When you think back on last years save, when Kris Allen was singing jumping, and Danny and Anoop and Allison were chanting SAVE HIM, and then the whole crowd was in it, and Then Matt cried, and everyone rushed the stage… and compare it to this year’s.., it makes you realize that they not oly wasted the save, but they wasted an arguably GREAT potential television moment.
I also think last year’s group were an incredibly close group of friends. This season I barely believe any of their relationships.
Last year’s finalists seemed like good friends, at least while they were still on tour together. This year it looks like there are certain cliques, like Andrew/Lee, Crystal/Didi, Lacey/Paige, etc.
The reason might be because the contestants this season aren’t living together. They all live in separate apartments.
Last season, the top 13 lived in a mansion meaning they had more time to get to know one another.

Las year they were really close, they were really das when someone was voted off (remebmer when adam was crying because allison was voted off?)
They were a familly and really suported each other!
Now they are trying to kame lee and andrew the “new kradam”
Everyone likes Siobhan better than anyone else! The reason they did not cheer is because that save should not have been used for that arrogant fatty! SIOBHAN will win the competition she’ll sell more records than that poser Adam Lambert! I hate how everyone thinks that there are better singers than Bonbon are you people deaf?!? Respect Siobhan more she is such a great beautiful person inside and out you should read about her life! Having said that, I personally think Crystal is by far the best of this seasons talent, then Lee and Siobhan. Vocally, Siobhan is not that strong but she is better than the rest. this is just my oipinion. and I can’t wait for this coming week. I am sure Mr Lambert will bring great things to the show, as always!

I root for Siobhan and think she has a guaranteed shot at a great new life now, and a significant chance at a better than decent career in music or on stage in theater. But I really like Crystal. I really like Casey and Lee. Liking Crystal does not mean I have to dislike others. My dislike, I like to think – has to be earned..as Big Mike has done.

If anything, his behavior AFTER the Save only reinforced my negatives on the guy. Chest-thumping arrogance, not thanking the judges or telling fans he’ll do his best? Pluses? I think not. Even the dozen camera pans to his somewhat desperate and trashy-looking wife made me less sympathetic, not more. Would my husband be helped in his job if I showed up all desperate and crying-ugly saying he should get what he wants?

The other thing is that a lot of audience just woke up to knowing most people are like them on Big Mike’s music – outdated self-indulgent soul-love music no one wants to listen to anymore let alone buy. Sung by an inauthentic guy with good vocal ability.
I am supposed to vote for him over more enjoyable and less repulsive contestants simply because they have less sympathy or because he is the only black left?

Matt’s save was great television – and lightening in a bottle. You can’t reproduce that at will, as we saw this week. This class hasn’t gelled, 19 already knows who they might sign, the judges aren’t really judging anymore. Only Jason Derulo benefitted from Idol this week.And Didgeridoo Guy.

Big Mike is a great singer. The only reason almost everyone on here is pissed the judges saved him is because of his stereotypical young black male bravado. Or as some would call it “swag” or “swagger.” Admit it. If big Mike was an ex-marine with a humble and grateful attitude everyone would love him. He is a talented singer.

I’m with Steph. All I know is that there is no way I would buy a record by Big Mike. And I don’t look forward to hearing what he is going to sing on the Idol stage each week. Unlike Lee and Crystal, his performances lack authenticity. There’s just something fake about him and the way he sings. Or to put it in layman’s terms: I just find his performances boring. Now with Lee, he can have a few pitch problems, but I still find his performance a heckuva more interesting than Big Mike’s. Same goes for Crystal who forgot a few words in this past week’s performance. Let me tell you this. I have downloaded 3 itunes from Lee and 3 from Crystal and zero from Big Mike.
One more thing. I still think the few pitch problems that Lee sang in “Hey Jude” on stage were intentional. He probably did it for a live performance effect. Because if you listen to his itune “studio” version–he sings it pitch perfect. He could’ve easily sang it the same way on stage.

I actually agree with this, and I’m a middle-aged white woman. I was just saying the same thing to my husband last night. I don’t really enjoy Mike’s personality, but if I close my eyes and listen to his vocal, he might be the best singer this year. I don’t think people are consciously racist, but I do think there is misunderstanding of where he is coming from.

