'The Hobbit' on track (hopefully) for 2012 release

deltoroImage Credit: Nick Wall/WireImage.comTolkien aficionados, movie lovers, fans of small, furry-footed humanoids, and nerds of every persuasion have been salivating for years over any tiny morsel of gossip and speculation regarding the big-budget adaptation of The Hobbit. Now, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, comes the encouraging news that the first installment of The Hobbit, which Guillermo del Toro is on board to direct, has indeed been scheduled by Warner Bros. for release in December 2012, with the concluding installment to come in December 2013. (Some Hobbit-watchers may have been thrown into a panic earlier when IMAX mistakenly suggested the first movie would come out in 2013.) Now, granted, there is no firm start date for production yet — the screenwriting team, including del Toro and The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson — is still toiling away on the script. But any Hobbit news is good Hobbit news, right?

What do you think, PopWatchers? You’ve waited this long — can you hold out until 2012?

Yes! But why is it taking this long?!?

Any bets on when they announce it’s being released in 3-D?

    • Zeddicus “Zedd” Zu’l Zorander

All I know is that Craig Horner would make an awesome Bilbo – LONG LIVE THE SEEKER!!!!!!!!!

      • aughra

Duude. You’ve gotta get over the end of the Seeker! Besides, Horner’s too tall to be a Hobbit.

Now, Craig Parker as Thranduil, the Mirkwood Elven King–I’m all over that!

      • Zeddicus “Zedd” Zu’l Zorander

@aughra – I will, someday, and as for craig horner, he is only slightly taller than sean astin is. And I am sure WETA can pull off the illusion

      • waya

Wrong Craig – we need Craig Parker in this! I liked Haldir way better then legolas in LOTR. Prequel is one way to bring him back. ;o)

    • 2-D FTW!

Please don’t let this be in 3-D. Please don’t let this be in 3-D. Please don’t let this be in 3-D…

      • Mark

please don’t let it be in 3-D, please don’t let it be in 3-D!!!

      • Tre S

AGREED! 3D is goona be so dated soon….again…

      • frostysnowman

Agreed – we do not want this movie to be in 3D!

  • Dee

WOOHOO!!! I’ll wait as long as I have to just to see this really come to fruition. It’s going to rock.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

yes yes YES!!! Feel so much better now!!

  • NOOOOO!!!!!

unfortunatly thats the same month the world ends so we wont be able to enjoy it

    • info

I was thinking the same thing…LOL. We might see the first installment but will never get to the second half.

    • Bobby

The worst that will or could happen 2012 is a twin sun or Brown Dwarf rips thru our little sweet spot. It happens every 3600 years try a little Humans surrived then we will again. As for the movie don’t hold your breath as they are bleeding this thing to death and you will all be disappointed. [;0(

      • Jim Beam

Yea? Twice before? Every 3600 years? Where have I been? Just who has this information any why? The government must be living in a shell becuse they don’t seem to know of this even with all that C–p up in space. Bring on the movie it is worth waiting for any way,I am so bored with END OF THE WORLD poop.

  • john

the world better not end before the movie comes out

  • pastafarian

So is the rule you must look like a Hobbit to direct “The Hobbit”? I’m a fan and all, and they’re great directors, but between Peter Jackson and Guillermo up there, they both lean to the scruffy beardy side a bit.

    • Madd

      Well, Peter Jackson’s lost….some weight.

      • California

The person pictured is not Peter Jackson, that’s Guillermo del Toro, the director.

    • RB

Scruffy beards are dwarves, not hobbits. It’s scruffy feet you’re looking for.

    • aughra

No, but it helps, apparently. Worked for Peter Jackson the first time….

  • Kate

Oh man, its too bad the world is ending on December 21, 2012. Guess we aren’t going to get to see the second half.

    • info

LOL..thought the same thing when I read it!

  • Celia

Awesome!! I can’t wait!! I still don’t understand WHY they split that 200 page book into two films, but I still can’t wait to see it.

    • topher

Supposedly they’re filling in some additional backstory not in the books. I ain’t complaining.

      • Celia

I didn’t know that. Sounds pretty cool.
I wonder when we will get an official cast list?

      • Katja

Oooh that would be nice. I wouldn’t mind seeing Gandalf take on the Necromancer.

      • frostysnowman

I heard they might be adding some relevant details from some of the appendices from the books and maybe from the Silmarillion.

    • Brad

It’s so they can make more money. The 1977 animated version was an hour and fifteen minutes. I plan on watching both movies for free off the internet.

      • Terry

I take it that you mean pirated. I can’t stand scum like you. I would truly love it if the powers that be were able to catch thieves like you or somehow attatch a virus to these pirated films so when you try to watch, it completely effs up your computer. I’ve been into this arguement with my brother and his defense is pretty much that he’s not the one who put it on the computer, which is stupid. That’s why there is a charge called possession of stolen property. If you don’t want to pay for it, don’t watch it. I mean, how big a loser are you that you can’t afford to go see a movie or at the very least, come up with a dollar to rent it when it hits dvd.

  • Roxy

it’s funny though; I got a magazing 2 or 3 years ago that had all these movie realease dates [i got it for a harry potter article]. They had claimed the Hobbit was coming out this year, a month from now. They won’t have even started production! Then again, as long as its a good movie and they don’t murder the book like Spiderwick, I’d wait till 2015.

  • brett

I just hope it’s before December 21st, heh.

  • Adwina Lambert

But December 2012 would be the end of the world according to the Mayans!!?!?!?!! tee-hee I have to sing their theme song too just like in 2012!!! tee-hee!

  • J.

Most make happen sooner. Me need Hobbits.

  • Andrew

    I can wait till then.

  • Kelsey

I hope we’re all joking about the 2012 nonsense. ;-)
If it’s going to come out in Dec. 2012 and be GOOD, they better get started on it.

    • Jackie

Rest assured, the world will not end in 2012. 2012 is when the Mayan calendar resets itself.

  • Dinjab

I hope the worldwide release is in Dec. 2012. I will not stay in this country with a President-elect Palin.

    • Kevin

I don’t think you have to worry about that. There are A LOT of stupid people in this country, but they’re not THAT stupid.

      • Jackie

I think you’re underestimating the stupidity of Americans (and I am an American, so I don’t exclude myself, although I’m not stupid enough to ever vote for Palin). The movie WILL be fabulous, though, I have no doubt about that.

    • Charles

What a bunch of crap that has nothing at all to do with the movie. People who make these kind of blow hard comments irritate me. Remember all the people who screeched about how they were going to leave the country if Bush was reelected or when Obama won? They never went anywhere and neither are you, so knock off the nonsense ramblings. Oh by the way, The Hobbit will rock.
