'Eclipse' tickets go on sale at midnight Thursday

twilight-eclipseImage Credit: Kimberley FrenchTickets for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will go on sale at midnight Thursday on Fandango and MovieTickets.com, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The timing coincides with the May 13 airing of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner’s sitdown with Oprah Winfrey. The third film in the franchise has a lot to live up to: In November 2009, the second movie, New Moon, set all kinds of advance-ticketing records for the online outlets, selling out more theaters pre-release than The Dark Knight and movies from both the Harry Potter and Star Wars franchises for Fandango, and becoming MovieTicket.com’s No. 1 advance ticket seller of all time, breaking a nearly five-year-old record set by Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.

Does Eclipse have that kind of traction? Let’s see…

Yep buying my tickets in advance. Can’t wait to see it, but still have mixed emotions about how well the movie will be done.

    • Dwight K Schrute

Twilight is the worse franchise ever. I’d rather eat sharp rocks.

      • Yep

        Yep…I agree.

  • Stella

This is my favourite book of the series and I am weary about seeing it brought to the big screen. I don’t have my hopes held up too high as this movie franchise has been a huge disappointment in terms of adapting the novels to the screen. I’ll still go see it, but will not be buying my ticket in advance.

  • D

One more unnecassary Twilight article and im done with EW.
You know Harry has a movie coming out right? Member Harry, with the top selling francise of all time? No, of course you dont youre all crazy twi-hards.

    • Heather2

Yep, I am a HP fan too. But that doesn’t come out until November right?

      • Remy

It may not be till November, but EW has been covering the hell out of Eclipse since New Moon hit theaters. It’d be nice to see the same love given to Harry Potter.

      • Heather2

I understand where you are coming from. It does get a little excessive. I guess if you are not crazy about Twilight like I am, it is probably really annoying.

      • @Remy

Agreed. It wouldn’t be a big deal if they covered Eclipse (and the Twilight franchise as a whole) if they showed the same level of slavish, excessive attention to other franchises. The hilarious thing is, there are MANY franchises that have vastly outperformed Twilight worldwide, yet that don’t get the level of publicity. For all the overinflated Twilight hype, it STILL hasn’t really reached the height of other series, where $300M-$500M or more is par for the course.

      • dizzy

@Remy, I’ve always found that baffling. Twilight gets this excessive and ridiculous publicity from many media outlets, but the other franchises (who don’t get that type of publicity) have done some much better with at the box office and with audiences and critics alike.

      • Morgaine

I agree with Heather, Remy, et al. I think the coverage for the Twilight movie was warranted…it really was a cultural phenomenon. But it wasn’t as over the top as NM was, and NM STUNK. Summit put out some major coin for the advertising and gimmicky appearances for NM, going so far as having major Twilight actors at outlets the first day of DVD sales of NM. The interest in “Twilight” was mainly fan-driven. The interest in “NM” was partly fan driven, but the closer the release date became, the worst the fan response to the trailer/s was, and the more Summit upped the events/ads. Was there any hoopla about the Twilight DVD release? I don’t think so. IT WASN’T NEEDED.

The Potter franchise has a lot of class, and has never forgotten its original fan base. The Twilight franchise has become, well, TACKY.

      • yep

If they were to give equal advertisement to big movies it would not be so bad, but i’m actually tired of hearing about Twilight movies that I don’t even want to see them anymore.
If they give Twilight movies a theme park like they did to Harry Potter Im done with the whole movie thing.

    • Kat

I so hear you D!!! I’m a Harry Potter fan too .Can’t WAIT for Deathly Hallows. But I’m also a Twi fan. However, I loved the movie TWILIGHT, couldn’t stand New Moon, yuk, and am so passing on seeing Eclipse, yech. I love the cast but Weitz/Slade are filming different books from the ones I read. Catherine Hardwicke got it just right. I’ll go see any films she directs because she rocks.

    • topher

Just for the record, Star Wars is the top selling franchise of all time. Harry Potter is #2.

      • James

Only if you’re talking domestically. Worldwide, HP has quite a bit on Star Wars.

