Image Credit: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage.comWell, that was fast. Just three days after it was announced Patton Oswalt would star in Matthew Broderick’s comedy pilot Beach Lane, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the actor is leaving the series following a table read. The publication’s source tells them he was offered another role on the show, but it’s “unclear” if he is interested. (EW’s calls to Oswalt’s rep were not immediately returned.)
To make matters worse, this news comes on the heels of the demise of his Broadway show Lips Together, Teeth Apart, which was postponed after Megan Mullally exited the show. (The show would have marked his Broadway debut.) Come on, Hollywood: Oswalt seems to be a great guy. He’s funny, sharp, and as big of a fan of Joss Whedon as all of us here at EW. So why can’t this guy catch a break this month?
Who else is disappointed to hear that Oswalt might be out of Beach Lane?

this seriously sucks, oswalt is such a great comedian, he dosent deserve whats happening to him this month
HUMAN TARGET IS AN AWESOME SHOW
He’s funny and all but it’s not like he lost a leg. He gets plenty of “breaks” – I know a lot of actors who are really slogging & they’re not getting EW pity parties.
Is this Sarno of Caprica?
He’s freakishly ugly. Somebody put a bag over him!!
Oh my god, you are sooooo funny. Like, Ann Coulter-funny.
He was great in “Big Fan” too. Love me some Patton!
Maybe he’s getting a little too big for his head after Ratatouille.
Maybe it’s because he’s a Satanist. Seriously, he is …
there’s a difference between atheist and satanist.
Seriously, a HUGE difference. If an atheist doesn’t belive in god, then they don’t belive in the devil either. I’m sick of atheists being branded as “devil worshippers” or people who lack morals. Just because someone does not subscribe to religion or the belief in a higher being, does not mean they’re evil. Religious people are not the most kind-hearted, tolerant people (some anyway). Morals are religion are NOT mutually exclusive.
sorry I meant “Morals AND religion are not mutually exclusive.”
Wait, the king of queens guy? Never found him funny.
do you mean Kevin James?
No, they mean Patton. he was a buddy of Kevin James.
Oswalt has a recurring role as Neil on Showtime’s “United States of Tara.”
this guy is hilarious and can actually act, anyone who doubts that can watch big fan and see how his performance drove that great movie
Bummer, this is really disheartening. Patton is extremely talented; one of the funniest, sharpest comics around and he has got good acting chops too. He was phenomenal in Big Fan. I will continue to follow everything he does.
Screw that, Oswalt belongs on the standup tour. His standup is hilarious!
I am disappointed. Patton Oswalt is really funny and thanks to his performance in Big Fan, he can actually act pretty well. Why get rid of him?
Patton Oswalt (and Rosemarie DeWitt) are heartbreakingly wonderful in United States of Tara, and anyone that thinks this man isn’t talented has to watch the last episode. Such a shame.
I’ve NEVER found this guy funny and while I haven’t “Big Fan”, his acting has always been stiff and conspicuous–you can tell he’s trying too hard and it comes off as amateurish.
“…and while I haven’t SEEN ‘Big Fan’…”
Broderick must be a “sky cake” fan…
