Jake vs. Vienna 'Bachelorette' showdown: First video clip doesn't immediately activate my B.S.-meter

What is wrong with me? ABC just leaked the first clip from Chris Harrison’s much-hyped Monday night interview with feuding Bachelor exes Vienna Girardi and Jake Pavelka (embedded below), and the following things happened:

1) I watched with rapt attention, processing the footage as if these were real people with actual feelings.

2) Vienna’s defense for barking to the tabloids did not immediately activate my B.S. meter. “I know Jake and I knew as soon as we broke up he was gonna run to a media outlet and tell his side of the story. I wanted to make sure I had a voice also,” she said. “You know, I haven’t had a voice this entire time. And I’ve let everybody say what they wanted to say about me, and their thoughts about me, and I wasn’t gonna let it happen again.” Hey, I can’t argue with her on that count, seeing how Jakey Pooh did wind up on the cover of EW’s corporate cousin People the same week as Vienna’s Star magazine cover. And, of course, if Vienna and Jake’s reality TV relationship didn’t go down in a blaze of public glory, how would they ever really know if they’d broken up at all?

3) The B.S. meter did ping a little when Vienna said “I want people to know that I did try in this relationship. And I stayed with him because I thought it would be different. And I loved him and I wanted it to be different.” My inner cynic wonders if by “I stayed with him because I thought it would be different,” she means “I stayed with him because I thought I’d already have a deal for some kind of TV gig by now.” Maybe that’ll be Chris Harrison’s followup question?

4) Oh, and hey, speaking of B.S., remember back in March when Jake told my colleague Mandi Bierly that when it came to his Dancing With the Stars gig, “the cameras are not what I’m after, it’s the competition,” and how he planned to return to life as a commercial pilot in Texas when his DWTS gig was over? I wonder if he’ll be back in the cockpit by the time his upcoming guest role on Drop Dead Diva airs, or if the siren call of Hollywood got to be too much for him.

5) In other news, Jake’s rapid blinking and straight-line of a stoic mouth made me a little giddy. Like Sue Sylvester in Glee, I wonder if he’s feeling “aroused…then furious!”

6) I made a note to myself to cancel any Monday night plans. This Vienna-Jake situation needs to be watched liiive!

Anyone else excited about watching Chris Harrison’s Jake-Vienna summit in the midst of Monday’s regularly scheduled Bachelorette? And how does the first leaked clip make you feel? Sounds off in the comments below!

cancel the show please! with a 1 in 14 success rate – why bother to air this scrap.

    • Minutiae

Because people still watch it. It’s all about the $$$.

      • Matt

This was planned by the producers to have a public and messy breakup. Ratings gold Jerry!

    • LOL

No one cares about this crap.

      • Angie

You obviously care enough to comment. If you were that dis-interested, you wouldn’t have wasted your time reading this link.

      • Ya Know It

        Amen, Angie.

    • sashay

Because it’s goofy and really, really funny if you don’t take it seriously. I used to wonder how anyone would watch this show when the premise is so ridiculous…but then I watched the Jillian season and was hooked! It’s hilarious! You could have a drinking game based on how many times the Bachelor/Bachelorette says “this place is incredible! (amazing sometimes substituted). And how this week’s episode will be The MOST SHOCKING EPISODE EVER!

      • KC

You must not have watched very much if you don’t realize Amazing is not substituted but is said at least 100x per epidode! :)

      • stace

How about a drinking game based on how many times they say “journey”. Sashy is so right…it’s hilarious!

      • Deb

Or how about taking a shot every time one of the girls runs into the bachelors arms and swings herself around… too funny!

      • KC

or “here for the right reasons”

    • Sally in Chicago

Slezak you kid, right? You actually believe this is real? You’re feeding the B.S. meter….these two are actors, F-list actors who are putting on a show for the world in hopes of cashing in….i can’t believe anybody believes this B.S.

  • Madd

Jake was on the cover of People, and Vienna was on…Star, I think? I just remember looking at the two covers and thinking “Well…he kind of “won”, huh?”