      • topher

Ahh, thanks for the clarification. Box Office Mojo didn’t specify. That said, Entertainment Weekly is an American magazine so domestic numbers technically make more sense for purposes of this conversation. Either way, Twilight loses.

      • kaitlynn

star wars sucks!just saying.. the twilight saga is my favorite!! harry potter is really good big fan of them as well.

    • Shiny

I had to cancel my subscription. At least with the online edition you can step around the great big fat mounds of Twilight everywhere.

    • Morgaine

The Twilight franchise has become a joke. The Harry Potter franchise has been rock-solid and fan-oriented from the beginning to the end. I can’t wait to see the new Potter movie. I’d rather stick needles in my eyes than see Eclipse. I used to be a loyal Twilight fan. I adored the book series and the first movie, Twilight. NM was the worst movie I’ve ever seen in my life. I won’t waste money on seeing another Twilight franchise movie.

      • Kristen

I’m with you. There is too much overkill on Twilight.I loved Twilight but New moon wasn’t that great. I will see Eclipse but at a cheaper show. I am not spending ten bucks or more.

      • Krishna

Agree Morgaine. No way I’d ever see Eclipse. It would be torture. I loved Twilight. What a wonderful film that is. Still. And loved the books. New Moon was an absolute STINKER film. YUK YUK YUK. The Harry Potter Franchise has used it’s stable of stellar British Dames and Sirs and it shows. Plus, it’s been consistent in its design and costumes. As well, it keeps the SAME ACTORS. But New Moon looked very different than Twilight and worse. And Slade fired Rachelle LeFevre who IS Victoria and hired BDHoward in that stupid red wig. No – the Twi film series is over for me. But the Harry Potter series is sensational. So looking forward to the last 2: Deathly Hallows 1 & 2.

    • darrin

well harry potter isn’t until november and i’m sure you will see all over ew around that time too. “twilight” related stories and merchandise sell because of its dedicated fan base too. its takes a lot to sell magazines today so who can blame them. plus the “twilight” movies seem to be closer together than the “harry potter” films release so that might be why you’ve seen it so much on here and everywhere else. last but not least – if you don’t like something don’t click on it/flip the page instead of making a stupid comment about something you don’t like obviously

    • Dina

One more unnecessary bad comment about Twilight and I’m going to stop reading comments. Why would you even read this article if you are so sick of the “Twilight craze”. Is it so hard to understand that some people simple love these books and movies? If you hate it so bad then don’t see it. If you are tired of hearing about it don’t read the article. Get over yourself.

      • Then don’t

You don’t have to read them. It’s obviously not going to stop. Take your own advice and don’t read these comments if you’re so sick of the “craze”.

  • Yesenia

I’m buying in advance because I bought my tickets at the theater for New Moon and it was just too intense. I’d rather get them ahead, breeze through to the concessions and go relax.

Accoring to those who have seen the movie at Oprah’s prescreening, this movie is closest to the book than the other two and after seeing the previews I don’t know how anyone could say this looks awful. I think Twilight was the worst out of the 3 so far.

    • Sassy1

I think u need to get your eyes tested or your head checked…how could anyone think that xtrmly bad contacts, make-up, clothing & wigs look gd…how can you enjoy watching those choppy scenes in NM. I loved TWILIGHT, it captured the true essence of a love story…NM had no emotions and made the actors look bad…if someone watched NM without reading the bks, they would think…WHAT THE???
I’m sure most ppl who loved NM are the same ppl who love shows like the HILLS & every other teeny bopper reality show out there…

  • Megg

When does the movies come out again? The article didn’t say. A friend convinced me to see the first two with her, and while I may not be a Twilight fan myself, I wouldn’t mind seeing the third one with her. That’s what friends do. Makes for a fun girls night out.

    • KatieBell

I had to look it up at IMDB – it comes out on June 30th. I’m flummoxed that they are putting the tickets on sale more than a month ahead of the film. That’s kind of crazy.

      • Megg

        Thanks!

    • Morgaine

Friends don’t take friends to tacky Twilight franchise movies.

