Katy Perry's light-up dress at the Met Gala: Yay or nay?

Katy-Perry-dressFashion and Hollywood joined forces last night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s annual gala in New York, where Zoe Saldana, Kate Hudson and Blake Lively, among others, strutted their stuff in decadent gowns and intricate minis. The gala is known to be somewhat of a costumed event (see here and here), but Katy Perry, as usual, took the note a step further, showing up in a glow-in-the-dark (yes, glow-in-the-dark) dress by CuteCircuit.

Sans Day Glow sticks, the dress actually works for me, minus the seemingly mismatched jeweled necklace. A blend of medieval fair maiden and romance novel, it oozes femininity. But once the switch was turned on – thanks to small iPod batteries apparently – she went from ball to rave and that thigh-high slit instantly became trashy, not sexy.

But that’s just my opinion. What do you guys think of Perry’s choice? Thumbs up or down? And who do you think looked the best last night? My vote is for Jennifer Lopez, who stepped out in a jaw-dropping Zuhair Murad gown. Sound off below!

I don’t think the lights add anything to the ensemble, but they don’t take much away, either. I like the dress a lot.

So desperate for attention. A few years ago, she would’ve been on “Where Are They Now?” but she’s able to keep her untalented @$$ in the public eye somehow. She must pay her publicist a ton of dough.

Word. She reminds me of a Christmas tree. All those are trying to pull a Gaga those days. Insecure much? This dress just says: “Desperately seeking attention”. Sometimes less is more.

What’s untalented about her? She writes a lot of her own music. She’s not Whitney Houston, but she’s a capable singer IMO. The dress is a bit wild, but it is the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s annual gala. Seems appropriate when you put the dress in context.

        @Miss Talk
Katy Perry was dressing in ridiculous outfits months and months before GaGas album was out or people even knew who she was. Apparently every female in the world cant step out of her house without trying to be like Lady GaG now.

    • twilight is a joke

Actually, I really didn’t mind the fact that her dress lit up. It was the slit that kind of bothered me, and the fit of the bodice that REALLY bothered me. This could’ve been cool. Instead, it was just a flop. My favorites of the night were Naomi Watts, Diane Kruger, Sienna Miller (almost too much, but not quite), Gwen Stefani, Zoe Saldana, Chloe Sevigny, and Nicole Ritchie. My worsts are January Jones, Blake Lively, and Christina Hendricks, who looked just plain scary.

If anything the light-up effect is so subtle that it doesn’t add much and ends up being pointless.

I kinda looks like the sun is coming in through some vertical blinds and hitting her dress.

You can definitely tell Katy is having fun by wearing this dress. It’s ok, as there are worse offenders on the carpet from that event (*cough* Kristen Stewart *cough*). And I agree, J.Lo looked amazing in that dress, as well as Rachel Bilson’s frock I could see myself wearing, I like it so much.

  • Lynn

Yuck. I’m a huge fan of avant-garde looks at this event, but this one is just plain weird and ugly.

  • Brandy

Well, its different…really its not the over bearing…I think its kinda cool…Katy can pull stuff like that off!!!

    • pthomas

This picture is not bad the other I saw made the lights looks kinda yellow green and that was awful.

  • Madd

I really liked Gwen’s look. I think Anne Hathaway unfortunately wore a gown Princess Sparkle (aka Taylor Swift) already wore.

    • pthomas

both Anne and Gwen looked fabulous. They both have a very sophisticated sense of style. Taylor Swift is a lovely girl – but all too often she looks like a little girl playing dress up. She just has no depth or personality to her – and mostly due to her age.

      • marrymyfriend

        Love her marrymyfriend

  • wg

Love it – it’s so TRON!

  • pthomas

That is the best I have seen Jennifer Lopez look in a couple of years – she looked great not like she was trying to compete with the 20 year olds.

  • Diane

If the bodice had actually fit I would have liked this dress. As it was, it looked like the dress was a size to big

While we’re discussing the Met Gala, I’d like to include an open letter to Tina Fey:

Dear Tina, I adore you. You have a slammin’ figure no matter how many donuts Liz Lemon says she’s had. I also have high admiration for YSL. But who the eff let you out of the house in that jumpsuit? It looks like someone rummaged through NASA’s surplus store, cut off the sleeves, and put pleats on the hips to make them extra big. Don’t do that again: 1. You deserve better clothes. 2. Listen to your instincts. 3. Leave the poorly fitted jumpsuits to Tyra’s panel appearances on Top Model.

    Yours,
    val

And lighten up on the eye makeup.

  • Bruna

The outfit screams Vegas and not New York in anyway. Pretty much sums up Katy Perry as an ‘artist,’ too.

  • Mary

Emma Watson stole the show. Taylor was pretty but lacked the red carpet presence that Emma has. (They are the same age)

    • Gene

Emma needs to stand up straight.

    • dizzy

Yeah, I would have liked to have seen Taylor in something more dramatic and elegant. She’s such a sweet girl, but she could have made more of a presence.

And, I also do like how Emma looked! She’s so pretty.

    • Celia

Emma Watson was gorgeous and she sure knows how to work the red carpet. She looked amazing! She was my best dressed of the night followed by Marion Cotillard and then Kate Bosworth.

  • Sara

Katy’s dress is fugly, with or without the lights – although the lights add that certain “Barbie” element my clothes have been missing. Katy always looks like she’s trying SO HARD to be sexy/edgy/trendy/avant-garde but it comes off so fake.

  • Skippy

I like it. It’s different and since she’s the poster girl for attention-grabbing different ensembles, I think it works for her. It wouldn’t work for me, but I think it works for her.

    • LB

i think that would be gaga, actually =-)

  • stevenjaba

The dress makes her waist look thick and cuts off her leg in a completely awkward way. Ugly, and it’s got nothing to do with the lighting gimmick.
