Returns went on the record and told everyone that he Returns is filmed as a sequel based on the idea that Superman 3-4 never occured. You were correct on the point Darclyte.
        2) If the above mentioned is true, then it would be conceivable to interpret the whole cheeseburge thing at the end as a sign…good catch Darclyte. However, the timing doesnt match. Thats the onjly flaw in your theory. The end of Superman 2 is theoreticlly (though not specified) within days or so of them having sex. It would be too early for pregnancy symptoms to occur. And before someone mentions it, NO…there is no accelerated Kryptonian birth cycle crap. this is proven by the fact the kid is obviously normal untill later in his development.

      • marc wilson

Brandon Routh waqs great as Superman, following in Christopher Reeves foot steps is rediculously hard to do but I felt he looked, acted and very believiably was successful at playing the duel role of Clark Kent and Superman with a modern appeal and edge to him to boot. Love kate right but not as Lois Lane just not good fit, directing was decent, story line was bad. New Director, New Lois Lane, Keep Brandon Routh..with getter story and script directing and special F/X you’ve got a smash hit..espcially with some of the so so super hero movies being made like Conan (snore snore..lol) Captain America (wake me when its over pelase..) and the scrawny guy they got to play Thor with that tiny little hammer..(boring..sure Ill watch it but I won’t watch and rave about I’m sure) they should have gotten some rugged blonde dude off the street basically with about 30-50 lbs more bulk to him..instead Hollywood went all bubble gum on us consumers…:-(
makes ya wonder how people making decisions get employed to make such decisions..

all in all Brandon Routh gets my vote and I’m not even gay..lol

    • Kristin

I totally agree, Paige. Kate Bosworth should write the world a letter of apology for ruining Lois Lane. Routh wasn’t terrible, and Spacey was super (no pun intended) good.

      • Brett

Everyone faults Kate Bosworth’s performance. Kate Bosworth did a fine job with a bad script. Ditto for Kevin Spacey – the filmmakers made a serious misstep by trying to re-do Gene Hackman’s Luthor but without Hackman’s charisma and humor.

      • msd

Oh please. Kate Bosworth brought zero character or charisma to the role. They might as well have stuck a wig on a 2 by 4.

      • Katie

Totally agree. and it WAS a horrible script, but even so… if you’d have given Erica Durance that script it would have been ten times better already.

    • shellibelli

he is a beautiful guy and made a good superman but the movie sucked!

      • Rachel loves Superman

@Brett: Gene Hackman was a terrible casting choice for Lex Luthor. Its just, back then, he was probably one of the few legitimate actors they actually considered for the role.

Hackman = No charisma, no humor. Just an annoying, self-absorbed moron who seemed to yell at his servants a lot for screwing up the plans he should’ve done himself.

Spacey was better. Rosenbaum was better than both.

    • Angie

I like the actor who plays Alcide too, but noooooo! He’d be a horrible fit for this. Routh deserves a second shot.

    • jenny

I LOVED SUPERMAN RETURNS and totally think that Brandon routh should be in the new reboot — but chances are they will make a change, which is unfortunate. People want their superheroes to be darker, something superman never was.

      • Ryan

Superman returns was as dark as they get. They even took the red out and replaced it with maroon. Brandon Routh was a good Chris Reeve stand-in, but didn’t really sell it. Bosworth was horrendous. But Singer did not intend to make a Superman film, he wanted to make a Donner homage film with a guy posing as Superman in it. There was nothing original in the film and the plot made no sense when it was watchable…I fell asleep on my second attempt to watch it and I saw X-Men 6 times. The CGI was crap too. Right now, the best option is to use the main three from Smallville to cast their roles, Welling, Rosenbaum, and Durance. Leave the backstory out and just make an awesome film with no ties to any previous film or show. But you must not oversaturate the market which is why I suggest using Smallvilles actors.

