'Idolatry': Allison Iraheta performs acoustic 'Holiday,' talks 'Glam Nation' tour

If your bucket list includes “Listening to Allison Iraheta perform an insanely awesome, stripped-down rendition of ‘Holiday,'” get out your pen and get ready to cross off that task. And if it doesn’t, well, trust me, you’re still going to want to watch the video I’ve posted below. What’s remarkable is that when I met up with the American Idol season 8 rocker and her guitarist David Immerman in a dimly lit VIP lounge of New York City’s Nokia Theatre on Tuesday morning, the duo hadn’t even worked out an acoustic arrangement for the raucous cut from Allison’s Just Like You set. But after 15 minutes of tinkering, they concocted something that’s truly remarkable. So do press play below and prepare to get your face rocked off, then stick around for a quick Q&A in which Allison talks about her stint opening for Adam Lambert’s Glam Nation tour (or, wait, is he closing for her?), her cameo in Adam’s “If I Had You” video, and the perils of concocting a 20-minute set-list. And to get all my Idol news and commentary, follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak.

With no effects or amplification to the vocals or guitar, good stuff.

    • Scrubbie

ALLISON FTW!!! i miss you so much, so talented, what a voice!!!

  • Mari Guerra

OMG That was great!! Love her!

  • LOL

My bucket list includes never having to read another word about American Idol.

    • Mari

Then you should not follow Slezak lol.

This was awesome. Thank you Slezak for always giving us Allison fans a little something.

    • Blacksunshine

LOL this is not american idol, this is Idolatry :P

    • Siobhan Magnus rocks!!!!!!!

People-go on youtube and check out Siobhan Magnus’s performance of “Summertime” that she sang on the Wendy Williams show. The song is a beautiful beautiful song by Janis Joplin. Siobhan did a fantastic job at singing the song. She completely shined during that performance. That song is a song full of beautiful light and happiness. Siobhan is a wonderful, classic, epic, and talented shining star!!!! :)

      • Lurker

Summertime is a Gershwin tune, from PORGY AND BESS. Not Joplin, though she sang it.

      • Yo

Why you gotta bring up Siohban here? This is an Allison article.

      • petra

Iraheta has serious talent, she is a young woman. Her voice and style is not to everyone’s taste.
        Siobhan Magnus has certain similarities.
No need for “Yo” to appoint himself Thread Cop and say no mention of Siobhan is allowed, because we can be sure the Adam fanatics will pepper this thread.

As is, it is indeed worthwhile pointing out just how impressive Siobhan was doing “Summertime” on Wendy Williams. Williams, who has great acts on all the time, was seen with her jaw dropping as Magnus powered through improvised notes the band led her on. It was a star turn.
Idol may not have been a great vehicle for launching guy careers, except for Cook, Daughtry and the two gay guys.
But it is marvelous for being an early career boost for several young women – Clarkson, Pickler, White, Hudson, Fantasia, Underwood, Smithson, Sparks.

Maybe guys win more, but fortune favors the females.
Iraheta seems to be in that tradition, and hopefully Bowersox and the most talented and marketable Siobhan Magnus will join them.

Oh, petra, this is so old. You simply cannot pass up an opportunity to pimp your girl, can you? How sad,to think you do not have something more meaningful in your life than to worship at the feet of a third-rate singer (at best).

      • Siobhan Magnus rocks!!!!

AliFran-You are a low life hater. A hater like you does not know anything about “meaningful” and “life. People follow their heart when they write. AliFran when you write, it is just a low life who is jealous of Siobhan. You are a pathetic example on your daughter that you were talking about in your other comment.

Wow, that version of Holiday was epic, great job Allison and Dave. How has the radio world not turned more on to her, she deserves the attention. Thank You Slezak.

  • Leigh

Allison is awesome!!! Check out her performance of “Down with the Pretty” on Z100, too. Can’t wait for Myrtle Beach next week.

    • Grace W.

Agreed that Allison is awesome. But just a small correction – the song title is “Don’t Waste the Pretty”.

Though frankly, “Down with the Pretty” sounds kind of cool. Maybe she could write it for her next album?

    • Leigh

Thanks, Grace. Sorry about that. Guess I need to go to sleep.

  • Grace W.

Acoustic version of Holiday was AMAZING! I’m so happy we got to see this – but the Q&A was too short. I want more :-)

Thanks to Allison, Dave, and Michael for bringing this awesome performance to us!

