'30 Rock' live episode: Best idea yet?

30-Rock-Mom-MothersImage Credit: Ali Goldstein/NBCWith TCA, the networks’ annual press tour for the nation’s TV critics, in full swing, it’s officially time to start impatiently awaiting the return of our favorite shows. Today, NBC announced that Rob Lowe has been promoted to a regular on Parks and Recreation, which is great. But that’s eclipsed by the reveal that 30 Rock will do a live episode from Studio 8H on Oct. 14. (The cast will perform it twice, which makes me wish I was on the West Coast because you know late shows are always looser.) “I can’t imagine a series more suited to do an incredible live episode, thanks to its many cast, writers and producers, who hail from TV’s most renowned live series, SNL,” said Angela Bromstad, NBC’s primetime entertainment president. And that’s not spin. This really should be awesome.

I presume the episode will revolve around a live taping of TGS with Tracy Jordan, the show within the show. What do you need to see happen?

I guess it’s been long enough that everyone forgot how lame the live ER episode was.

    • Vivi

Wow,I watched some of the early seasons of ER, but I was really little, and I do not remember that ep. How in the world do you have a live episode of a hospital show, with all the makeup and special effects needed to act out, you know, emergency room emergencies?

    • Live Schmive

Don’t forget the live “Will & Grace” – big time lame-o!! All those Broadway actors also very well suited to a live TV event, right?

Mucho welcome, Chris. Brian has opeend an entirely new field in philosophy for us all. There are words of wisdom in many of the artists’ rendering of their truths. From song to prose to painting and photograph the truths ring out loud and clear. Music has long been my pensive troubador, underscoring many revelations with timeless wisdom. Like “What if G-d were one of us?” (Joan Osborne).

Alec Baldwin already had practice with the live Will & Grace episode, so I’m pumped for this. Should be interesting with a comedy that isn’t traditional four-cameras/studio audience though.

30 rock live will be badass! If anybody can do it and not be lame, it is them .

Tracy Morgan on live TV should be…interesting.

    • Ceballos

(Obviously, he did it for years in SNL…I’m thinking more in his Tracy Jordan persona and wondering how his co-stars will possibly keep straight faces due to the ridiculous things he says.)

Awesome Idea. Hope it goes well, maybe they’ll do it more often

WHO CARES? No one watches 30rock. Maybe they could boost their loooow ratings by moving it to Jersey!

    • JeffMc2000

And everyone watches Two And A Half Men. Your point?

      • Joenamherst

Two and a Half Men is much funnier then the pathetic 30rock. And the ratings prove it. For example…last week ‘Men’ was viewed by 7.7 million viwers…..’rock’ was viewed by a whopping 2.7 million viwers! If ‘rock’ were on any other network it would have been canceled years ago. NBC is usually the fourth ranked network. They’ll broadcast inferior shows because they can’t come up with good ones. If it wasn’t for a few reality shows NBC would probably fold!

      • Sarah

Puke! 2 1/2 Men is not funnier. It is one of the worst shows on TV. Oh, yes, Charlie is so hilarious as a forty something womanizing, sexist pig. Just in case you can’t tell, that is sarcasm. The only people who find Charlie funny are other forty something guys that are depressed with their own life. Then you have the pathetic brother that acts like he is a teenager. And then the son who farts and that’s the extent of his talent. It is a terrible show with the same jokes week after week. And just because the ratings are better then 30 Rock, doesn’t make it better. Just means that are a lot of stupid people like you out there.

        Both Of Those Shows Suck…Bad!BOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • DanOregon

An open-mic “incident” would be good. Profanity always works.

  • Victor Lazlo

    This is great.
What’s missing from TV is PERFORMANCE.
Love the energy of a live show.
    Can’t wait.

This is the only show I would be excited about a live episode. Judging from the live episode on the Season 2 DVD they’ll be pretty great.

Um, the live ER show was amazing. One of my favorite episodes. As one critic stated “Ambush”, the first episode of ER’s fourth season began amid much publicity and excitement. The premiere, though scripted, was filmed ‘live’ using two handheld cameras and broadcast simultaneously across America’s east coast. The episode was then rerecorded for the west coast. The effect of this new format was to capture an incredibly large audience, yet perhaps a more interesting effect was the blurring of the borders between fiction and reality on television. Indeed this episode superimposed documentary techniques onto a fictional genre, causing a lack of distinction. It is interesting to examine “Ambush” in terms of style, narrative and voice to determine the effects of the new format.

This 30 rock episode should be AWESOME!
