'Vampire Diaries' recap: Miss Mystic Falls

Vampire-Diaries-MissMisticFallsImage Credit: Bob Mahoney/The CWI’ve read some comments that accused me of being I’m anti-Stefan. Let me clear this up: I’m not. It’s just that Damon is more fun. It’s not Paul Wesley’s fault. He and his abs are wonderful. It’s that present-day Stefan, for the story’s sake, has been one-note until last night. At first, I thought it was going to be a case of be careful what you wish for. I was not enjoying Closet Blood Junkie Stefan. That must have been tricky for Wesley to play: To put it in Pretty in Pink terms (because why wouldn’t I?), he had to go from a Blane to a Steff plus have a jaunty walk — and it couldn’t be a perfect transformation because we all knew he was out of control. When Stefan asked Elena if she wanted him “brooding and tortured” as they learned the forbidden touch dance I shouted YES! at my TV. But then, we actually got to the Miss Mystic Falls competition, and that all changed…

So Damon had busted Stefan as being back on the human sauce. (I don’t get why Stefan would keep bags of blood IN HIS CAR, but I suppose it helped establish what an addict he’d become, and the visual made me think of a normal teen’s car being littered with McDonald’s wrappers.) You could argue Damon told Elena about Stefan drinking again so he could drive a wedge between them. And I’m sure that’s a bonus. But I genuinely believe he wanted her help in reining Stefan in before he did something that would out them as vampires. Like say, break a mirror in a Founders Hall bathroom, then kidnap panicky contestant Amber and talk to her like a crazy man (or a John who hires a prostitute and doesn’t want to get busy) in the parking lot before biting her. That scene, when “freaking hungry” Stefan finally collected himself and was the kind of coldly seductive that almost had you feeling his fingers caressing your neck, made Closet Blood Junkie Stefan worth it.

Stefan: I don’t hurt people. I don’t do that. I’m the good brother.

Amber (under compulsion not to be afraid): Do you want to hurt me?

Stefan: I want to kill you. I want to rip into your skin and I want to feed on your blood. Under your skin, pulsating, flowing. Your carotid artery right there. If you puncture this just right you can control the blood flow. Takes practice but it doesn’t have to make a mess. You don’t have to waste any.

Amber: What’s stopping you?

Stefan: If I do this, if I give in, there’s no going back.

Amber: Then don’t.

Stefan: I just want one taste. That’s all I need. I just want one taste.

Amber: One taste.

AND BITE!

While Stefan was busy snacking on Amber like she was a box of Junior Mints (you can only stand a few at a time, but you keep coming back until the box is empty), Damon stepped in as Elena’s escort for the try-not-to-fall-walking-down-the-stairs-then-dance portion of the Miss Mystic Falls competition. That first smile Damon cracked when they were dancing — sa-woon. Elena definitely enjoyed herself. But then we established last week that Damon is the better dancer of the two. I thought Elena had looked up in the distance and seen Stefan with Amber, but she must not have. It wasn’t until Caroline’s mother and Johnathan showed Damon the mirror that Damon grabbed Elena so they could look for Stefan. By this time, Stefan had told Amber to be afraid and run from him — then had another change of heart. He’d just taken what was to be the kill bite, when they found him. Wesley did a good job of acting like a rabid, trapped animal tossing Damon aside when he tried to calm him and hunkering down to stand his ground. Newly returned Bonnie had followed Damon and Elena and used her powers to give Stefan a headache that snapped him back to reality. Then, with blood covering his mouth like melted chocolate, he ran.

Props to Elena for not deserting Stefan. She feels responsible since she made him drink her blood to save the both of them. She showed up at the Salvatore home (nice mirror shot!), and Stefan went all Brando trying to tell her to leave. What she’d seen was the real him. There was no going back. She told him she wouldn’t give up, that she believed in him, and he shoved her against the wall. Then, he apologized and broke down, sobbing into her neck and finally admitting, “I don’t know what’s happening to me.” I should have guessed that Elena — “It’s okay. It’s okay. You’re gonna be okay.” –  was carrying a vervain-filled syringe, but I didn’t. That was awesome. Not Buffy-kissing-Angel-before-putting-a-sword-through-him-and-sending-him-to-a-hell-dimension-to-save-the-world awesome — totally just got chills typing that! — but awesome.

