Image Credit: Ed KriegerNext weekend, the Hollywood Bowl will play host to the East Village, when a special production of Jonathan Larson’s musical Rent — directed by none other than Neil Patrick Harris — will go on for three performances starting Aug. 6. The first photos of rehearsals have been released and show Harris directing Vanessa Hudgens, who’s playing Mimi. (See an additional photo after the jump.) After seeing these, I can’t wait to see the actual production shots. Is anyone planning on catching the show?

I’m going to see it. But I’m wary. I’ve been a Renthead for a while and Vanessa and Nicole and Wayne and the other cast members make me nervous. Please don’t let them ruin this for me.
That being said, I’m curious to see how NPH is innovative with a show he’s already been in.
Who all is in it?? Not that it will affect me going at all…. I live in Texas. I caught the RENT tour when Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal were reprising their roles. It was awesome!!
I saw the show in Houston with Rapp and Pascal as well and it was AMAZING! It would be pretty awesome to see NPH’s version as well.
I saw that tour as well. I don’t think I can ever see it live again. It just won’t be the same!

Her being “skanky” should hold no weight over whether someone sees it or not. The fact that she sounds like a a baby dolphin gasping for breath when she sings might be a more persuasive argument. This roll calls for a big voice and she just doesn’t have the chops.
I’m pretty sure NPH had her audition to see if she had the vocal chops. He is not going to hire someone who he thinks is shit for his directorial debut.

I can’t figure out if the shallow end thing is a compliment or a insult, but I too adore and am waiting to see Aaron. By leaps and bounds the cast member I’m most looking forward to. Though Roger always was a little whiny for my taste…

I agree totally! Saw Skylar in spring awakening on broadway, he has one of the most beautiful voices i’ve ever heard! And I LOVE Aaron Tveit. Gwen Stewart kills it in her solo, saw her in the tour with Anthony and Adam.

I can see why he chose Vanessa. I saw an interview with NPH where he said it always bugs him when the actress playing Mimi is in her mid to late 20s. The song clearly states she’s 19, she should be played by someone young.

It is getting kind of old to hear people call Vanessa a skank because she sent her BOYFRIEND the same one she has had for FIVE YEARS some nudes of her and someone got hold of them and posted them it happened years ago get over it shes been with one man your definition of skankiness does not fit. I know many people in error who sent their boyfriends nudes to have it posted on the internet or polaroids pop up in embarassing places. She is just starting out let her have a chance to show what she can do. If you ever heard her sing Robbie Williams song Angel you would change your mind about her singing. She is meant more to sing ballads. Give the girl a chance she is there every day training and I don’t think that NPH would pick just anyone she is not even his type wrong gender so he is basing this on talent alone get a grip.

How is it conceivable that she’s a skank because she took naked pictures of herself and sent them to someone who she was in a serious relationship with? That was 3 years ago – get over it!!! If you’re name calling from a moral standpoint – you would do well to remember that the Bible says ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ Just sayin’. As for her talent – her cast members and NPH have already made several statements about what a great job she’s doing. She auditioned for this role and I’m sure many other talented girls did, too. Give her a shot – NPH wouldn’t have given her the part if he didn’t think she’d be able to pull it off. Stop being so judgmental and relax a little.
I knew immediately when I saw this pic that Vanessa would play Mimi….. I don’t know. I think she could pull it off. The only doubt I have is not for her ability to sing or dance. It’s her acting ability… Can she really pull of a junkie who’s dying of hiv? That’s what I’m fearful of….
