As EW reported yesterday, the Gossip Girl cutie has a scheduling conflict with the increasingly troubled remake, which is set to start shooting this summer — the same time he is set to be in production on his CW show. Julianne Hough is still set as the female lead, but the script has been rewritten by Hustle & Flow‘s Craig Brewer and is director-less after This Is It‘s Kenny Ortega dropped out. All of that said, the show must go on, and those wildly unrealistic gymnastic-dance sequences in warehouses aren’t going to do themselves. This thing needs a Kevin Bacon.
The studio behind the movie, Paramount, is looking to fill the role with an unknown, even considering a nationwide cast call. But we’ll ignore that for the moment and think up some at-least-a-little-knowns we’d like to see in Ren McCormick’s shoes. Maybe Glee‘s Cory Monteith could save this poor town from lack of dancing? A lesser-known Gossip Girl player like soon-to-be Captain America co-star Sebastian Stan, who started his career singing, dancing, and acting at summer camp? Or maybe Zac Efron will reconsider now that he’s put some distance between this and High School Musical?

They should just scrap this deathtrap now. Nobody wants to see it. Unless it’s in 3D! Nothing like paying to see a crotch shoved in your face to “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls … yes, that song should be used in this remake.

I agree. But since they’re obviously going to do it…I think the problem is with the girl they’ve chosen. Julianne is just boring. They should start there and then it will be easier for them find a guy to match her.

I was never good with the Chace Crawford decision, so i say bring on anyone else.
Having grown up in the 80s with the original, this to me is a sign that this movie should not be remade. Some things just need to be left alone and in their original glory.

LOL unless they’ve changed the plot of Footloose so dramatically that the Ren character is no longer any kind of dancer, there’s no use in fantasy casting Cory Monteith. Lord bless him and I love him on Glee, but the dude can’t dance and he’s not that great a singer. However….speaking of suspension of disbelief, I’m going to fantasy cast Maksim Chmerkovskiy, purely because he looks the sullen “bad boy” and is, um, kind of yummy and a good dancer. And totally not too old for the part… right?
