Sandra Bullock will be returning her Razzie, but won't be destroying all extant copies of 'All About Steve'

sandra-bullockImage Credit: Dan Steinberg/AP ImagesSandra Bullock was recently asked to return the Razzie she picked up for her rather ignominious turn in All About Steve. Apparently, since the awards show coordinators didn’t know she was going to show up in person to receive her award, they had to give her the original Razzie prototype instead of the cheap $5 knockoff “winners” usually get, and now they want it back. What should have been a quiet little exchange turned into a minor frenzy over nothing much at all, thanks to tabloid press, but the issue may finally be put to rest now Bullock’s rep has told E! News that the Oscar-winner will indeed be returning her less-than-honorary award.

“We were never contacted by them to return the Razzie,” Bullock’s publicist, Cheryl Maisel, told E!. “I contacted them yesterday to check the validity of the story and was only told then that we had been given the wrong award. We will be returning the Razzie to them shortly.”

My question is: Isn’t this the one award which you’d be more than happy for someone to rescind? Does this brief kerfuffle, out of the harsh glare of awards season and with a newly super-sympathetic Bullock, make you reconsider the choice of her as Razzies’ Worst Actress? Any other candidates you think deserved it more?

Sandra Bullock isn’t the first Razzies winner to actually appear and accept their award, and wouldn’t you think the Razzies would be overjoyed – and prepared – to have a recipient actually appear anyway? I’m afraid I’m going to have to award a Razzie for Worst Planning of an Awards Show to the Razzies for this colossal WTF moment.

Halle Berry accepted her Razzie in person for Catwoman.

    • Q

Tom Green did too. Not sure for what, but hey, he’s Tom Green – it ought to be a Lifetime Lack of Achievement Award.

      • Crys

that is the funniest thing I’ve ever read..lmao

      • Catherine

        Best line!

      • mama-c

Q:thanx for the great laugh-needed that

      • Roland

Thanks for the chuckle, Q. It was spot-on. Tom Green is as funny as a migraine.

      • Dave

Great line, Q. They MUST make that award happen next year!

      • Marvin

You hit the nail on th head. Love it.

      • Sara

        Too funny!!!!

The Razzies get ENORMOUS publicity during Awards season — if they can’t parlay that PR into enough money to actually make their damn awards, they should fire somebody… and get a marketing dept.

      Pathetic form, Razzies, just pathetic.

    • levelheaded

@Flyer, I agree, not to mention Sandra stated publicly that she would be there to accept it.

    • Lucy

      Well said

  • Katie R.

I agree with Flyer. So they give her an award that is basically a huge insult, and then, when she has a good enough sense of humor to show up and accept it, they ask her to return it? Very bad look, Razzies. You should have been prepared with the $5 knockoff.

Also, the Razzie people should have contacted her representatives directly instead of apparently griping to the tabloids. Doesn’t Sandra have more important things going on right now?

    • graeme

I agree. I’m disgusted by the Razzies are their press-whoring ways. The president sent an email telling people to vote for Bullock after she said she would show up, and then you release a press statement saying she has to return it? Why didn’t you just contact Sandra quietly and ask for it back? There was no need to make this public other than to get further publicity for the Razzies.

      • Hello??!!

Well, graeme, because then people wouldn’t be discussing it on Ew.

    • Catherine

Katie, although I liked your comment this “Doesn’t Sandra have more important things going on right now?” is just not necessary. Will we have to bring this up whenever we talk about her? The fastest the public and the media gets past this the better for everybody.

    • Lizzie

      Agreed. Great post!

  • flora

    Much ado about nothing.

    • Fauna

      Yeah!
This story doesn’t belong here. It should be on an entertainment website….

      • aa

        LOL

    • just curious what other people think

      Agreed!

    • TorontoTom

I hear that Bullock is having a bowel movement tomorrow and she might give herself a bikini wax. I’m sure all the responsible news outlets will cover both events with the necessary integrity and thoroughness.

  • Generation Gossip

This makes me feel even worse for her. She’s already so embattled and now these people add to the drama surrounding her by going to the tabloids instead of doing things the right way, and for what? A little more publicity because they want to be on tv? For a $5 statue? Disgraceful.

    Check Out GenerationGossip.com

    • OhGoodGrief

I highly doubt this is making her life any worse in any way. At worst, it’s a minor hassle that someone else will surely tend to for her.

  • Sean S.