    • Angmal

If they retain only one thing in the new movie it has to be John Williams’ themes. They are far from ‘jaunty,’ EW, they’re noble and heroic. Easily the greatest superhero score ever written, even over thirty years after it first appeared. Back on topic, I think Routh deserves another shot, but Nolan is quite contrary in that regard so you never know. Incidentally, you should make it clear that David Goyer came up with the idea for the new film and is writing it; Chris Nolan is producing only. His brother is not confirmed to be involved in any capacity yet beyond rumour. So credit where credit is due – it’s Goyer and Nolan’s Superman, not a Brothers Nolan enterprise. Yet.

    • Michelle

Good looking – no charisma. He sucked the life out of every scene he was in on Chuck. And Superman Returns was AWFUL. Superman’s son is such a dolt that he walks around with a trash can on his head and runs into things. AWFUL!!

    • LAJackie

I don’t know how she continues to be cast in anything.

    • Neil

Everyone seems to forget that Tom Welling has been wearing the mantle of Clark Kent/ Superman for 9 seasons on “Smallville” (soon to be 10)!! I think he’d make a great Superman for the next movie, with Erica Durance as Lois Lane!

      • Dinjab

        What’s Smallville?

      • MCS

Entourage quote? Season two when they are searching for the new house? Aquamansion episode maybe?

      • j49er

Man you don’t know Smallville??Your missing out!

      • RealityCheck

The “Superman”/Clark in Smallville is constantly getting his arse kicked, bleeding all over the place, and has lame arse season finale “climatic” (used in the loosest sense of the word) battles — in other words, Smallville’s “Superman” is a Grade A P*ssy. Give me a BadA$$ Superman, get rid the kryptonite every five feet, and give him a real bad mo-fo to fight (and done right — Nolan would represent Darkseid right; I’m sure Smallville will totally whussify the Darkseid character, like Doomsday and Zod).

      • DocTaboc

Ok Reality check. Being a big comic fan my whole life I never got the appeal of superman. He was just too over powering. Nothing could take him down. And your concept of the BadA$$ superman? When was that? A few comics he was like that but never on screen. When Smallville came out, it did have that Dawsons creek feel to it but the show now gave me a reason to like the Man of Steel.
I do love Spacey as Lex, But didn’t nail it. Routh had the look but didn’t either and Lois character was not deloped enough. I do think that was the problem with superman returns. No character delopment, they jumped right in with the WAY OVER THE TOP Superman saves. Just no way for the watcher to relate. Now Smallville… Welling is the best Clark, Not sure about the best Superman yet. Rosembaum kicks spaceys A$$ as Lex. Rosembaum makes you love to hate him. And Durance as Lois….Perfection.

      • gothicdragon

I totally agree!!!!!It would be great if they would cast the entire Smallville cast in the new movie!!!

    • julie

Agree! I liked Brandon Routh and the movie, it wasn’t too serious and it was a little different than other superhero movies. The original Superman wasn’t really action packed either right? Agree again on Kate Bosworth being miscast-just the worst! No personality at all.

    • Zak Thor

The true problem with the movie is that Bryan Singer “tried” to recreate Donner’s version of Superman…which is a classic in its own right, but not the version of Superman most people are now acquainted with. They should have made Spaceys portrayal of Luthor coincide with the more modern interpretation of the character(multi-billionaire business mogul), Rouths Superman portrayal should have been a bit less clumsy(I despised the scene where he blows out the fire and than waves…like a 4 year old kid), and get rid of Bosworth as Lois Lane(just plain terrible). If anyone has seen the trailer for the DC Online Universe game thats how a Superman movie should be made albeit a lot less dark.

    • Jeanie

I totally agree. Kate Bosworth was miscast, but Brandon was perfect.

    • jon

I didn’t. But Routh should get another chance.

    • Todd

I thought Superman Returns was a really good movie, not great but GOOD. Routh was very good as Superman. And frankly, I thought The Dark Knight was good but OVERRATED. Christian Bale who I normally think is awesome, totally ruined Batman for me with the over the top growling voice so let’s hope Nolan doesn’t screw up Superman this time.

    • Lonnie Damron

      I totally agree.

