Stanley Tucci joins 'Captain America': Well, you can't say that the cast isn't talented

stanley-tucciImage Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR Photos2009 was a big year for beloved character actor Stanley Tucci. He batted great acting back and forth with Meryl Streep as the supportive husband in Julie & Julia, and then freaked out children everywhere (and earned an Oscar nom) with his performance in The Lovely Bones. Now he’s earned his reward, Hollywood-style: a supporting role in a superhero movie! Tucci has been cast in Captain America: Please Don’t Tell Me They’re Actually Going To Subtitle This “The First Avenger” as Dr. Abraham Erskine, the scientist whose top secret serum turns a scrawny 4-F zero into an all-American hero.

Tucci’s a great actor, so I’m not too worried about his ability to maintain a believable German accent. (As both of his rightfully-praised performances last year proved, he can definitely pull of Erskine’s mustache.) And as someone who’s been a bit skeptical about the Captain America movie, I have to say that all the choice casting announcements (Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull! Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan!) have me more and more excited for the 2011 movie. (SPOILER ALERT from here for those not geekishly aware of the comic’s history‚Ķ)

Of course, we probably shouldn’t get too excited about Tucci’s involvement, since in pretty much every telling of the Captain America origin story, Erskine gets assassinated almost immediately after giving Cap the super soldier treatment. (I might be forgetting a continuity reboot, of course.) Still, it’s pretty cool that we’ve reached a point where even minor roles in superhero movie are played by great actors. And nobody deserves the visibility more than Tucci. Can he get his own HBO show now?

PopWatchers, what do you think about this latest bit of Captain America casting? Are you excited for the potential prequel spinoff, Erskine: Escape from the Fatherland?

It’s weird, but the thing that has me most excited for this movie (besides Hugo Weaving)…is the costume. I saw the post here about the Captain America and Thor costumes, and while I’m not feeling Thor’s so much…Captain America’s is kind of hot. And I know people are wary of Chris Evans because he was already Johnny Storm, but that’s a fine-looking man and I am looking forward to seeing him in this hot-ass suit. (Also I really didn’t like the Fantastic Four movies so I’m not remotely bothered by double-dipping.) Apologies for thinking with my hormones, but in a genre where the relatively few women who don’t need men to rescue them are portrayed with the most ridiculously skimpy attire, impractical high-heeled boots, and insanely huge racks, I think it’s only fair that I get to enjoy some eye candy too. :)

Chris Evans, simply put, does not, at this time, have the physical build to match the Cap character at all. As Johnny Storm, he was adequate, but still not blonde as the comic book character was, but still adequate. As the Cap?? he’s going to really have to hit the Wheaties, and regardless of the costume colors, he ain’t going to make it.

And if nothing else, ask him to cook you the pasta *bomb* if his pal Tony Shalhoub is available!!

My name is Muerte!! Hi Morty!!

Last month EW cast him to play Mr. Howell in the new film version of “Gilligan’s Island”. Only after he finishes that can he do his own HBO show.

You forgot one of the biggest things he’s done this year – he directed a great revival of Lend Me A Tenor on Broadway! That is huge!
