This week's cover: 'True Blood' heats up our list of Hot Summer TV

EW-1107-coverSummer is heating up and so will television screens with Sunday’s return of HBO’s sexy and scandalous vampire series, True Blood. We’ve got the scoop on the new season, which includes scary werewolves, even scarier new vampires, and the search for Bill Compton. We’ve also got your introduction to all the key new players, including werewolf Alcide, played by Joe Manganiello. And Manganiello tells EW that — shocker! — it didn’t take long for his clothes to come off. “Having been a fan of the show, you know you’re going to be naked at some point,” says the newcomer. “I will say that I was welcomed into the brotherhood of the sock. When you’re naked on the show, you have to wear a sock, and it’s not on your foot.”

Anna Paquin (who plays Sookie Stackhouse) is certainly used to getting naked on the show, but says the graphic love scenes are the least of her concerns. “It doesn’t really bother me,” she admits. “I’m really close with all of our cast, and we’ve all seen each other in various compromising and odd situations.” The actress is, of course, particularly close with fiancé Stephen Moyer (who plays Sookie’s vampire lover Bill), and Moyer says their real-life romance definitely adds to their love scenes. Jokes the actor, “I think that one great bonus is we don’t need a fluffer.”

In addition to serious True Blood scoop, we also present the 10 Must-See Shows of Summer, giving you all the advance intel on the return of favorites like Mad Men and Jersey Shore, as well as a rundown on hot new shows like The Big C and Haven. What other shows made the list? You’ll have to check out the issue and see for yourself!

Oh. My. God. I am going to die. I love you EW. My second favorite threesome in world.

    • Moe

      What’s your first favorite threesome??

      • Heather2

Ahem … I like that other vampire series too. Please don’t jump on me. I am sensitive.

      • Moe

Moe is getting angry! Moe is jumping here!

      • sam

If you are sensitive, I strongly suggest you don’t post stupid comments on the net.

      • Heather2

sam….F%$K You!!! Idiot. Learn a little respect, moron!!

      • fluffy

Ahem… Heather2. Get a grip. Only one person looks like a moron, and it’s not Sam.

      • miss k

geesh, one mention of the other vampire series and its downhill from there. lolz. but i LOVE the cover!

      • Ry

Funny thread:) But what the h- about the ‘other’ series. that’s not a series, it’s a meaningless advertisement scam with no discernible plot. True Blood is a crowd pleaser AND critic’s darling, the ultimate T.V. experience. Only a very shallow person would rate such a shallow movie experience over genius like True Blood.

      • Celia

        ^^I agree with Ry.

        1. This show is okay. The acting needs work and southern vampires is seriously a bad idea. 2. Anna Paquin is one of best actresses of our time. The Piano, Fly Away Home, Darkness, x-men franchise, Trick ‘r Treat, Almost Famous, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Since she was 11 years old she has been nothing but brilliant…but Im not a fan of her acting in true blood at all. She can do better. Also if she got her teeth fixed it wouldn’t change her at all just give her better teeth. My opinion, I hate when teeth have such a gap. So I wish she would fix it. It wont change her acting so Its no big deal. She obviously likes it she is 27 years old so in all reality its not worth any more talking about it. 3. Twilight is a great series of movies and books. Better than True blood thats for sure. Every vampire/werewolf kind of show/movie is good for the most part. Thank you and goodnight.

      • Ally

Twilight is better than true blood. True blood is just about sex and it gets seriously annoying. Why cant a show be good without being a porno.

    • Shannon

Totally feel the other Vampire Show and I’m 31. If you’re talking about the Diaries…

      • Zoey

I don’t think she’s talking about Vampire Diaries…though I am right on that boat with you. Granted, I am only 17, so I fit right into the demographic. But True Blood’s damn good too…if only I had HBO. Sigh.

    • Mel B

I’m there with ya sista… about to jump ship from Stephan to Damon…

  • Erica

Oh Stephen Moyer, ILU. You’re too funny. :)

  • Darren

Finally a good angle on Anna. I really wish she’d get her teeth fixed.

    • Emma

Oh please! She is beautiful! And what a body!

      • PK

Sure she IS beautiful but the teeth are such a distraction. Anna could fix the teeth and still look the same, just MORE beautiful. It’s not like it’s Jennifer Grey’s nose. Does anyone recognize her anymore? Nope.

      • haiz

that’s her unique feature, I actually like it, it sets her apart.

    • Belle

That is what they said about Lauren Hutton in the 70s and she refused and still became a famous & highly sought model. Anna looks great. She doesn’t look like all of the clones currently in Hollywood. The fake boobs cookie cutter.

