Entertainment Weekly intern: A day in the life

How can you tell that times are changing? When you can make a video, post it on YouTube, and get a summer job out of it! Well, actually, there was a lot more to it than that — you know, interviews and applications and writing samples — but my shameless attempt to get a dream EW internship eventually led to…a real EW internship! Now I’m here, and it’s great.

I’ve been working in the EW New York offices for almost a month now, and things couldn’t be going any better. I’m learning, I’m writing, and I’m soaking in the whole experience. Since I’m having such a good time, I thought it might be fun to give people a little glimpse of what it’s like to be an intern here, so I put together another video — only this time, it’s in the EW offices, not my bedroom. Check out what a day in the life of an EW intern is like:

Fun stuff, right? It definitely beats working at Chick-Fil-A for the summer! (Which, for the record, I have done. Twice.)

I was working at EW in marketing when you first submitted your video asking to be an intern…word spread around the office pretty quickly because the video was awesome! I am SOOOO happy your dream came true! Congratulations!!! If every intern was as excited to work as you, the world would be a better place. It really shows how awesome the editors at EW are! Enjoy the summer and I hope they get you a permanent spot! Congrats again!

Pink shirt. Really? Power pink went out in the 90’s.
    Cute vid though.

    • Wha?

      Lisa Schwarzbaum is JEWISH??!

    • Brian

Using the term “power pink” went out in the ’90s, sure. Luckily, pink is still a color in 2010, it still looks good.

Ack. I want to kill you I’m so jealous. You probably won’t respond to this, but as a rising senior at a New York City college, what/where is the application process for an EW internship?

  • Andy

I hate to say it, but that intern is really cute.

    • Steven

Honestly…that was my first thought as well.

  • Josie

Yay Grady, I watch your videos on youtube. So jealous you get to intern at EW! You’re probably the cutest guy working there :x Good luck with everything!

  • Anne

  • Madd

  • Devin

    super jealous. also, date me.

  • fluff

You’re “on air” personality is cute and engaging, but if you want to be a writer I suggest that you stop using the word “sweet” immediately!

    • Grady Smith

      Sweet advice! ;)

    • Sara

      Your.

  • Hey Grady

    • Brian

  • JB

Isn’t this website meant to cover entertainment? Why on earth would you screen a bubbly intern opening mail?
Love Idolatry… loved Totally Lost (RIP). Sure, the hosts are fun, but they’re also knowledgeable and provide commentary and insightful interviews about shows I care about.
Not sure I understand the point of Intern TV.

    • malcontent

Not sure I understand the point of your comment. No content is being replaced. It is merely a nice behind the scenes human interest piece. Sigh.

    • Katja

What malcontent said. It’s not like they’re claiming this will be a regular series or anything (and even if it becomes one, so what? You don’t have to watch). I thought it was interesting, I always like seeing their offices and what goes on in this workplace that is so very different from my own…I thought it was interesting. Um, and not to add on to the whole creepy vibe that others have started, but this intern *is* pretty cute. :) Also the application video was hilarious – I LOVED all the shout-outs to individual staff members.

      • JB

Really? Im pretty sure EW doesn’t have limitless resources (unless “Athena Pheromones” are paying well above grade for their sad sponsored ad).
Plenty of places to see pretty faces. Not many places that do entertainment coverage as well as EW (this video aside).

  • melissa

I’m jealous! EW seems like the coolest place to work.

    Great video :P