Hi Allison, I also danced with the Emery Clay Claydettes, with Bev Baker, Mary Vinton, Judy Robinson, etc. Judy Robinson and I were the least exircpeneed and were chosen from the Tarkettes to join the group for the auditions in L.A., arranged by My Amato , of the Amato’s supper club down town Portland, This was in the early sixties. We stayed in a Mansion in L.A. and danced for many talent scouts, performed for Disney,Red Skelton Studios and as I remember, opened for Eddie Gourmet and Steve Lawence at the Coconut Grove also. It was an incredible experience for someone as young as I was at the time and I have fond memories of those days. There was an Allison in the line, was this you? A memory jog my father and mother had studios on the third floor at the Fine Arts Bldg and were vocal coaches and opera singers. Of course Emery had practically the whole 5th floor. Do you remember me? I wasn’t with them for long. I am so glad to hear that you continued to dance. Terrific. I moved to Florida in l984 and tied up with Georgy Taps French in St Petersburg for awhile. I had asked to use their studio to practice, cause I missed it so much and Georgy spied on me and was very impressed with the training that I had. We really did have a wonderful teacher in Emery. Love to hear from you Judy Engebretson Murphy.

Wow!! That stripped down Holiday was amazing! So full of win, she’s such a star! I wish she were going to complete the tour with Adam. We’ve heard she won’t be at the final month of concerts, and that’s too bad because she brings great energy to the show.

  • madnessinmotion

That girl is just plain awesome!! People, buy her CD!!! You won’t be sorry.

  • Leigh

Thanks, Michael. 15 points for helping the rocker.

    • Michael Slezak

      oh snappppzzzz!

      • Truth

        15 more points for replying.

We are witnessing the birth of the Queen of Rock. Stay patient peeps, Allison is 18 and she’ll be there by 25.

  • Erika

Wow that acoustic performance of “Holiday” was Incredible!!! And they came up with that in just 15 minutes?!!? Wow that is true talent right there! Allison never ceases to amaze me! What an amazing talent! Rock on Alli!!

  • Leigh

Michael, any chance we could get this acoustic version in Adam’s VH1 Posted section?? Please make it happen! Adam would be very pleased to help his little sister.

    • jme

Allison and her management should be able to promote her on their own terms, Posted is for Adam. I think he is doing enough to promote her by having her along on tour and having her appear in HIS video, whattaya want from him?

      • Leigh

You don’t know Adam very well, IMHO.

      • Leigh

Adam’s all about helping out his friends. It’s pretty clear, or didn’t you get the message in IIHY? You know, connectivity, partying in the woods with his friends, it’s better than fame or fortune, etc.

  • gracie

I’ll admit that on Idol I fell in love with Adam, but since Idol I have also fallen in love with Allison. I love her CD and I actually would say it is the album I listen to the most on my ipod. I am always trying to get my friends to listen to her album. When she sings I get goosebumps and I cannot control it. She is just amazing and we need more talented people like her making mainstream music.

    • Josh

I know!!!! If I have to hear Kesha or Bieber one more time I’m going to go crazy!

  • tyler

i like the uptempo holliday more, but this is really cool. nice work slezak!

    • 409musiclover

@AllisonIraheta is the most talented rocker out there now!!! She needs promotion she deserves to be an international star!!!

    • RoqueMocan

I like this acoustic Holiday too – different versions. This has a bluesy quality to it, and the record version is more straight rock. Kudos to Allison and Dave!

  • Agonizer

girls voice is like voodoo voodoo voodoo hehe
what did she make a deal with the devil or something?

kinda talent usually only comes from dolls and pins. Adam as well. Top two :)

    • Marlene

Agonizer; SHE is still a girl. SHE was only 17 years old. Maybe someone made a deal with the devil, but I am sure it is your MAMA.
Allison has an amazing voice! And the devil has nothing to do with it.

    • Angelo Barovier

Weird, cuz I think Agonizer is crediting her with Robert Johnson legendary devil-given rock talent. That is, he thinks she’s awesome — and you think she’s awesome, too. So, yeah, why the Mama jokes?

      • Pedro

This 17 years old girl is a decent and humble. Definitely, her incredible voice did not come from the devil, pins doll etc. IT Came from GOD! This great voice is God gift for Allison.

      • Tamer

Kathi – Jen did a terrific job I canont believe how many photos she took and yet you never really noticed her; she was never in the way.She somehow captured bliss in every shot! From the Groom’s Stepmom
