It wasn’t a record…it was a Ricky Martin calendar! Hey, everyone! Guess who can’t get The B-52s’ “Rock Lobster” out of her head? I’m back from my relaxing vacation and ready to resume my role as PopWatch’s hardest-hitting newsmaker. Here’s a Ricky Martin Year 2000 calendar I stumbled upon last week among heaps of crappy records at a junk store in scenic Grand Beach, Ind. For more random memories of the year two-thousaaaaaand, revisit EW’s 2000 time capsule photo gallery. It’s a nude, sequined bodystocking, bitch.
What’s the weirdest hidden gem you’ve ever spotted in a record bin?

At Virgin record in Times square, I found a brand new, still in cellophane vinyl Bob Dylan greatest Hits vol one for $4.
Vinyl copy of the soundtrack for Paint Your Wagon in a thrift store in Philly.
Weirdest thing ever spotted in a record bin? Uh, records. Anyone born after 1980 would find those pretty weird.
Nice generalization there. My neighbor is 21 and collects classic rock records, so he knows exactly what a record is.
Ricky Martin from 2000?
Yes, please!
I passed Tim Curry at a restaurant on Melrose Ave around 2000, the first place I went to after was Bleecker Bob’s and in the first stack of records I went through I came across HIS record from the 1980′s. I was tempted to buy it and have him sign it but als my friend convinced me not to.Heck, I didn’t even know he had made a record.
He did! “I do The Rock”. When I first heard the song, I thought that he had released an album with the help of Brian Ferry and Roxy Music because it sounds like a Roxy Music tune.
It was 2000. We walked from our mid-town hotel to Times Square. On a side street approaching Broadway there was a construction site and sitting outside on a white metal folding chair was B. B. King. I complimented him on his soon to be opened blues club and he sat for a photo. We turned the corner on Broadway to go to Virgin Records and there was Eric Clapton heading towards Mr. King. He moved too quickly for a photo. We went into the store and found the 4 KISS solo albums. Bought them and was delighted to find that they each still held the interlocking poster sheets with art done by Peter Maxx.
On the back of that assembled poster was a map which led to the last Wherehouse Music store where we found passage to Robert Plant’s unicorn farm. Bestrode his Mare Prized Above All Others we were led to a forest glen hiding a pot of gold and a Cursed Monkey’s Paw. But it only had two wishes left, so that kinda bummed us out.
At a Goodwill in Eau Claire Wisconsin, I found a vinyl copy of Slippery When Wet signed by all five members of Bon Jovi. I paid the $15 gladly and took it home and framed it.
You overpaid.
A Spooky Tooth album entitled You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw.
I suppose it is not so wierd to find a vinyl record in a used vinyl record bin. Sure, we have an odd assortment of colored vinyl, imports, and funny 1950′s covers. But once my husband and I did find a rare Gigi Gryce jazz record, mint condition, sticker on it priced $2 and we had a coupon so we paid $1.50. It is worth over $750 – seriously, there is a VG copy of it on ebay right now for $450, and ours is in mint condition. Fantastic record.