      • Megg

It’s sort of like a win-win situation. I get our tickets and she buys us drinks beforehand, that way we can both be happy. :)

  • Kate

What would Mandi Bierly write about if Twilight didn’t exist? I don’t know why she doesn’t quit EW and go work for Summit’s PR team; that’s who she works for already, practically. I usually go see these movies with my friends (don’t judge me; I still think they suck) and we’ll probably pre-order tickets. But we didn’t need a pointless EW blurb to tell us they were going on sale.
And way to tout NM’s ticket sale records while simultaneously neglecting to mention that the ticket sales didn’t translate into box office above Batman, Harry Potter 6 or Star Wars. Burn…

    • Ambient Lite

I’m actually glad for the article, I was just wondering when the tickets would go on sale. Settle down.

  • Emma

I think New Moon was by far the worst of the 3. Eclipse actually looks quite good and the reviews from the fans have been encouraging. Lots of Edward/Bella.

  • Emma

    Also, I’m getting tickets early.

  • HotMama

Finally! I’ve been checking my favorite theater everyday to see if they were on sale yet. I missed out on the New Moon midnight tickets. Definitely buying early this year.

  • gagirl265

I will be getting my tickets in advance…..My daughter and I are counting down to the day it opens… I don’t care if is mindless entertainment, sometimes that is exactly what we need to escape the everyday pressures we all live with.

Plus, it is fun to enjoy something my daughter also enjoys…..

  • benny

Too bad kids and parents don’t stay up until midnight on homework and reading and all the other stuff that’s fallen by the wayside. Future leaders of America indeed.

    • Morgaine

ITA. Or friends staying up to read the new HP when it came out, then reading straight through. I’m not young, and it was hard but still fun.

  • Fridge

I must live in a really small town or just not care about getting my tickets this far in advance–doesn’t this movie come out in June? I like Twilight, but even as a fan I’m getting tired of all the coverage–I prefer not to know everything about a movie before I go and see it, and I could really care less about all the minutiae of what’s going on on the set or in the lives of the actors.

    • Ambient Lite

Maybe you do live in a really small town, or movies just don’t sell out there like they do in larger areas, I don’t know. But for fans who are anxious to see it opening night in my area, we need to buy tickets now. New Moon was completely sold out throughout my city for the first couple of nights it debuted.
As for the minutiae of the set or what’s going on with the actors’ personal lives, I agree – which is why I look forward to EW’s coverage, which (unlike a Twi-site) doesn’t generally make mention of that stuff.

  • shaimous82

these books have gotten a lot of kids to want to read. so it cant be too bad of a thing!! plenty of my friends loved these books, and started reading other stuff too know. it reminded them reading can be fun!!

  • Heather2

It’s the same ole thing everyday. Arguing, debating, pointing fingers, accusatory comments, and downright rudeness. At the end of the day, some of us enjoy Twilight and some of us don’t. Some of us really love it, for more reasons that just the films themselves, which in general are definitely disappointing. I think that goes without saying. And then there are people who are the extreme opposite that hate it with a bloody passion. I do not see the point of arguing about it or trying to convince the other side that this side of the fence is the way to go. You either like or don’t. No hater is going to make me think Twilight sucks and is a waste of my time. I love it and will continue to love it, not so much for the films, but for the cast and the books. Can we move on and just deal with the reality that EW is going cover this thing pretty microscopically for the next two months? You are going to cover something that gives you the most hits to your site. That is simple math.

    • @Heather2

Unfortunately the hits are just sniping back and forth between haters and people like you. I doubt EW cares, though. If you read the comments it’s the same 2-3 people responsible for a third of the posts.

      • Heather2

I think EW cares more than you think.

Why do you think there have been six Twilight covers? It sells.

    • Morgaine

How refreshing. A poster spewing criticism about other posters for–GASP!!!–expressing their opinions on a message board (some of it critical, some not) about the topic!
      Look in a mirror, Sistah.
It’s all just opinions, and opinions are just words. The power they carry are the power you give them.

      • Heather2

*heavy sigh* Ok, can you please reread my comment. I never once told people NOT to hate on Twilight. Just merely to quit arguing about it. Maybe you should READ a comment before jumping all over somebody. I don’t despise anyone for not liking Twilight, just frown upon those that try to make me feel bad about it.

  • hooiskellie

    eek! i am so excited!!!