  • Michael Sacal

I’ve wondered if the Richard White character was Singer’s version of the modern-age Clark Kent as conceived by John Byrne in the Man of Steel mini series, and he was in the movie to have that version of Clark fight the Silver Age version of Clark as played by Reeve and Routh against each other for Lois’ affection.

    • Jane

Thank you. While I was watching it, I kept thinking, “Richard is like an awesome version of Clark. I anything, he’s the Superman. I mean, the guy flew into a storm to save his family and he’s giving Lois the freedom to choose who she wants to be with. Kal-El was so weird with his stalking and all.

  • Ceballos

You’re not the only one who loves “Superman Returns” a little.

I didn’t hate it when it came out, but I didn’t love it either. However, I’ve found that I enjoy it the more and more I watch it. Yes, Kate Bosworth was horribly miscast, and it was a bit weird that Kal Penn was in the movie, but had like two lines of dialogue. But I thought Routh was a REALLY good Superman, and the relatively relaxed retro-vibe was a nice change from the kitchen-sink approach of a lot of comic book movies.

Wait a minute…since when are the Nolans doing “Superman”?! (I definitely missed that bit of news.)

    • pdy

I believe it was after the phenomenal success of The Dark Knight and the implosion of the Justice League live-action movie (due to Christopher Nolan’s expressed concerns over Batman’s role in this film) that Warner Bros decided to turn over the development and conceptualization of the Superman re-boot to Mr. Nolan who will do this after finishing the third Batman movie. Hopefully, if the Superman reboot and new Green Lantern movie are successful, then the studio will greenlight the Justice League live-action movie.

  • Shannon S

I’ll be honest with you…I never understood all of the hating on this movie. Kevin Spacey was a great Lex Luthor, Brandon Routh was surprisingly effective, and overall it was a very well directed movie. I agree with all of the faults listed; but I thought they were minor compared to the overall film experience.

    • Adam Leonard Cable

I agree. Seemed t be popular to hate it. Though ask people why and they don’t have much to offer.

    • e4ia

The biggest problem with Superman Returns was Lex’s ridiculous evil plan. So let me get this straight… he is going to create shardy, pointy, rocky, ugly dark land in the middle of the ocean? Then, after flooding most of America and killing millions of people, we are just going to pay him billions of dollars for this “valuable real estate” instead of throwing him in prison? That was what I could not get past to enjoy the film. And I really wanted to.

      • Jane

That wasn’t the biggest problem of the movie, but it was a big problem. Luthor’s plan was actually brilliant- back when it was the plot of Superman the Movie. Remember how Lex wanted to use a nuke to drop California into the Pacific so that all of that desert real estate he bought in Las Vegas would be valuable? Same story, only on a bigger scale because of technological advances in special effects. Plus I didn’t think Spacey was great- he just seemed to be doing his version of Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor, only slightly less cartoony and slightly more dangerous.

      • e4ia

It’s true that they were very similar plans. But in Superman the Movie, Lex was going to secretly cause an event to create a disaster to make his land valuable. In Superman Returns, Lex wants to lay claim to his created land which means that he would have to admit to causing the deadly disaster in order to create the land that he says is his. Plus, the land was crappy shards of sharp rock insead of Nevada beach-front property. Yes, it is all silly, but I never questioned his plan in the first one but couldn’t get past it in the last one.

      • e4ia

…but I do admit that in the first one, the “going back in time” conclusion was a cop-out and didn’t make any sense (how come only Lois’s death was reversed but not Superman stopping the earthquake? Everything should have started over again.) It was really the only disappointing point in what I thought was otherwise a great movie.

      • emm2thaEff

In the quest to pay homage to Donner, they forgot to write a good story. Let’s face it – the original 1978 Superman was great, but Lex’s plan works better as a campy tribute to Golden and Silver age comic book plots, not as part of a movie set in 2006. We just don’t buy it today. We have all seen the major plot points before and it just wasn’t enough to get anybody really excited or interested. Now if you want to make the entire thing retro, like a period piece, that might work. But I really think they need to take a cue from Marvel – go back to the source. There are so many great Superman stories over the years – find a good one or a couple of good ones and adapt it. The best comic book adaptations work because they stay true to the source, not because some hollywood writer has a better idea. That’s why it looked like this movie could have been so much better, look what Singer did with the X-Men.

