'Spider-Man' reboot: The search for America's Next Top Superhero

Ortega/PR PhotosWe already know there’s a new Spider-Man movie on the way, a gritty, 3-D origin story with no Maguire or Dunst or Raimi in sight. We know it’ll be directed by Marc Webb of (500) Days of Summer, and that it’ll hit theaters July 3, 2012 — a mere 768 days away! But we still don’t know the answer to our biggest question: Who’s going to take over web-slinging duties as the new Peter Parker? But that might be about to change…

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Webb has narrowed down the pack of potential Parkers (say it five times fast!) a bit, producing five front-runners for what has to be the industry’s most coveted role. (Unfortunately, there’s no overlap with the wish list we made back in January. Sorry, Zac Efron!) Check out the list of finalists below, and then let us know who you’d like to see in the role in 2012!

Jamie Bell
Age: 24
Credits: Billy Elliot, Defiance, Jumper
Pros: The 24-year-old’s star-making role in 2000′s Billy Elliot proved he’s got the acting chops — and tights-wearing ability — for the part.
Cons: He’s already landed the lead in Steven Spielberg’s mega-budget The Adventures of Tintin (out December 2011). If Spidey’s producers really want an unknown for the role, Bell might be too big.

Alden Ehrenreich
Age: 20
Credits: Tetro
Pros: Yet another Spielberg proteg√©, Ehrenreich was discovered by the director in a bat mitzvah video. He’s since starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro and has a part in Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere this December.
Cons: Alden who?

Frank Dillane
Age: 19
Credits: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Pros
Dillane already has his backstory merit badge: He played a young Tom Riddle in the last Potter pic.
Cons: With Potter that as his only major credit, is Dillane too green to wear Spidey’s red and blue?

Andrew Garfield
Age: 27
Credits: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Pros: He’s already done gritty (and then some) in the chilling British Red Riding trilogy.
Cons: The movie is set in Parker’s high school days, which means that, at 27, Garfield would be the Andrea Zuckerman of the superhero set.

Josh Hutcherson
Age: 17
Credits: Zathura, Journey to the Center of the Earth
Pros: He’s the right age for the role and already a seasoned Hollywood vet.
Cons: The first thing listed under trivia on the kid’s IMDB page? “His favorite superhero is Batman.” Whoops.

Okay, PopWatchers: Time to vote!

Out of these, I like Dillane.

I was impressed by his brief performance in “Half Blood Prince” and he’s young enough to credibly star as Peter Parker in a few Spidey flicks.

I’m not sure I agree with your con…having “Potter” as his only major credit didn’t seem to hurt that Pattinson guy.

    • Doug

Yes because Edward at the time was just as big as Spider-Man….

      • Ceballos

Obviously, Edward wasn’t anywhere near as big as Spider Man at the time, but he was big enough that fans almost revolted and roared with disapproval when Pattinson was first cast.

I get your point that Spider-Man is a much more iconic character, but it IS hard for me to imagine that people will care about the new Spider Man as much as they did when Pattinson was cast.

That’s actually not a critique of the Spider Man character – it has more to do with the fact that Raimi’s movies are still pretty recent and this reboot feels almost completely unnecessary. Everything about this reboot so far gives off a strong whiff of “meh.”

Frank Dillane is my pick as well. He had a small role in HBP, but he was brilliant. I love his talent and his whole look.

Where’s the None Of The Above option?

    • whatnowsucka

I know right? I still want Logan Lerman. I don’t really care that he just booked The Three Musketeers either. He can drop that :)

    • SajiNoKami

      Yes please.

What is with the reboots? I used to think Hollywood was creatively bankrupt with all the sequels they made. Now they can’t even come up with sequels, so they just remake them and call them “reboots”. Pathetic.

    • bkwurm1

I guess the Spiderman franchise needs to be rebooted so that eventually it can fit into the overall world being created for the Marvel characters. The new Spiderman will exist in the same world as the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, ect. With that in mind it makes sense…as long as the reboot doesn’t suck.

    • Bart

The Spider-Man rights revert back to Marvel (and thus, Disney) if Sony doesn’t get a Spidey in production by a certain date. With Raimi/Maguire/Dunst out and losing their biggest cash cow not an option, they had to come up with an alternative…

    • deshawn

pete reboots and reamkes are different get your facts straight reboots change continuity but keep the basic blueprint of the orginal remakes comepltly change storylines and characters or erase characters.Second hollywood has creativity but all those movies you know went through hell to get to where they are at it takes alot of work just because it’s orginal doesn’t mean it’s good.

I like Josh Hutcherson the best out of these pics. I’ve seen quite a few of his movies and have basically watched him grow up thorugh film. His performance in “Little Manhattan” was his best so far, in my opinion, and since he is so young, he could grow with the part and make a very believable Peter Parker.

  • joe

I was really hoping for Joseph Gordon Levitt.

    • J

      Me too.

  • Madd

Am I the only one who doesn’t want a reboot? I love Spider-Man and all, but I’m fine with the original origin flick.

    • CLH

I’m with you. I like the original. My 4yr old son is a spider man fanatic and we have watched the originals so many times (too many in my book). It is actually the only non cartoon he will sit through. I am kind of curious to see his reaction to the change since in his eyes there is no such person as Tobey McGuire. To him he is “Peter Parker”. Maybe I will just keep this one silent (if his dad will let me)

    • SajiNoKami

Been reading comics for 20 years, they always reboot, gives us a different vibe. Why not the movies?

    • Celia

I don’t want it, but clearly it’s happening.

What happened to Logan being the front-runner?

  • The Situation

Hmmm… tough call. I honestly can’t see any of these guys as Peter Parker. I’m just gonna have to trust Sony on this one. I’m actually looking forward to this reboot. Just hope this isn’t as gritty and dark as rumored.

  • Evie

I’m sure they’re all great actors and all but I was really pulling for Logan Lerman. I don’t know. This whole origin story deal isn’t really growing on me. I’ll still go see the movie but I’d rather have a Raimi/Maguire/Dunst Spiderman. I really loved that franchise!

  • GeeMoney

    Please – no reboot!

  • Tookie

    Tim Urban!

    • SajiNoKami

Oh I like that kid! I would watch this. Wonder if he can act.

  • Mike

Oh dear God, this movie is DOA! Someone please go smack some sense into that director and let a viable choice for peter parker be cast because these choices are just awful!!!

  • Kiki

I’m confused…didn’t we just have a Spiderman origin story? Why do we need this movie?

  • Scott

I’ve seen The Kids Are All Right and Josh is excellent in it. I think that is the most viable choice. I love Gordon-Levitt but if this is high school, he’s too old.

  • walt kovacs

can someone explain why spidey is being rebooted and why we need another origin story?

raimi didnt kill the franchse…spidey 3 was not batman and robin

and i dont like any of these actors

    • deshawn

it was batman and robin to many i never liked the frnachise though i always felt tobey was to depressing and they did to many sympathetic villans overall ramis film’s aren’t spiderman film’s.They’ve said this will be darker more in vein of the ultimate franchise which is alot better mor ejokes better stories always orginal and great twist this could work.
