Elizabeth Perkins is leaving 'Weeds.' Who needs a margarita?

weeds-perkinsImage Credit: Cliff Lipson/ShowtimeElizabeth Perkins is ending her five-season run on Showtime’s Weeds. She’s leaving the green and heading for more computer-generated pastures in the new James Marsden vehicle Hop. This sentence just seems so sad: “Perkins will play Marsden’s exasperated mother.” According to THR, Perkins is also developing a comedy series in which she’d star.

This is definitely a loss for Weeds, but Perkins’ character, Celia, has become so tragic over the years that it was probably time she was put out of her misery. She used to be the savvy and hilarious villain; now she’s just a joke. Once the gang ditched Agrestic to run a sandwich shop and human-trafficking maternity wear boutique down by the border, it was like the show just didn’t know what to do with Celia anymore, most likely because it never made sense for her to even be down there. (The same applies to the rest of the cast!) Every time she came on-screen in season 5, she would just sort of mumble and grope the air around her as if there might be invisible pills in there. She became so pathetic. Elizabeth Perkins is not pathetic!

I miss the old Weeds. Can they just pretend Mexico never happened and suddenly wake up stuffed into Nancy’s hybrid in a purple haze…peanut butter on the ceiling, iced coffee everywhere?

Season 6 begins in August. Will you miss Celia?

Earlier: I’d see Russell Brand and James Marsden’s new movie ‘I Hop’ if it were retitled ‘IHOP’

    Shelley Long redux

    • Buffy Freak

Hardly. Long left Cheers when it was at it’s ratings and creative peak. Weeds left those peaks a while back.

      • Juuust a little outside

Actually, I thought Cheers got even better after Shelley Long left, and Kirstie Alley was a hottie then.
I agree that Weeds’ peak has been passed. Once human trafficking made an entrance, the show was harshing my buzz.

you know your old when you compair anything to cheers bawhaha pass the bong ol stoner and leave the creative thinking to someone with few brain cells left.

      • SirLizard

You mean like someone who doesn’t have enough brain cells left to spell “compare” correctly?

    • SirLizard

Apples and oranges with your Shelley Long comparison. Long left “Cheers” of her own accord because she thought that her career was on the rise (and, I think, because she wanted too much money). I get the impression from things that I’ve read that Celia is being written out of the show for “creative reasons,” not because of any demands that Perkins has made.

They aren’t in Mexico… they live just north of the border in California, hence the end of the tunnel.

Anyway, I thought the show was dead since where else can we go but with everyone being dead!

  • Buffy Freak

Well it’s too bad because she was so great on the show. But she’s probably smart getting on the last lifeboat off this sinking ship. I still watch hoping it will get back to the old Weeds but the last two seasons have been pretty bad.

    • Scott P

Agreed, I’m sadly pretty much ready to give up on this show after that last season. They had a good run at least.

    • Dis

I disagree. I think seasons 4 and 5 were great. A whole different direction, sure, but are you people really only satisfied when a TV show rehashes the same old crap year after year? I think having it go in completely new directions is great. Well done Weeds! Keep up the good work!

this is one of my favorite shows!
how is this going to works Celia leaving the show will be the final nail in the coffin! they set her up to have an awesome story line in the next season with her taking over nancy’s buisness id rather see Nancy gone then celia I LOVE HER she will be misssed so much!! this SUCKS!

    • Celia

I just started watching the show and she’s my favorite character. This makes me sad.

    • k

i totally agree i was so excited to watch her in her crazyness of wanting to be nancy and then when season 6 started and she wasnt there and ignassio was it didnt really make sense and kevin nealon shows up ans says nothing im lost they left a huge hole that needs filling

  • Jackie

I am sad to see her go. Her cavorting around the last few episode of Season 5, imitating Nancy, was some of her best work. I wanted to see how Thug Life worked out for her. Plus, she is a talented actress who will be missed.

  • paige

so will she be in this coming season? this show needs to end. badly.

  • GoddessLu

I imagine they’ll have to pop her and that will explain her being gone. Too bad–I was looking forward to the renewed relevance of Celia Hodes, a character enmeshed in all their lives (Doug, her husband, the lesbian daughter, Nancy, hell even her other daughter Quinn. Good luck to the excellent Elizabeth Perkins. Sad for us. Hopefully Nancy’s patron will bite the big one too and either she escalates to a position of power or goes back to the burbs with a hell of a story.

  • Dropper

The show has definitely been circling the drain since they left Agrestic and dropped Conrad. I am not even looking forward to the new season. Elizabeth is making a good move here.

  • Madd

I’ve loved Elizabeth Perkins since I first saw Big and I’m sure she’ll be great in this new show. She’ll probably even be great in that Hop thing.

    • dingus-dangus

BIG was the greatest movie ever made thank you tom hank

  • graeme

She was the one redeeming factor of an otherwise terrible season 5. I don’t think I’ll be back for the new season now.

  • Snarf

So She’ll be in the upcoming season but that’s it?

  • jfms777

So sad. And you are so right. When they all left Agrestic, the “jump the shark” stage had been achieved. This Mexican thing has been a disappointment. I watch for Mary-Louise, but even Nancy’s character has taken a drop.

  • Owen

Amen. “Can they just pretend Mexico never happened and suddenly wake up stuffed into Nancy’s hybrid in a purple haze…peanut butter on the ceiling, iced coffee everywhere?.”

  • Avery-J

She was smart to get out. I saw season 5 on dvd last month and it was pretty bad. It’s really mean spirited with dumb jokes thrown in. I think the writers like degrading their characters. —–Spoiler——-Plus in some of the commentary feature tracks the writers and actors make more lame jokes about that “rapish” scene with Nancy. If I was Elizabeth Pekins I wouldn’t want to be involved with the people runing this show either.

  • Nicole

Wow – I’m pretty surprised at all of the hate on the last two seasons. I admit that season 4 wasn’t up to the usual standards, but I really liked season 5 and can’t wait for season 6. I love Celia Hodes though, and I will miss her. She’ll be in this season coming up, right? I assume they’ve already filmed most of it by now.

We’ve still got Andy, Guillermo, Doug and Dean as awesome sidekicks to Nancy. And now, with Celia leaving and considering the end of season 5, hopefully we’ll see much more of Isabelle, Silas and Shane in the spotlight. All three are great.

    • John Smith

They should give celia her own show on showtime (lol) just like when angel left buffy he got his own spinoff. kinda like that. :) weeds is getting very very shitty. :(

      • Disappointed

They have killed this show. How am I the only one that seems to have noticed that they have cut their ENTIRE cast down to 5?! Especially after season 5 ended and they’re gearing up to start their own pot business. Season 6 is the death of this show.