Back to Bonnie: It was good to have her back, and pissed. After avoiding Elena and refusing to look at Stefan, she finally told Elena that she blamed the Salvatore brothers for Grams’ death — she died to keep the vampires in the tomb and now they’re out anyway. She wasn’t going to make Elena choose between her and Stefan, but she was making a decision for herself — she won’t be hanging with them. I think that was a fair reaction.

In other news: Caroline won the Mystic Falls competition, which she totally deserved. The girl is involved in everything, and wanted to win fairly — she encouraged Elena, who had the sympathy vote, to stay in the competition because it meant so much to her mother. Caroline being a nice person = always welcome. I just wish Matt hadn’t had to work — I would have liked to see him in a suit. Props to the writers for having that one chick say, “Just because my DUI made my community service mandatory doesn’t mean I was any less committed,” during the interview montage. Hilarious.

Anna showed up to watch the Miss Mystic Falls competition because “sometimes you have to wear uncomfortable heels to fit in.” Jeremy cleaned up nicely, didn’t he?! He told Anna he’d read Elena’s diary and that he was only half mad she’d covered up what happened to Vicki — he didn’t want to remember Vicki as someone who wanted to hurt him. Anna said she would never hurt him. And I believe her. Aunt Jenna made herself useful twice this episode! She styled Elena’s hair and told Johnathan that Jeremy’s friend was Anna, who was new in town with her mother, Pearl. This should get interesting… Johnathan already suspects that Jeremy thinks vamps are real since they talked about the family journals, and now he’s friendly with the vamp whose mom stole something from the old Johnathan. How will he use Jeremy?

Johnathan had tried to blackmail Damon into helping him retrieve old Johnathan’s invention for him and Isobel. (They’d thought it’d burned with Pearl in the tomb, but when they found out the vamps were out, they knew it was back in play.) Damon listened to him until Johnathan said he didn’t know Pearl — which meant he didn’t know Katherine. If Johnathan wanted to tell the council Damon was a vampire, fine. He’d just kill them all. Damon had told Anna to tell Pearl that Johnathan would be looking for her. (“I don’t know what it is, but I don’t want him to have it.” Ha.) And Pearl showed up and gave the object to Damon as a peace-offering. She’d thought it was the vampire detector when she’d stolen it from Johnathan, but clearly it wasn’t. She has no idea what it is either, but she wants to stay in Mystic Falls and sees now that Damon, while a loose cannon, is better than the tomb vamps. Classy move, Pearl. Maybe there’s hope for my Damon-Pearl sex scene yet!

Your turn. What did you think of the episode, hungry Stefan, and Damon’s eyebrows (they were in overdrive last night!)? Can you believe they do a month of these Founders events?

I think this may have been my favorite episode yet. Loved the Damon an dElena dancing scene – I watched that twice, and Stefan was delightfully creepy. I’m glad they’re doing something different with his character.

    • Via

ITA – I especially loved the way the show has come full circle with the Salvatore brothers with Stefan being locked away full of vervain instead of Damon. I gasped when they said we only have 2 eps until the finale; this show is great and I am going to miss it during hiatus.

      • CAPTAIN ASIA

WOW – people who watch this show and twilight are morons, PLEASE DON’T REPRODUCE OR VOTE. This also affirms that as smart as women want to claim they are, this proves most women are idiots or at least have retarded fantasies. – oh look its the ball!!

      • Jessica

I love that a guy called “Captain Asia” is commenting on us being ridiculous. Get a life.

      • Jade

        meeeeee 2

      • miss k

        I second that.

      • miss k

Just want to clarify- I second (or I guess third) Jessica’s comment. :)

    • J

Your name is Captain Asia and WE are ridiculous? Also, why do you take the time to comment when its something you feel is so dumb? Attention seek much?

    • 0210bonie

this truly adds more excitement to the show aside from the salvatores give me the drool bodies… i salivate everytime one of them shows abs or tightfitting undershirts… wowowowowowowow

  • Ramury

Last nights episode was a good one. It was SO good to see Bonnie back, and mad at the Sal Bros… I hope they explore that. And I must agree, Blood Junkie Stefan is much more fun than regular Stefan… until he starts biting people.

  • Kaye

I loved this episode. Well to be fair I love ALL the episodes. I’m glad that Stefan is having issues. I was afraid he was in danger of being a one-note character. I hope they don’t keep him this way for too long but that when he starts controlling the blood lust that they keep just a bit of bad in him. Damon is the absolute best. I also wondered whether he was trying to drive a bit of a wedge between Elena and Stefan also. It is pretty obvious now that he has feelings for Elena especially when at the end of the episode he sat down to keep Elena company after he had said he was going to leave. I’m not going to be happy when the show is on summer hiatus. Whatever am I to do?