Tyler – Word! I have liked most Crystal performances and have them on DVD as well as Casey and Lee and Siobhan’s stuff. I have downloaded 1 Crystal, 2 Lee, and 4 Siobhan songs – so you can guess what order I have my faves in. Siobhans last one “Across the Universe” is inspired by Fiona Apple’s slowed down rework and is gorgeous on Itunes. Highly recommended, as is the Casey James “Jealous guy” my friend has.
Completely disagree with Dave. When I hear a performance, I close my eyes and try to think how much I would enjoy hearing it in the car. Mike’s voice doesn’t cut it. All I can picture is turning the channel after the first thirty seconds.
Big Mike managed *one* good, cheese-free song during the whole Idol run so far. He didn’t deserve the ‘save’, but the producers are looking for any way possible to jazz up a deeply dull season. The upside? At least this week, we’ll hardly be able to avoid getting rid of our Tim Urban-induced headache.

Thank you, Dave, for pointing out the underlying factors in many folks’ dislike of Mike. I liked him alright until Beatles’ week, when I floved his ‘Eleanor Rigby’ actually! So I was shocked when he was at the bottom, and it pleased me that he was saved. I found his save much more moving than Matt’s from last year, too.
But you’re so right – too many folks look at black men in very (even if unconsciously) stereotypical ways.
That’s exactly my point, last year’s save was such an emotional point in IDOL history — everyone chanted save in the audience for Matt Giraud even all the contestants — NONE OF THAT THIS YEAR BECAUSE HE DIDN”T DESERVE TO BE SAVED. Mike is so arrogant that it’s almost like he didn’t give two thoughts that he WOULDN”T BE SAVED. Did he cry? It made the whole save just useless in my opinion. and I think it was wasted on someone who is not that great of a singer and not someone who were are emotionally invested in. And I wonder why they didn’t save Didi instead if they were gonna do it this early since she has proven herself more than BIG MIKE HAS.I can only hope that he will be in the bottom two again with andrew. Different is good, Siobhan isn’t being anyone but herself and that’s so obvious. Her voice is natrual talent (as is Crystal’s) and those high pitch notes she hits…unbelivable! I think you the reason no one likes her style is because no one really follows who they are anymore.
The first time I saw her perform I totally dismissed her, but after she sung “Think” I so saw the talent. I admire her for not being anyone but herself and it’s horriable that someone of you sit her and put her down like you do, I’m fourteen and seeing someone like that be themselves is cool. Siobhan is one of a kind, if you don’t like her then don’t hate on her. Crystal is amazing too, so same goes for her on trashing her style.

People only like her because of the Paint it Black performance, which was only good because some brilliant person made the set look amazing. Take that away, and she’s barely a mediocre singer.
Aside from the screaming (which is kinda impressive), Siobhan actually has a very beautiful tone to her voice. The most beautiful sound of the entire lot of contestants this season. She just has to work on some technical issues.

Siobhan is just like Lily. Completely average, but her “I wear offbeat clothing to show I am a special outsider” schtick is getting her pretty far. It’s scary how easy it is to hide mediocrity with “rebel” outfits. Siobhan still being in the race is more evidence of tweeners dominating the voting process. She’s more teflon than Tim is.

Siobhan is not unique. Her clothing choices just make you think that. You can find 100 Siobhans with high school caliber voices and the old petticoats and combat boots look at any urban bar. Her look is actually very old fashioned 80s punk and not at all creative.
Siobhan is trying wayyyyyyy to hard to look cool and differerent. Often times she just looks ridiculous.

I watch the show to see some talented people get a chance. All I see on this page is HATE.. I mean the problem is that all of them have talent.. Some are more consistent than others, and even Tim has some talent but just needs more life to tie to his singing. This week I realized we are at the point I will miss any of them as they go.

My husband got himself some serious TLC after he blurted out that he just realized that Siobhan was hot – “almost as hot as you when I met you in college!” (The girls in skirts and go-go boots provoked this epiphany!)
Major TLC that night because it was an honest blurt-out AND covered him praising my fave at the same time.
Personal anecdote aside, don’t just think that Siobhan, Casey, Tim and under them Katie and Lee are not benefiting from being good-looking, nice people.
Add that industry pros are saying that Casey and Siobhan have the talent to go with the looks. Bringing up that dread phrase – marketability potential.
And reality is that if Tim Urban can act better than he can sing – he just might be coming to a TV show. Tim and his abs are the 3rd most downloaded pic on the Internet in the last month. (My GF who teaches said it was being sent phone to phone at school like wildfire two weeks ago and disrupting classes).

Totally agree. Although I can somewhat understand the hype with Crystal. Lee is a frat boy rocker who — I’m sorry — sounds like every other gruff sounding rocker. I don’t really like Casey, but he’s the only male on stage I (sort of) believe. Oh, and Andrew on a good day which are few and far between.