    • Ceballos

To quote the tagline for the cinematic masterpice, “Alien vs. Predator”: Whoever wins…we lose.

      • Woot

HAHA cinematic masterpiece. Love the sarcasm.

      • Red

HAHAHA!!! Love it, couldn’t have said it any better myself. Maybe ABC can use as their promo???

    • Dil

How is it that he won, exactly? Are you suggesting that People is any different than Star

      • Joannie

People have a better reputation then Star. Star kind of gets thrown in with all those Us Weekly tabloids. People is considered a more reliable source of information cause the stories are usually true and real celebrities usually flock to People to tell their stories over Us Weekly which usually houses reality rejects.

      • Kris

People does have a better reputation for truthfulness than the tabloids, but it’s also known for running stories that go very easy on the celebrities – publicists love to have clients tell “their side of the story” in People to gain sympathy. In return, People gets greater access to the biggest names.

      • Deborah

People mag used to be a top notch magazine-But I believe more stories in Star now-If you follow them to the end-you realize that Star has more of their facts correct-

    • hamster

And if you add in the line “I want to be sure that (fill in the name) is here for the right reason”, you could pretty well be on the floor by the end of the show.

  • Natalie

Jake is a ridiculous human being. For all the “Vienna wants to be famous” comments that were thrown around during their season, she has stayed out of the spotlight while he’s headed for his 4th reality show. He said a million times that his fiancee would have to move to Dallas where he worked on a pilot, and sold Vienna a load of b.s. He followed through with none of that, stayed in LA, and focused totally on his career while expecting her to be Stepford supportive. I hope he enjoys his last gasps in the limelight, because he has obliterated the fan base he made during Jill’s season. For further proof of his ridiculousness, see his people.com explanation for the break-up (e.g., “I couldn’t get into character for Drop-Dead Diva until I ended the relationship [over the phone]…they hired me to be Toby Davlin, not Jake.” Just go away, Jake.

    • Me1967

Every single bachelor becomes a quasi celebrity for a brief amount of time and after all this time, none of the women get that … it’s the same reason Helene broke up with Aaron, Shayne claims she broke up with Matt, Jen said it about Andrew and so on and so forth. Jake is a half way decent looking, not the ugliest guy on the block commercial airline pilot. Jason is a short single father insurance selling living with his brother a** pie face looking like a Jonas brother reject.. In the real world, please tell me where Jake and Jason would be considered a catch?

      • carol

Um, maybe your better do your research here little girl. jason is not living with his brother, is not short (taller than Jake for sure) and oh, hm, not selling insurance either. You just sound plain ignorant now, don’t you.

      • sashay

Las Vegas! Ooops did you say “real?” Never mind.

      • Dil

hahahahhahahaha! Carol, are you Jason’s best friend or something? How could you possibly be so bothered by someone not knowing Jason’s real profession. hahahaha. the comments on ew are so much more fun than the stories. oh, carol. (sigh)

      • Me1967

Molly, I mean Carol as a matter of fact on Deanna’s season he was selling insurance, living with his brother in addition to being short and pie face and looking like a lost Jonas brother not that any of it matters although at no time did you say what he did where he lived or call him a catch. Your Honor, the defense rests

      • What????

Huh? At least Jason married Molly!

    • OMGq

I agree – I am no fan of Vienna but I think in the clip above she is 1,000,000,000,000,000% correct. Jake had probably contacted People magazine and posed for the cover shot before he even called her and left her the message that it was over (if that’s how it really went down). He’s just as janky as she is and so far as I can tell they deserve each other. ABC should force them to live together in a locked room and they should tape it and show it Monday’s at 11:30pm – now that’s a REALITY show I’d watch.

      • f11

OMGq…I co-sign everything you wrote. Too true.

    • stace

      Couldn’t agree more.

  • natasha

I couldhv’e put money on that one!