    • mary q contrary

      Seriously. NO SUMMER HIATUS!!!!!!!!

    • Kate

Watch True Blood on the hiatus. Then Vampire Diaries picks up again when that ends. A full year of vamp-drama.

      • sabrina W

kate u’ve nailed it,that’s how i roll vamp-wise since my awakening in 08 to vamp-lore again:
        true blood s1 / twilight
true blood s2 / new moon
        the vamp diaries / eclipse
true blood s3….forever every single day of forever! lol man how hot how painfully beautiful did damon look at the bottom of the stairs waiting for elena swoon worthy!

    • TheObserver

loved that they played ‘Clocks’ by Coldplay in the background at the mystic falls event… love the music choices for the show and I am totally stoked that Bonnie is back!!! and with all her witchy powers in tact though its seems Team Bonnie+Damon has been shot to :(

  • L.

The episode was awesome! I have to admit Elena and Damon looked hot together. I love how Stefan is battling with who he really is but trying to keep it together for Elena and trying not to prove Damon right. Very exciting stuff last night.

  • meredith

I didnt think they were going to cross that line of Stefan biting someone, but I’m glad they did! One of the things that makes this show so good is that the writers have no hesitation in making big plot twists.

  • lilirose

Last night was awesome. The chemistry between Elena and Damon was hot!!! I can’t believe I am saying this since I like Elena and Stefan. But there is no denying that I was giddy like a school girl when they were dancing.

  • Wendy

I think Paul Wesley gets off the hook a bit too easily. This is how he was chosen to play Stefan, dull and anti-social. I think back to that Football episode right at the start of the series. Here, Stefan could have been shown with this desire to be normal (not just fool Elena) and a real friendship b/w him and Matt could have been made, but instead Paul Wesley played him him so smug (and he’s admit that’s how he plays) that of course Stefan is unlikable, and that’s not the writers’ fault. The actor has his part to play and Paul Wesley made some bad choices with this character.

He was a bit over-the-top. I mean compared this was the fun and dancing Vicki got when Damon killed her. At Damon got to know her a bit. Plus we were a bit invested in Vicki while I think they let Stefan off the hook too easily by having bite a character we’ve never seen before and never see again. There was nothing subtle about Paul Wesley’s performance last night. Also, how are hard is it too poke fun at the dullest of dull events like rehearsals for old-timey dance? Wow Stefan, you are rebel without a cause.

    • mary q contrary

You, my dear, need a lesson in coherence. And a good talking to about the writer/director/actor dynamic happening on a television show. You make the mistake of assuming that these people let Paul Wesley have that much control over the portrayal of his character. It’s the job of the episode’s director to make final calls on any overacting and underacting, and I can assure you that they have their hands pretty deep in that cookie jar. And now I bid you adieu, because I refuse to even dignify your silly notion that Paul Wesley is writing his own lines with a response.

    • Roselyn

      What are you talking about???

  • Stef

I love the dynamic between Elena and Damon. It’s so much more mature than the one between her and Stefan. It’s interesting that Stefan is really the more volatile vamp out of the brothers. Damon’s ruthless, yes, but calculated and with purpose. Stefan is a loose cannon. And all this time we thought it was the other way around! Can’t wait to see where it goes. :)

    • mary q contrary

Yes! Perfectly said. I’m loving this role reversal, too. Can’t wait to see Stefan’s tortured face when he realizes he might be losing Elena to his brother!

  • Wendy

It’s 20-something into this series and we have to spend over half the episode centered of the protagonist just to get us interested in his storyline and give the actor these big dramatic scenes because that’s the only way we’ll even notice him?

