And by now, we hope you’ve had time to do the following: Read the full list of major nominees, peruse our critic Ken Tucker’s take on the honorees, check out Michael Ausiello’s snappy judgments, and post your picks for most egregious 2010 Emmy snubs. EW’s Lynette Rice has pulled together interviews with Men of a Certain Age‘s fantastic Andre Braugher, the co-creators of 14-time nominee Modern Family, and the folks behind 12-time nominee Lost. Ausiello’s got dish from Friday Night Lights‘ Connie Britton and The Good Wife‘s Julianna Marguiles. And here at PopWatch, we’ve got a chat with Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston. But if that’s not enough for ya, I’ve cobbled together some interesting facts and figures about Emmy’s class of 2010. Read on…
* Newcomers ruled, while nostalgia was kept to a minimum: Of the 48 nominees across the eight major acting categories, 14 were from freshman series, while only four* were from shows that have been canceled or finished production. (*Seven if you count the three nods for Damages, which has yet to be renewed for a fourth season by FX.)
* Also worth noting about those 48 acting nominees, fewer than half of those folks (23 to be exact) were Emmy nominees in 2009. Of those 23, two of ‘em — Amy Poehler and Elisabeth Moss — were nominated for different shows and/or in different categories. (For the record, Moss was a Best Actress contender for Mad Men in ’09; this year she’s in the Supporting Actress race. Poehler, meanwhile, was up for Best Supporting Actress for Saturday Night Live in ’09; this year she’s in the Best Actress division for Parks & Recreation.)
* Adding to Emmy’s sudden adoration of the super-fresh, three pilots were nominated in writing categories: Glee, Modern Family, and The Good Wife.
* Adding to the “out with the old” theme, one-time Emmy darlings 24, Law & Order, and Ugly Betty were shut out of the series races for their final seasons.
* Folks won’t be able to kvetch this time around that Emmy rewards the same folks year after year after year. Among the notable streaks broken this year were Sandra Oh, who’d been nominated for five consecutive seasons before her shutout today, as well as her Grey’s Anatomy costar Chandra Wilson and Two and a Half Men‘s Charlie Sheen, who’d each been nominated respectively for the last four years. Hitting the brakes today after three straight years of nominations: Brother & Sisters‘ Sally Field, Ugly Betty‘s Vanessa Williams, Weeds‘ Elizabeth Perkins and Mary-Louise Parker, The Office‘s Rainn Wilson, and Entourage‘s Kevin Dillon.
* Speaking of Oh and Wilson, their series, Grey’s Anatomy, received only two nominations — for Outstanding Makeup and Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup — the first time the medical drama has been shut out of the major categories in its six-season history.
* ABC couldn’t shed too many tears over the fading Emmy fortunes for Grey’s and former awards darling Desperate Housewives (one nomination, for guest actress Kathryn Joosten). Five out of six adult cast members of its freshman hit Modern Family– Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Ty Burrell — heard their names called this morning.
* Modern Family‘s lone snubee, Ed O’Neill, was in good company alongside his former TV bride Katey Sagal, who was jilted in the drama category despite having been considered a strong contender for her work on Sons of Anarchy. We’d suspect a Married With Children curse if Christina Applegate hadn’t been nominated in 2008 and 2009 for her work on Samantha Who?. Whatever the reason, we do not approve!
* Emmy continues to disrespect Courteney Cox. The only Friend never nominated for an Emmy was considered a good prospect this year for her freshman hit Cougar Town, but will apparently have to wait till 2011 to hear her name preceded by the phrase “and the nominees are…”
* Edie Falco has now been nominated for both Best Drama (Sopranos) and Best Comedy (Nurse Jackie) Actress.
* Straight men out? Four of the six nominees in the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy bracket are either openly gay or play gay characters.
* Despite launching its first-ever Emmy campaign, The CW didn’t receive a single Emmy nomination today.
* Not only is Jane Lynch considered a mortal lock for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her work on Glee, she’s also up for a statuette in the Guest Actress race for her part in Two and a Half Men.
* With her Guest Actress nod this year, Elizabeth Mitchell becomes the first (and only) female cast member from Lost to get some Emmy love.
* Edu-tainment is all right with Emmy: Four of the six nominees for Outstanding Reality Show — Antiques Roadshow, Dirty Jobs, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, and Mythbusters – are heavy on information. If you really want to stretch, Undercover Boss could qualify under that heading, too. But unless you want to learn how to live life on the celebrity outskirts, we can’t make it a clean sweep and include Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.

Thanks for sharing, Slezak! I’m so satisfied with all your info’s.
I’m with Coco!
“ABC couldn’t shed too many tears” Writes Slezak. Then he goes on to talk about how Modern Family saved ABC. Uhh, what about LOST?? 12 Nominations dude. If you forgot that’s acceptable but you should mention that.
LOST RULES ALL!!!
LOST does rule all. Nothing else will ever compare, as far as I’m concerned.
Lost is awesome, and a side note that wasn’t pointed out:Michael Emerson continues his nomination streak, meaning there has only been 8 Lost episodes which he has appeared in which have not been part of an Emmy nominated/winning performance.
“Lost” is also over and won’t be eligible for the Emmys next year. “Grey’s” and “Housewives” will.
and your point is AK…..