  • Autumn

This entire debacle is as dumb as that slogan “I’ll guard and protect your heart.” These shows attract losers. They might be handsome and pretty losers, but bozos nonetheless. There is something very wrong with Jake. I think he’s just too fool of himself or something and I believe that Vienna got caught up in something that she now realizes was wrong for her. I believe her and Jake is a douche.

    • Deborah

I agree with you regarding there must be something wrong with Jake-In the interview he is full of hate which could lend itself to physical abuse at some time-I think he is capable of it actually-He is so controlling and was with Chelsea Hightower in the DWTS rehersals-He is just mad he did not make it to the tabloids first to tell his story and angry Vienna beat him to the finish line and angry that the the real truth about his nasty little real rotten personality is coming out….Good for her if she made some money out of the deal-Tha tis allhe was in this reality program for-so why can’t she benefit as well

    • Dimiteera

I completely agree that Jake is not put together right.

  • Broadway Baby

God help me, I can’t stop watching.

    • Big Dave

      I love your honesty.

    • KC

LOL Jake didn’t say a word but somehow was the best part of the clip. I’ll be watching too, God help me. :)

  • Sally in Chicago

Oh my goodness, that poor Vienna. I think she deserves someone way better than Jake. He’s just so gross.

    • Cal

      Are you kidding?!?!?

  • Zo

I kinda DO want to watch this… except…. ABC is in NO WAY going to let Jake appear to be the bad guy. He is their little golden god, and they’ll edit all the stuff out that makes him look like a jacka$$.

So, basically, Jake will be edited out of the segment entirely.

    • Ronnie

I agree and have been saying this for so long, Zo! If he looks bad then ABC looks bad for propping him up for so long. And I do believe he made a fist at her (whether he actually intended to hit her or not), but ABC will NEVER air that.

  • texasgal

LOL … Vienna “sausage girl” got just what she deserves. All she talked about was wanting the fantasy. Well wake up, life is no fantasy. Jake is getting what he deserves too. Everyone knows why he picked Vienna over Tenley. You reap what you sow …..

    • SLB

Vienna will never be a star.

  • Alisha

Yeah, I think Vienna deseerves someone better.

  • Jackie in Texas

I wish it hadn’t turned out this way because I was rooting for Vienna to be picked all along. I had no idea how “Fake” Jake really was. I hope he gets black-balled from the entertainment community!

  • Sasha

If I was a pilot and worked hard to become that and continue doing that, I wouldn’t want to be an actor. Unless of course I was auditioning to be sky king. His proposal to her in the finale looked like he was auditioning for another role. I call him “Jake the ripper”

  • TRISHA

She was a bimbo from the start. Every woman there tried to tell him. Typical man choose the floozy over substance.

    • Anne

well he dumped her for stupid tv show, she didn’t really do anything wrong, she got the raw end of the deal. so how does that make her a floozy?

  • Mike

She’s right – Jake did go right to People. You know that took a little more planning than getting an article in Star. The man wanted to be a celebrity, his whole persona the first time he was on the show was clearly fake (now, it’s so clear) and he’s riding this wave of celebrity and not letting go.

    • To Mike

I agree. Didn’t Gillian say there is something about him that she is not sure if he is real. here is the proof!!

      • kahuna

I’m so glad that Jillian sniffed out this phony. Everything about him was a lie. When he came back in his pilot’s uniform to rat out Wes, does any body really believe that he flew there? That’s was just as phony as Ali sitting in a luxury hotel in a hotel robe, with a picture of Jake on the dresser, when she called Jake to ask if she could come back. A lot of this show is scripted. The two episodes I just described were set ups to bring Jake and Ali back as the new bachelor and bachelorette.

  • Really?

People b@tching and complaining about what the twilight saga does to our teenagers and yet grown men and women actually watch this crap?

    • sashay

Because it’s funny, and only some of the participants take it seriously. (well maybe a few misguided viewers). Twilight on the other hand, is never tongue-in-cheek and always takes itself too seriously. (Unlike True Blood, which is full of deliberate humour).