I also have lots of complaints with the casting, but Routh was very good and deserves another shot with a better script.

      • timocracy

In SR Lex shrugs off the threat of retaliation for the destruction of North America by stating that he will have advanced alien technology, i.e. the crystals, with which to defend himself.

    • Julian

I agree, except on Routh. I think he was the best part of the movie. The score was great too, btw. So yes, I’d love it if Routh stays as Superman in the next movie, he’s perfect.

  • BrandonK

I loved “Superman Returns”, despite the flaws. I was disappointed they didn’t make another one.

    • Sarah L.

“I loved “Superman Returns”, despite the flaws. I was disappointed they didn’t make another one”

I love SR too and really wanted to see a sequel with more action and a supervillain. It’s a big shame that WB listened to the very loud minority who didn’t like the movie. Everyone I know who saw it liked it a lot. And Brandon made such a great Superman and Clark. He was such inspired casting, but it looks like he won’t be brought back. That’s so unfair and sad. :(

      • Mikos

I’m in the loved it group. Mostly because of the huge set pieces with the plane and the mountain of kryptonite and Routh’s performance. True he did channel Reeve but there were also a few scenes where he conveyed just how separate Supes is from everyone else. Hell, I even liked Bosworth. True she didn’t explode with chutzpah but she was still a stubborn, “i’m getting the story even if i have to drag my kid onto some suspicious yacht” reporter.
I just wish Kal Penn had more than five words to say in the movie.

      • mikex

Totally agree. SR was supposed to be the first of three they had all signed for. Unfortunatly as as you said, they paid too much attention to a minority that to this day trounce this movie because it didn’t follow the typical superhero plot where you’ve got the good guy fighting the bad guy. Had the internet experts been ignored we would be talking about the third installment.

  • Lorie

I didn’t love “Superman Returns”, but I liked it, except for Kate Bosworth. That was a huge casting mistake.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Brandon Routh return as Superman. He def has the body and looks for this role.

  • Jose

I actually liked this movie too. Didn’t really understand the hate, well actually I did but I thought the film was a fun little ride that made up for all of the flaws in the movie.

I read somewhere that Jon Hamm was in a list of candidates to be the new Superman, that actually sounds intriguing.

    • CindyC

Jon Hamm is entirely too old. Routh or Welling. That’s it.

      • Jose

The movie is supposed to take place in the middle of Superman’s career. Plus Jon Hamm is 39 while Robert Downey Jr. is 45 so it seems fitting.

      • Brett

Hamm’s too old, and Welling would make a truly boring adult Clark/Superman.

      • Ferniesfreckles

Isn’t Clark Kent supposed to be boring and non-descript?
Tom Welling all the way for the new franchise!!!!

    • Sarah L.

Hamm? I don’t like him for Supes, he looks too old, boring and kinda creepy looking. Brandon Routh destroys him in every way, imo.

      • Pat Coleman

In one of my old Superman comics. There is an extra-feature that updates and explains the writers and editors character book for the Superman Mythology.

Superman is about 34 years old.

    • JB

I like the idea of an older Superman. He is the grand-daddy of all superheroes after all. I think Hamm could do something really great with the character. He’d look like the version Alex Ross paints.

Nolan might cast Hamm. It’s out of the box enough for him.

Having said that, Routh was still an excellent choice. I think he did more than just copying Reeve.

      • Jef-Ze

If you look further back in the cinematic history of Superman, George Reeves original first season portayal is the blueprint for a modern “darker” version. His is a much tougher, commanding version. Jon Hamm would be perfect in that mold. Makeup and CGI take care of any extra “age”

  • Damon

The movie was a complete bore..and what has brandon done since Superman..

    • Jim

He had a very minor, but funny, role in Zach and Miri. And he had a season-long guest spot on Chuck, in which he was awesome. I think he took a lot of the fallout for the failure of Superman Returns, but I think it just had a bad plot.

