Julie Chen blogs 'Big Brother' week 4

Julie-ChenImage Credit: CBSI wanted to start out by saying a HUGE thank you to everyone for all the support this season.  We’re having a fantastic summer — great ratings, great drama and, as always, fantastic fan support.

And speaking of drama — just when you thought the “Summer of the Saboteur” was over, they pull you back in!

In case you missed last night’s show, I announced that we are asking you, the fans, to pick this season’s next Saboteur. One player who is already living inside the house will have the opportunity to accept the challenge of playing the second Saboteur.  If they survive for two weeks they win $20,000.

Who do you think would make for a good Saboteur?  First tell me your thoughts below, and then visit cbs.com and make it official by casting your vote for this summer’s next prankster or backstabber.  Next week we’ll tally your votes and see who you think will be best at disrupting the house.

Let’s discuss all the activity (or should I say campaigning) inside the house this week.  Matt snags HOH and immediately breaks rank and goes against the advice of the Brigade — instead of throwing grenades (as Enzo would say) at Brendon and Rachel, he opts to put Andrew and Kathy on the block.  I don’t understand the strategy of putting Andrew up, but in terms of his decision to nominate Kathy –  it was clearly a selection motivated by revenge. Kathy presents no real threat inside the house with regards to gameplay or challenges.  Therefore I understand the Brigade’s frustration with Matt’s strategy.  “Matt the Magnificent” stood by his nominations all week, but I personally think he showed a short-sighted approach and missed a huge opportunity to strengthen his alliance’s position in the house.   He could have broken up the Brendon and Rachel “showmance” once and for all, but instead wasted his shot on Andrew.  And to make matters worse for the Brigade, Rachel grabs HOH again this evening, securing her and Brendon’s safety for another week.

Kudos to Rachel and Brendon…especially Rachel.  She is one tough cookie when it comes to HOH comps.   That’s two HOH victories for Rachel and two POV victories for Brendon. I’d say that’s a team to be reckoned with, wouldn’t you?

Poor Andrew – I felt sorry for him this week when he started scrambling and grasping for any chance at survival.  The Big Brother house is like high school – the moment you show a hint of weakness or desperation you’re dead in the water. By week’s end, Andrew was a man with no country.  But if you know you’re on the outside, why not go out swinging, which is what he did.  That was one fantastic speech from Andrew during tonight’s show, but in the end it did not buy him one single vote.  Although you have to wonder what impact the information he revealed (confirming a second “showmance” between Kristen and Hayden) will have on the house moving forward.

Some Random Thoughts:

– I know I’m guilty of referring to this cast as possibly the smartest we’ve ever had, but after the illogical campaigning put forth by Brendon this week and Matt’s nominations, I would like to retract that statement.

– House meetings don’t work!  If you’re feeling threatened enough to call the meeting, its probably already too late. As was the case with Andrew — too little too late.

– I love how this season’s men are so in touch with their feelings!  For example… Brendon’s tearful moments from week one and then  this week’s emotional outbursts from Andrew.  Seeing this makes the Chenbot emotional…yes the Chenbot has feelings!

– My advice to Rachel: You don’t have to yell in the Diary Room.  Those are state-of-the-art microphones that can pick up your audio just fine.  (But isn’t she great television?)

– I don’t know when it will happen, but I get the sense that the Brigade could splinter at any time.  Maybe they’re stronger than I think, but it seems unlikely they’ll be able to maintain a united front throughout the entire summer — especially with the emergence of the second showmance.

Top Quotes This Week:

Lane regarding Ragan asking why he shaves his arms:
“Because that’s what men do. Men in Texas fight each other and shave their arms—it’s just what they do.”

Brendon on love and relationships:
“Why buy the milk when you can get the cow for free?”
Rachel “Am I a cow to you Brendon?”

That’s it for now.  It should be an interesting week for the Brigade given the power shift and the confirmation of Hayden and Kristin’s “showmance.”  I can’t wait to see how it plays out and who you think is sneaky enough to wear the title of Saboteur next week. Thanks everyone.

First – Kristen for Saboteur all the way

    • jen

Kristen is far too boring to be the saboteur.

      • Melissa

And she’ll probably be nominated and evicted this week.

      • maff

        Who’s Kristen?? I vote for Meow-Meow.

      • Nancy

She is way beyond boring. This is the first time I saw her.

    • Sandra S.

I’d vote for Kathy — she needs the money and has a much better shot at surviving the show for two more weeks than she does at winning the game (or even coming in second)!

      • Leslie

I vote for Kathy too! I think she has zero chance of winning the show, and that this is a much better strategy for her to get money to help her family.

      • Michelle

Kathy would be a great choice, but there’s one catch. The person who gets the most votes has to agree to be the saboteur, they can turn it down. I can’t see Kathy wanting it, in her eyes it would put too much of a target. But you never know, she could have more game than she’s letting on.

The season is so boring they have to bring back the saboteur? Kristen is definitely NOT who I would vote for…if I were voting. She says barely a complete sentence to anyone but Hayden the whole time they’ve been in there and all of a sudden this past week she’s picking fights with people. My opinion is to show her the rock that she came out from, so she remembers where she needs to be.
Rachel is too loud, as is Hayden in the DR. ME AND MY MAN?! Ugh, she really does make me want to scream!!

    • Ally

Vote Britney for Saboteur! She’s def got the personality to pull it off, and her diary room sessions are hilarious!

