How Julianne Moore got her '30 Rock' Boston accent

Turns out it wasn’t that fake! “I worked in a bar called the Up and Up Lounge in Kenmore Square on top of a Howard Johnson’s and that’s how I learned to talk like that. Everyone was from Dorchester or Somerville,” Julianne Moore a.k.a. 30 Rock‘s Nancy Donovan told Jon Stewart. Ha! I love it. This is even better than if Julianne Moore had worked at the Ground Round in Cleveland Circle!

Moore was on last night’s Daily Show to promote her new movie about stylish lesbian parents, The Kids Are All Right. (EW gives it an A.) As a side note, I can’t stop staring at her purple people-eater arms and reminiscing about when mean old Marilla finally let Anne of Green Gables wear a dress with puffed sleeves. This one is way better than that one. (Blasphemy?!) The video’s after the jump, so go pahhhk yoh cahhhh ovah thayuh.

Moore also begged LeBron James to come to New York with a bit more sexual passion than Betty White and the Hot in Cleveland ladies did in this video. Who makes a better case? Julianne REALLY WANTS HIM. It’s a tough call.

I do love Julianne Moore, but Nancy wasn’t a great character. Not as bad as Elisa (Salma Hayak, another actress I love), but still.

    • Madd

Is is Hayak or Hayek? I can never remember.

      • Ceballos

It’s Hayek…and I actually liked her more than I liked Moore on “30 Rock”, which is a shocker since Moore is one of my favorites.

Still: “Don’t you have a slanket to fill your farts with?” > Nahhnncy Doohhnovan.

(Still, Edie Falco remains my favorite of Jack’s love interests.)

Edie Falco was fantastic on 30 Rock, but Dick Cheney is probably my favorite Jackie D love interest.

      • Madd

Edie Falco was my favorite too. I do like Elizabeth Banks though.

I actually liked Elisa/Salma Hayek BEST of ALL his girlfriends…I think I would have liked Nancy’s character more if they’d left it hanging and not done that last disjointed episode – or just handled it differently. I didn’t want her to compete with anyone.

I’ve liked all of Jack’s interests, but I prefer those who’ve been suggested more than portrayed i.e. Condeleeza.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Nancy either, although I usually like Julianne Moore. Side note: Julianne’s got nothing on Anne’s puffed sleeves. And I heart Marilla.

    Ugh!
This unfunny show is still on the air?

    • Katja

Do you mean the Daily Show, or 30 Rock? Just curious, though I guess it doesn’t really matter because I like them both so I’ll never understand anyway. :)

      • Cerebus

        Both, now that you asked.

  • Steven

I love Julianne Moore AND Anne of Green Gables, but I think the most exciting part of this article is that it mentions, Somerville, where I live. Work!!!

    • Kate

Former Somervillian/current Bostonian here! Yeah, Davis! :-)

      • Steven

Sweet! Yeah, Davis is right! Holla!

    • Shiny

The sleeves are the puffiest. Thank you, Matthew.

      • Jane

        Ha!

  • Brian

Sad news for Julianne… the Howard Johnson in Kenmore Square was converted to a dormitory for Boston U.

  • eli44

I couldn’t watch this season of my beloved 30 Rock because I couldn’t stand Moore’s accent. I don’t care if it was “real”, it was disconcerting and annoying.

  • Carrie

The accent was so over the top that I actually loved it. It made her difference from Jack so much more obvious.

Ground Round closed like 5 years ago. It is an applebees now.

    • Jackie

No more Circle Cinema either :(

  • Funback Joe

Annie, I hate to break this piece of news to you, but Ground Round in Cleveland Circle is no more. Circle Cinema is gone too!

  • Sara

    puffed….sleeves….*swoon*!

  • Louise

    “Marilla, look at the puffs!”

  • BC Alum

I remember the Ground Round at Cleveland Circle!!!

  • E

Well, if it can be believed. I *just* picked up Anne of Green Gables from my library and began reading it, never having read it. Amazing that I can read a spoiler about Anne’s sleeves on EW.com. hahahaha. Am relived that Anne finally does get the puffed sleeves though.

  • Abby

I live just up from Cleveland Circle, and there is no Ground Round there. But I appreciate the effort. And I think that her Boston accent is a little too cartoony.

  • Daniel F

I too live just up from Cleveland Circle. Yeah, it’s an Applebees now.
But the bigger injustice is that the lights are still on inside Circle Cinema — which has been closed for two years now! Someone might want to check the projectors…

  • FLD

I usually like Julianne Moore a lot but her Boston accent was so bad I couldn’t believe they let her go on with it.

And when did the Circle Cinema close? Used to live right there before the big move to the burbs.