    • Heather2

That is really mean dude. And superficial as hale. Anna is a beautiful girl. I wonder what you look like?

      • Darren

I’m the biggest prize around. I make those two hunks on the cover look like ugly, obese men.
You women would swoon if you saw me.
It already smells like an open can of tuna in this thread.

      • Heather2

Unless you look like Robert Pattinson or Alexander Skaarsgard, I am soooooo not interested.

      • Darren

Why have those two pretty boys when you could have a real man?

      • @Darren

Because I’m guessing that Heather2 would not be interested in a man who sounds like he’d struggle to be admitted to the brotherhood of the ankle sock??

      • Heather2

Meh, I have a real man. Not all it’s cracked up to be.

    • Madd

Please. I would kill to look like Anna.

    • cr

I like that she decided not to fix them. And for this character it works-she’s a poor waitress, having perfect hollywood teeth would seem out of place.

      • Dez

I hate the fake veneer look- there are tons of young actresses who have teeth too big for their mouth. Hilary Duff for one….

    • Celia

There’s nothing wrong with her teeth. The girl is gorgeous and so is her gap. It gives her character.
I can’t wait to see season 3! Book 3 (Club Dead) is my fave of the series! :D

    • kay

she makes the gap tooth realllly sexy… just as the show makes white trash sexy ;-)

  • maiv

    Best. Cover. Ever.

  • filmboymichael

    what’s wrong with them – she has a space – it’s not like they are rotting – she’s a beautiful woman….

  • Megan

Going out to get that tomorrow! LOVE IT:)

  • Sarah

Wow, I might just have to buy this issue.

  • Liz

Oh my…. Enough witht the teasing! I can’t wait for season 3!!
And you BET that Stephen & Anna have amaaazing chemistry!

  • TvNeRd

OMG!!! Thank You EW for an amazing cover. Can”t wait to read it!

  • xavierpnt

    Hottest Cover everrrrr!!!!

  • niela

i’ve seen it and it a very good show i will watch 3rd season

  • Barry

Lets hope they stick more to the book story line this year. Get rid of Tara; she is so annoying!!

    • Karen

I can deal with her in doses, but they really need to get a voice coach to help with her totally fake sounding southern accent.

      • Abby

Really glad she wasn’t as whiny and angry in Season 2. I really hated watching her in S1.

      • Celia

I’m from the south and Tara’s accent is tolerable…now Bill’s accent is absolutely TERRIBLE! I cringe every time he opens his mouth.

    • D2

You must be joking… Tara is the best.

      • Barry

She’s only in 1 scene in book 3 so we don’t need to see too much of her this season. Then again she was only in a limited part of book 2 & they built a whole storyline around her, Eggs & Maryann. Bell & company are taking too many liberties with her character.

      • Celia

In the books…she gets pregnant and marries a guy that Sookie used to have a crush on. I wonder if the books will follow suit?

    • who cares

this is the part in the books where Tara starts playing a bigger part. so do you want them to get rid of her or stick to the books?!?!

    • Madd

Honestly, I agree. Part of it is the actress’ accent. But she’s also the reason the Marryann story stretched out so long. And Eggs? I mean, he was hot, but he was beyond annoying.

    • PatKat

I agree. I always mute the TV when Tara comes on—the actress has a real painted on accent and can’t act her way out of a paper bag. Time she does.

      • Anna

She’s a fine actress and a graduate of Juilliard School Drama. You’re not one to judge her acting if you are muting her scenes.

      • Sundevilsarah

Oh yes, she can act! She shows an incredible range of emotions. I enjoy watching her and Ryan Kwanten. It may be a campy show with lots of naked people, but they have great actors in the secondary roles. I watched the unofficial pilot when it leaked online and Tara was played by a different actress- badly. I love Tara and I hope they branch out of the books more to include her in the central storylines. Same with Lafayette.

  • RK

I finally caught a few episodes, since I had HBO in a hotel. It’s a terrible show.

    • who cares

      you’re a terrible show

      • Nicole

        Ha!! Loves it.

      • 2FunE

        Funniest thread eva!

      • miss k

  • Jody

I am so glad I subscribe to this magazine. Now I just hope the postman doesn’t get his sweat on it this time. I love True Blood!

    • Ariel

He got sweat on it! ewwwwww!!

  • jfms777

She looks like a real woman. And smart, too. How many tv actresses can make that claim? And the
surgeons’ knives seem to work on skin of younger women each day. What a commentary on society.
