Could 'Bourne' live on without Matt Damon?

bourneAction fans might have to test their allegiances in 2012: That’s when Universal is planning on releasing a fourth Bourne pic (yay!) that may not star Matt Damon (boo!). The studio has hired Tony Gilroy (writer of all three Bourne films) to script a fourth movie in the series even though Damon is not yet on board (the actor has said he will not return to the franchise without director Paul Greengrass, and Universal has not yet confirmed whether he’ll be part of a fourth film).

Do you think Bourne could live on without Damon? We can’t help but think of that other famous J.B. — James Bond — who has survived no fewer than six re-castings in his 50-plus years on screen. But could another actor fill Jason Bourne’s shoes? Or is Damon a non-negotiable part of the series’ success? Think it over and then vote in our poll below!

Sure, but I’d rather have Damon and Greengrass involved. If they aren’t then Bourne should get more than a few years off screen or it is likely to feel inferior, even if it isn’t. Bourne has a definitive story arc. Bond, even with the last two films playing like one long film, is a collection of disperate adventures.

As much as I like Bourne, I don’t really know how much more story there is to tell (sorry, haven’t read the books, so I don’t know how far the story goes). Within those three movies, Bourne already found out about his past history. Is he just going to keep running in the fourth film? At least with Bond, he was a spy and had different missions in each movie. Maybe they should have a movie based on one of the other assassins.

But to get back to the original question, I think it’s too soon to have another person as Bourne, at least to me.

Ehhh i would say most likely not, but then again who would have thought that a franchise movie like Batman could be redone in such a way. Matt Damon is kinda what makes the movie tick so we will see…

Bourne needs to be Damon. Look at how many “Jack Ryans” we had! Bond can get away with it because that franchise has been well established over the years. But Matt Damon is and should remain Jason Bourne.

Matt Damon is Bourne and many us would find it difficult to see another person play his character. I think I have found a decent replacement. Sam Worthington would be a solid person to cast. I could see him doing some damage (like in terminator salvation) and the guy seems pretty sharp. Thoughts?

If they can make this series into something similar like “James Bond” (and make it enjoyable), then I’m all for them recasting the character and trying to continue the franchise. But it will be hard though – Matt Damon was da bomb as Jason Bourne!!!!

i love these movies and i can’t see anyone else playing bourne except damon. he is a star that i simply love. he isn’t too superficial and can actually act. that seems to be really rare in action movies. i will not watch a bourne movie without damon

There is a HUGE difference between Connery-era Bond and Bourne… the last Bourne film was GREAT! Connery was disinterested by time Thunderball came around and was out of shape and balding by the time You Only Live Twice was made. It was obvious in that film that Connery just didn’t have it in him any more. Her Majesty’s Secret Service took a huge risk with Lazenby and almost sunk the franchise (great movie though… despite the silly plot). When Connery came back for Diamonds are Forever, the magic was gone and the audience was officially ready to move onto a new Bond. With Bourne, Damon can still pull it off and no one is really itching to see someone else in the role. And really, Bourne isn’t Bond… he’s a much harder character to keep creating stories for.

it needs damon and greengrass, or else i’m not interested.

How can they have a Bourne movie with Matt!!??!

  • Darren

It will be a tough sell. Bourne doesn’t have the history of Bond where they could get away with having another actor in this day and age. Damon made Bourne his own. The producers should have Damon name his price.

They need to make one more damn movie with Matt Damon’s Jason finally hooking up with Nikki and then I’d be okay with them passing the torch. I’ve been waiting 10 years for that. Don’t screw with it now.

    • Madd

I’m still upset about Marie’s death, but he and Nikki definitely have chemistry.

  • Madd

No. I would LOVE another film, but not without Damon, or Greengrass for that matter.

  • Ben

I’d rather see Bourne without Damon anyway. Matt Damon is overrated as an actor. Why not replace him with Mark Wahlberg? They look somewhat alike and Wahlberg can play the part as well if not better than Damon.

    • Kevin

BWAHAHAHAHA!!! You’re funny Ben. Why not just give it to Ted McGinley? Or that guy that plays E on Entourage? How about Freddie Prinze Jr.? They are all just as qualified as Wahlberg… hehehe, I can’t stop laughing at this suggestion.

        Thumbs-up on this response.

Sorry, I doubt I’d watch another Bourne movie without Matt! He IS Bourne! Hopefully they can work this out! If not, they’ve just lost a fan.

  • Abby

They need to meet Matt’s demands. It wouldn’t interest me without Matt.