To me it seems as though the Razzie people might just be trying to garner a little extra press mileage out of Bullock’s current situation. Bad form, Razzies.

    • Q

I agree – but good form for Sandra to just politely offer its return.

  • therealeverton

Another problem with the Razzies. First of all they hardly ever actually choose anything near the worst film etc, just a fairly bad one that they can get big publicity to. Secondly they don’t see the difference between a “bad” character, and a character that is perhaps unlikable as opposed to an actual bad performance. Bullock’s character in All About Steve is unconventional and hence, for some reason, not easy to like; it’s the point of the film. That people didn’t find it easy to like / relate to her character is actually proof that she gave a very good performance. It was also a risky one for a “star”. Playing someone that uncool and saying to audiences people are different and we shouldn’t be so judgmental, especially when they harm no one.

Of course the quality of the film itself is another matter but I just don’t see her performance as bad, it seemed to be exactly what the script called for and as an actress / actor that’s about all you can do.

    • Laura

Exactly. It’s very clear that the only reason they gave her the Razzie is because of all the publicity it would bring them because she was also nominated for an Oscar. NOT because she actually gave the worst performance of the year. Now they’ve sunk even lower with this stunt. For shame, Razzies.

    • lise

haha im pretty sure im the only one that actually enjoyed that movie ithought sandra was great !!! it should be a compliment when your asked to return your worst actress award !!!!

    • Chels725

My thoughts exactly. Sandra’s performance was good but the character was bad. Megan Fox or Kristen Stewart should’ve gotten it. They are just awful.

  • John

The knockoffs cost FIVE dollars to make? You mean the Razzies couldn’t have just made a few to have lying around in case a good-humored recipient showed up to accept it? What, would that have bankrupt them? Sheesh!

  • Ernest

The razzie should have gone to Beyonce for her lousy turn in Obsessed

  • Jenn

This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. After she was so cool and classy enough to show up and laugh at herself, and they ask for the award back??? And not only do they ask for it back, which is bad enough in and of itself, but they ask for it back when she is in the middle of a huge personal crisis? I don’t get it.

    • OhGoodGrief

Really. THIS is the MOST ridiculous think you have EVER heard? Really? It was stupid of them not to have a knock off available to give her. And clearly bad form to have a tabloid inform her they want it back (to trade for another) but I think in the great scheme of things, it isn’t a big deal. As far as her huge personal crisis, you can’t seriously think this has any bearing on her ability to cope and move on, can you? Give the woman some credit. People deal with serious personal crises and annoying stuff at the same time every day. Besides, I’m sure some assistant or another will take care of it and “poor” Sandra won’t have to have the added “stress.” It stinks that her marriage turned out the way it did and was turned into tabloid fodder. She surely didn’t deserve it. But, this is a non-issue.

    • B Monteet

      Ditto.

  • Mike-Buddy

What cheap asses the razzies are, the least they can do is cough up a better award than a cheap $5 award, I mean pee wee soccer teams get better awards! But I think it’s cool that Sandy can get best and worst awards who can do that, she probably didn’t deserve her razzie but she got it and the razzies handled it poorly definetly!

    • Catherine

… on the other hand, wouldn’t it be against the whole idea if the Razzie award was a piece worth something? Let’s not forget that these awards go for lousy performances. Given the money they earn (our money, that is, we pay for movies), or even given nothing at all, they deserve a good laugh every once in a while. But this doesn’t change the fact that the Razzies just made a bad move by accepting the award back.

  • katfish

…..and they say Iran may have nuclear weapons……

  • MG

Just shows that the Razzie folks are really cheap, lame pricks – not only do they only bitch and whine and like stupid dorks wait for people’s mistakes, but they also can’t even muster up some dignity to give away their crappy “award.” Such pathetic, miserable cesspool-dwelling bottom-feeders.

  • MARSHA

I THOUGHT THE MOVIE WAS FUNNY! SHE IS A WONDERFUL PERSON THAT DESERVES BETTER THAN A RAZZIE AND/OR A JESSIE!

    • Catherine

DID YOU? WOW! NEXT TIME I’LL WATCH IT ON CAPS MAYBE IT WILL BE BETTER

      • mama-c

funny – quite snarky but funny

  • dgh

I would keep it if I was her if they want to be smarta**es and hand out these awards then she should keep. It might also do her good to post a video of her breaking it on funnyordie.com!!!!!

  • J

Whatever, the Razzies are a jokey kind of thing, and Bullock is just a good sport. There’s no story here.