      • Nancy

        Completely agree 100%.

    • Big Dave

No, no, no. The saboteur needs to be someone with attitude who will give us bitchy Diary Room comments. That’s Britney (as much as I hate her) hands down.

  • Andrew

“My advice to Rachel: You don’t have to yell in the Diary Room.”

Thank you, Julie! I say that EVERY time a soundbite of hers is played! Can’t stand Rachel, but really like Brendon. Also, although he blew it this past week, still rooting for Matt. Thanks for a great blog, Julie! But first, can’t wait to see you on “The Talk”! =] Take care!

    • darclyte

Exec Producer said in an interview posted here yesterday that she’ll ask Hayden and Rachel to stop yelling in the DR.

    • Jennifer

Cant wait for The Talk. I think Julie was a great pick!

    • Emily

I love Brendon but i hate Rachels
voice. It annoys me.I want Hayden to go home because he wants Brendon out!So I say vote Hayden as the new sabbatour

  • JU

    Rachel is awesome! LOVE HER!

    • Caitie F

I would love her a lot more if she would stop saying “get between me and my man.” It is SMART for him to have other alliances

      • Kenny

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! I feel the exact same way. She thinks it’s always about that.

      • Ally

Or what about how she says “SERIOUSLY??” all the time..or “like, like like like” or “me and brendon” this, “me and brendon” that…we get it! you guys are in LOVE. awesome.

      • Jalal

I think it is so hilarious when Rachel says that in every goodbye message. She is annoying but makes great television!

    • jen

I am starting to like her more too, but can the first act of the next saboteur be to burn her trashy hair extensions please??

      • maff

Yes please, while she’s still attached to them.

  • darclyte

Thanks for the blog Julie! I think Matt’s HOH blog was one of the best ever, go read it if you haven’t. Matt probably has the best mindset to be the New Saboteur, but Brit might be ok, Lane is a prankster (although not too bright,) and Kristen is stealthy (as evidenced by her near total lack of airtime before last night.) Since Allison confirmed that the evicted HGs are in seclusion, was it a mistake to tell Andrew about how Matt’s wife doesn’t really have that illness?

  • Sami

Love how Rachel is going to go after Kristin. I can’t stand her!

    • phan based

Kristen seems like a little snot. I hope Rachel goes after her.

  • LAJackie

I felt terribly sorry for Andrew this week – he seemed like a nice guy but he had no clue how to really play the game, bless him.
Julie, I loved your little Professor Higgins section with Enzo – very funny!

  • Graham

Even though he had alienated himself from the rest of the house, the eviction of Andrew is one of the single dumbest moves I’ve seen houseguests make on Big Brother. Andrew would have remained an easy target had he stayed in the house and his presence could have bought Rachel, Brendon, Enzo, Hayden or Kristen another week in the house as the entire house would gun for him. But now, a member of the brigade is likely leaving next week, so shame on the house for thinking about individual game play. It will come back and bite the Brigade in the ass this week.

Kristen, who has largely been quiet this season, has shown herself to be a shrewd and sometimes vicious player. While the guys in the brigade seem like obvious targets for Rachel, I’d kick Kristen out of the house before she can make the jury.

And if we’re talking about Rachel yelling in the diary room, can we please tell Hayden to dial it down a bit? He is THE worst offender of DR Shouting this season.

Thanks again for the blog, Julie!

    • Matt

Nah. It’ll be Kristen, who’s not part of the “brigade.” She and Hayden will go up, and the other “brigadiers” will evict Kristen. Enzo, Lane and Matt vote Kristen, and Brendon probably would, too, since it seems she and Rachel aren’t besties. Then it doesn’t matter who Ragan, Kathy and Britney vote for. (Although the trick for the “brigade” might be coming up with the right reason to keep stronger Hayden over future target and non-threat Kristen without revealing an alliance.) Too bad Andrew didn’t know about that alliance. That would have been a good one to call out, and then everyone would be gunning for them.

  • JACK HART

Julie. love your blogs … I was so tickled after Andrew’s outburst. I can’t wait to see more of the Rachel/Kristen catfight.

  • BeBe

I think it is fantanstic that Andrew went out the way he did and exposed Hayden and Kristen! Amazing! This should break up the “Bridage” but you never know what Hayden might say to get out of the mess he put himself in…I love the drama!

  • BeBe

And Britney or Kathy for the Saboteur because nobody will think its either of them! I think Kathy needs the money more so she might do it….

  • Nenya

Great blog as always Julie. As a viewer I’m a bit confused how this new Saboteur will work. Are they out of the game after the two weeks? Or do they get to continue on if they complete their stint? That’s confusing a lot of voters and frankly, I don’t think any of them will accept at this point anyway for fear it will screw up their game. Also is Pandora’s box seperate from this task? Will someone be coming back? Obviously not Andrew since you outted Matt’s lie but what about Annie? I want to see Annie back!

  • BeBe

    Oops and i misspelled “fantastic”

  • Tom Brazelton

We need to vote for Brendan to be the next saboteur. The guilt would shred him to pieces!

  • SAL

Thank you Julie, for acknowledging that these people really aren’t as intelligent as they think they are, especially in playing this game.

  • courtneycullen

BRITTNEY FOR SABOTEUR all the way!
She’s already catty and talks about everyone, it’s a perfect job for her!

    • Ally

      YES!