    • lex

idk about that. u shudnt use ur own opinions to colour the opinions of others. i’ve liked stefan from the start and to date he is my favourite. he really sucks me in (haha that was unintentional lol)i never thought he was one note but that he was just… controlled. these extremes make him relateable. who makes perfect decisions? who is perfectly evil or cool and always says the right thing? we often overreact and overcompensate. well i kno i do and that’s wat i love about stefan he is so imperfect and he pretends he’s not, like alot of us do.

and dont let me start with damon. ugh i think i’m the only person on this planet who cant stand him. ian is great. but damon is a piece of s*** bastard. and all yall think he’s so cool but i dont. and thas ok bc we r all entitled to our opinions. just bc u didnt like stefan dont assume it’s a general thing. i think paul does great w/ innuendos and he really makes u feel the emotion right in ur gut. in any case tvd is great whether u like stefan or not :)

      • Sam

lex, im totally on the same page as you! I am completely drawn to Stefan’s character more than Damon’s. I love Ian’s portrayal but I think Paul has a lot more to deal with. If anyone is a one-note character its Damon. He’s in a self-absorbing party mode majority of the time. Only thinking of himself and never about the consequence. And why does Damon now care for his brother? Cus now they may get caught? How did he not care b4 when he went all crazy in the beginning of the series killing how many innocent ppl? And only when Stefan was kidnapped and being tortured did Damon finally step up to be the big brother that he is?! It took 145 years to have that happen? Stefan has put up with his older bro for so long and allowed him to be his selfish self and stood by to clean up Damon’s messes. For so long Stefan was acting like the adult while Damon the immature child. Now Stefan is coming to terms how he’s kept himself away for soo many years from him being what he really is (a predator), its not going to be controlled overnight. It takes a lot to deal with addiction and I think the way Stefan is going is very real. You don’t think your doing anything bad and that you are in complete control, Paul totally gave that. And I loved the end scene with Elena in his bedroom where he went all ballistic on her to scare her away – such a typical male response, to make the girl back off than deal with the real issue at hand. And I loved how he broke down in the end. There are brief moments when an addict realizes what they have become and they need help. Stefan has been very true to himself this whole time acknowledging his mistakes & urges to Elena. That is what you call maturity, exactly what Damon hasn’t been.

      • Jade

Damon started out as a immature, partying vampire out of spite to Stefan, and Stefan stood by and cleaned up his mess. And they’ve been like that for 145 years, and it’s been kind of like a security blanket for Damon. He can mess around because Stefan will try to keep it under control BECAUSE he’s so in control. Now that Stefan has lost that control Damon’s now forced to buck up and be a responsible character and clean up after Stefan, almost parallel with Matt and his mom – the child has to be the adult and take care of his parent.

Also, Damon constantly had the upper hand over everyone – piss him off, he’ll kill you. And Stefan couldn’t stop him because he didn’t drink human blood. But suddenly there’s tons of older, stronger vampires around who he can’t just threaten with violence, and he has to be careful about everything. He sill wants to find Katherine and he needs to keep things in control to get to her.

I love Paul in the scene in the woods. He even got that crazy look in his eyes when he’s caught, blood dripping from his mouth. Perfect.

    • Roselyn

      What?

  • Chris

I LOVED this ep!!!!!! If I’m not mistaken, I thought I saw something between Damon and Elana for just a second…..hmmm

  • Megan

This show always keeps me entertained. The dance scene with Elena and Damon was super sexy. And I like crazy crazing Stefan much better

  • Lisa

Best episode yet!! Loved Stefan being an actual vampire. And loved Damon being a gentleman, stepping in as Elena’s escort.

  • Fridge

I really liked last night’s episode. I thought it did a great deal in moving along the season towards the finale. I’m really interested in seeing what happens with uncle John. There is something so smarmy about that guy, but I can’t wait to find out more and I love that David Anders is playing the part–I can’t think of anyone else who can make a character have both smarm and charm, sometimes in the same episode, as well as Anders can. I also love the change in the dynamics of Damon and Stefan. Sometimes I forget that Damon’s supposed to be the older brother, but these last few epidsodes it’s been nice to see him step up and be the responsible one. I’m not really sure if I agree with the whole “blood junkie Stefan isn’t hot”. I don’t really see how that’s a valid point, are junkies that are out of control SUPPOSED to be hot?

    • mary q contrary

Nope, not usually. I’m pretty sure most out of control junkies are hot messes, and not in a good way.

  • MB

    Is Amanda dead?

    • Christie

No, the sheriff said they took her to the hospital and she would probably make it.

      • Wendy

$5 bet right now we don’t see again (although maybe she comes back for revenge for a few episode in a later season)

  • CC

I loved the dance between Damon and Elena – they are definitely into each other. The longer it takes for Stefan to heal, the closer these two are going to get. When he sat down with Elena at the end, I can just imagine him going into full mack mode on Elena while his brother is knocked out in the cell – after all, he has had centuries of practice; the girl doesn’t stand a chance. I don’t think that anything is going to really happen between them this season, but next session, I think this is going to be a full on love triangle.
