Giddyup! Sam Raimi to take on the legend of Wyatt Earp.

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Ortega/PR Photos; Everett CollectionSam Raimi will put some sci-fi into the spurs of Old West hero Wyatt Earp in his adaptation of the graphic novel Earp: Saints for Sinners. The story imagines Earp battling villains and outlaws in a futuristic Las Vegas. (Those looking to brush up on their Earp lore in anticipation of the movie can choose from the more staid Kevin Costner version or the more zippy Tombstone, which features a bravura performance by Val Kilmer as TB-ridden Doc Holliday.) Of course, this is not all Raimi has on his plate — the director will next helm the unequivocally cool-sounding Oz, the Great and the Powerful, an apparent prequel to The Wizard of Oz, for Disney. (I love this man! And if you haven’t yet seen the ridiculously fun Drag Me to Hell, remedy this wrong and rent that sucker pronto.)

Does the combination of Raimi, sci-fi, and Wyatt Earp do your soul good? Will there be horses in Las Vegas’ future? Who could fill our titular hero’s well-worn boots? Kilmer or Dennis Quaid as the Doc? I’ve already cast my vote and submit my defense here:

The other sci-fi western being made, Cowboys & Aliens, sounds more interesting to me (as I believe it’s set in the Old West and not the future), but this sounds fun too, especially with Raimi at the helm.

FIRST! Tombstone will always be my favorite. I can’t see anyone else but Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer in those roles. :)

      crap… not first… :(

Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday is what made me have a ridiculous crush on him.

    • Ayn

He really was fantastic as Doc Holliday wasn’t he?

  • Nerdo

Shoot, sounds like Raimi should be doing Stephen King’s The Dark Tower saga instead of Opie.

Good call on the film clips. So many excellent scenes to choose from. Val Kilmer was robbed of acting awards that year.

I’m sorry, but doing a futuristic take on a real person sounds like a dumb idea to me. He’s not a fictional character, he was real.

My vote is for Bruce Campbell. He’s experienced in the sci-fi/western genre from his show “Brisco County Jr.”

Come on Raimi team up with Bruce on this one.

You know Bruce will be in there somewhere, at the very least!

Awesome news. I loved “Quick and the Dead” so I’m hoping he can mesh the sci-fi and western well.

Didn’t Raimi do the Quick and the Dead? I’ve never seen the whole thing but my boyfriend brings that movie up all the time.

Kilmer will forever have a pass in my book for whatever role he wants to do just because of the job he did in Tombstone.

Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang was pretty awesome too.

Kurt Russel IS Wyatt Earp. Period.

    • Ayn

      Agreed.

Bruce Campbell should be Earp. That’s the only way to get my butt in the seat to see it. How epic would that be?!

  • Brenda

Great movie but Tallfriendfinder was better

Val has to be Doc Holiday. There is no one else who could play it so convincingly! He’ll get my vote every time!

  • Kim

There is only one man to play Doc and that is Val Kilmer. He brought Doc Holliday to life and coined so many quotes that we still favor today. “I’m Your Huckleberry”