      • bobby

        agreed. the story was terrible.

      • Jane

He was awful in Chuck too. The only reason why he was good in Zach and Miri is because of the way people talked about his character in that film, not because of anything he did. His problem- he is utterly mediocre. He has no charisma, whatsover.

      • Amy

I liked him a lot in Chuck too. He’s a very good actor. He totally deserves to continue playing Kal-El. Come on WB, the guy deserves another chance!

    • Kristina

Uh, he had an amazing storyline on Chuck.

      • Amy

Agreed, especially when he turned bad. He made an awesome villain.

    • Tiffany

He was in Chuck recently. He also has several movies on the way, including Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. That said, I liked this movie too and would definitley see a 2 with him in it.

    • Jennifer

Clearly you weren’t watching the most recent season of Chuck in which he was the team’s boss for a few eps and was ultimately revealed to be working for the Ring, er bad guys, after his spy wife was killed.

Routh was a little wooden at first, but so was his character. He actually was a lot of fun as a bad guy and can act. I’d also say he deserves another shot at Superman.

Hopefully this time around, Superman gets some new bad guys. My problems with the movie were Supes having a kid – definitely against canon – and having Lex Luthor as a villain. Sure, Spacey was awesome, but Lex is still hung up on land, so what does he do but create the God ugliest land mass ever? Boring, and we’ve seen it before.

Darkseid, Doomsday, etc… there are other villains for Supes to fight.

    • lalala

He’s also in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World as one of the ex-boyfriends (I thought he was pretty funny in the trailer).

I would love to see Brandon Routh wear the red cape again. I thought he was perfectly cast as Clark Kent/Superman and played both well. I agree that I thought Kate Bosworth was miscast and I didn’t like the whole Superbaby subplot but overall, i thought this was a really good movie. I’ve never understood why this was viewed as a failure and needed to be rebooted again. Bring Back Brandon!

Brandon Routh needs to come back as Superman! Returns was a great reintroduction of the character and a reboot will be even better.

I abolutely loved Superman Returns. I get alot of flack for that primarily because alot of people complain it didnt have enough action sequences and Kate Botsworth was charisma free as Lois Lane. I agree with those critiques, however, the movie was still a well- directed, well acted “son of Joe-El” film with a great performance from Kevin Spacey as Luthor and a truly engaging storyline that humanized Superman while simultaneuosly portraying as a God-like savior figure. Also Brandon Routh definitely deserves another shot at playing Superman but please recast Kate and Lois and were in business lol.

  • Team Brandon

I loved the original and didn’t think that anyone could pull off the Superman persona more than Christopher Reeve but I was wrong. I liked this movie…Brandon was a great pick and his portrayal of our beloved superhero and its late actor was eerie and accurate. Kevin Spacy rocked as Lex Luthor but why this genius villain chooses to be with such dim-witted bimbos is beyond me. Anyway…I’d like to see Brandon return to the franchise.

@Team Brandon: I totally agree! Brandon was amazing as Supes! Bring him back please!

      • Long Live: Reeve – Routh

Brandon Routh IS The Man of Steel :-)

I honestly didn’t know much about all the hate against this movie until recently–I thought the film was great and I enjoyed it! Brandon Routh would be great as Superman again.

yeah, same here. Love the film and Brandon Routh ruled in the role. I’ll be very sad if they replace him. sigh

I actually really like this movie, I own in on DVD and pop it in for my kids all the time. I agree about Kate Bosworth, but loved the whole superbaby subplot and thought it would make a great jumping off point for a sequel. I really hope the Nolan bros don’t got the same route of Iron Man and all the other fan-boy favs of knock-em-out, shoot-em-up superhero movies. I personally loved the retro effect of Superman Returns.

The movie is not a bad one. I didn’t have a problem with Kate Bosworth. The thing I disliked the most was that whole superkid subplot.

would love to see routh back as superman thank god nolan wasnt around when reeve’s was playing superman or he would’ve butted him out as superman too. lame i hate when you have a sequel with different actors and actresses. the superkid subplot was different but interesting. now we will never know.