We are talking about the 2010 Emmys not the future Emmys here.
very interesting. still annoyed by both chandra and sandra getting snubbed. above everything else grey’s had a shot at and deserved (best guest actor for the shooter, ellen pompeo, best writing in an episode for the finale, best directing in an episode for the finale, etc) i wanted and EXPECTED these two amazing actresses to be there as usual. truly shocked and disappointed. while they’re good and pleasant surprises, i don’t think christine and archie from TGW deserved noms over some other names just yet.
Yeah, Grey’s sucked this season (or at least I quit watching it), but I would have handed the award to Chandra – *another* award, because by now I’d have given her two *already* plus two for Sandra Oh (screw Blythe Danner) and one for Katherine Heigl.
On the plus side, Katherine Heigl didn’t get a nom either.
Archie panjabi deserved her nomination for the good wife and i’m so happy that she did. Baranski’s nod is more so because she is a recognizable name. But certainly Chandra wilson deserved a nomination and I was expecting a win after her powerful performance in the finale — that would have won it for her. Grey’s was not great all year until the finale.
The Emmy’s still have some of that old “oh they’re supposed to be good, lets nominate them” thing going on…The Office was nowhere near as funny as Parks and Rec, Community or Cougar Town. Also, a nice big Seth Meyers “REALLY” to Kristin Wiig taking Busy Phillips’ nomination. Last but certainly not least, why on earth did the worst season of Idol ever get a nomination, while the INCREDIBLE 20th season of Survivor got nothing. Watch the shows voters, the quality of a season like Survivor had deserves not only a nomination but a win
Exactly. It’s like they treat the Reality Competition category like “Most Elaborate Production” instead of “Best Show.”
TOTALLY AGREE. Idol was embarrassingly bad this season. Idiotic judges, a host having a breakdown and sub-par contestants. Not to mention terrible production values. SURVIVOR was amazing this season. Should’ve been on the list. But, it won’t really matter since these voters will give the Emmy to the Amazing Race again.
I’m right there with you. The biggest shock I had looking at the list of nominees was seeing Survivor left out. The inclusion of American Idol turned a big disappointment into a harsh slap in the face.
This is one of the biggest snubs for me, along with Cat Deeley not getting any love for hosting So You Think you Can Dance. What kind of medicine are these voters on and do they need a refill?
I’m pretty content with the nominations. (Shout out to “Lost” & “Modern Family”. Only gripe is the snubs of Ed O’Neil and most definitely, Cat Deely.
No nom for Chandra’s work in the finale! Unreal! So unfair to such a fine actress.
Viewing one episode does not make one eligible to be nominated for an emmy. It is the full season of work, and being bossy, snooty, loud, obnoxious, rude, disrespectful, arrogant, insecure, thinking she knows it all, doesn’t automatically qualify Chandra for a nomination. The emmy voters finally got it right!!
AHHHH Elizabeth Mitchell FINALLY! She is perhaps one of the most underrated actresses around and I am so happy she got the nod and hope she will get the award, too.
Yep, I’m rooting for her and Jim Parsons and NPH!! Let’s go Emmys get this thing right.
Emmy voters punished “Grey’s” for Kat Heigel’s so called ‘disrespect’.
I think the Emmy voters are over Grey’s Anatomy. It has become overly melodramatic and unrealistic over the past two seasons. It used to grip me but I took it off my DVR at the beginning of this season.
Cat Deeley and Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains were cheated!!!
+1. (+Chandra Wilson, Michelle Forbes, and America Ferrerra (but at least that one was a competitive category))
CW only campaigned for the first time this year? I remember there being buzz about Jensen Ackles making it a couple ballot rounds back in season 3 from Dream a Little Dream of Me. Not at all surprised the campaign didn’t work…just surprised they hadn’t tried it before.
That’s what I was thinking. If CW ever had a chance that was it.
I’m sorry but I wanted Rainn Wilson to be nominated AGAIN. And I wanted him to win. He is brilliant as Dwight.
He used to be. Now they are all just going through the motions. Dwight and the rest of the characters are dreadfully annoying now, especially Michael who gets dumber each year.
Agreed…Steve Carrell knows it’s time to go. Hopefully NBC will realize it as well and end the show with dignity when Steve leaves. There is no replacing Michael Scott.
Like Edie Falco, Christine Baranski has now been nominated for both Best Drama (The Good Wife)and Best Comedy(Cybil) but in the supporting, not leading, category.
And, Legacy STILL rules!
Emmy Nominated Choreography – Stacey Tookey “FEAR”.
What is the deal with Courtney Cox? I loved her on Friends and I thoroughly enjoy Cougar Town. Why does she get passed over time and again? Seems odd to me. I don’t get the sense that she’s a diva or a witch to work with. What’s their problem?
The best category by far is the Best Female Guest on a Comedy. All of the nominees are outstanding! Safe bet that La Betty will get it for hosting SNL but all of them are deserving. Nice to see at least one category that didn’t have a WTF nominee.
Why is Kathryn Joosten [D/H] still in this category after 6 complete seasons?
She is a supp actress if I had my way!!!
Is Julianna Margulies a lock to win? Seems like it…and I sure hope so!
It’s not a popularity contest with the emmys in as much as there is actually a committee that watches the performances they submit — if they submit the wrong episode, then someone else, that someone else will win.
Get real Steve…it’s absolutely a popularity contest voted on by TV insiders.
Sal the fact that a dumbing show such as Glee got any nomination pretty much means the Emmy has been turned into a popularity contest.
I remember the days where good shows and actors who could actually act got nominations and won!