Mr Slezack talked about the fact he was no longer smiling when he was sent to the bottom three. It was his first time and he had one of the best performances the previous night, what did you expect? Did you watch Katie Stevens’s face the first times she was in the bottom three? Poor girl looked like she was about to pass out.
Big Mike may have zero chance to win but who has a real one in Tim Urban’s world, seriously.
Difference between Crystal and Siobhan = Crystal is actually talented and doesn’t rely on ostentatious showiness to get good reviews.
Difference between Crystal & Siobahn = Siobhan can sing and do something interesting with a song and is hot, Crystal does the same thing every, week which is mediocre karaoke, and is a fat smelly hippie with filthy dreads and missing teeth!

Honestly, you could argue that Siobhan does the same thing each week. The shrieking, the strange clothes and arrangment. She is smug, arrogant, pretentious (she never saw Idol before auditioning? Yeah Right!) and she can’t take constructive criticism from the judges without talking back and correcting them. The comments I made were just an easy target as is her large behind, small chest and ugly face.
The main difference, vocals aside, between Siobhan and Crystal is that Siobhan is pretty and marketable, she would sing anything the label would suggest and she has an open mind which is important in the show business; On the other hand, Crystal knows and shows exactly what kind of material she wants to record and those would only top charts on Hot Adult Top 40. And (that is pretty harsh but still) she’s not pretty or girly, how is she gonna appeal a younger audience without extensions, Covergirl and new veeners? I don’t see that happen.
Difference is KATIE is going to win and both of this girls won’t!

No, Stephanie you are sure NOT the only one that like both gals. And people trying to play the “I love X, so I must hate person Y” game in dumb partisanship should start with the knowledge that Siobhan and Crystal consider themselves friends and confidents and have immense respect for each others talent and hard work. Both have commented that they find the other absolute A-quality personalities with a sweet, generous nature. And Didi in her interviews after leaving agreed. As did Paige.
I am absolutely captivated by Siobhan as a developing talent and want her as my fave NOT to win, but finish 2nd so she isn’t forced to churn out product before she is ready (see Jordan Sparks..) But I like Crystal and about the only beefs I have with all things Crystal are things outside her influence. The judges making her their pet. Some Crystal fans that when you praise Crystal – taking it to mean that you too agree there is only Crystal – and the insignificant dwarfs she is forced to suffer and compete against.
Besides liking Siobhan a whole lot, and Crystal almost as much – I can’t really say a bad word about Lee and Casey. None of those 4 is perfect, I can find weaknesses and bad performances from each as well as great stuff.
Even Tim, who can’t sing and who I’d never vote for…is the kind of young man I’d love to know. I wish him luck and hope he can act better than he can sing – because if he can, he has a real future as a solid-character, charismatic guy.
About the only people I believe have earned their dislike are “Big Mike” and Katie. It’s not all about the vocals. I think MIke is a phony, arrogant, and I hate his outdated, cheesy music.
Katie probably doesn’t deserve my dislike, she is young and has a good voice and probably has lots of friends – but she has been “programmed” by some adults – and comes with some real authenticity issues. I just can’t stand her robotic, souless, scripted answers to questions.
Give me a break. With or without the judges’ feedback, Lee and Crystal would still be my favorites. Even when they make mistakes, they’re still 10x better than the rest of them. They are not overrated.

Lee and Crystal definitely had some awkward moments during their performances, but you have to hand it to them for upping the interest factor this week. And Siobhan was once again out of tune and extremely nasal. That’s just not going to record well, no matter how many times you push the track through the auto-tuner.

I agree. Sometimes I like Siobhan. But I couldn’t stand her performance this week. She gets very nasal when she sings low, and she kinda ruined Across the Universe for me, and that’s my favorite Beatles song. I can’t believe the judges liked her performance.
Magnus does get nasal in the lower register, but that can be trained away. Remember she started this as a teenager with few professional voice lessons if any – work in local theater and hitting it as singer in a local rock band in her state last summer. And all that part-time because she had other work and family obligations.
And despite that – has still shown great progress and promise.
Her “Across the Universe” is note perfect and called by one pro “a gorgeous building on Fiona Apples rework of the Beatles tune – noting the early nasal sound – but saying the tone and power in mid and high register were more than enough to make up for that (and the same woman who said that nasality is a correctable flaw that will go away very soon as Magnus gets more polished)”
Well, that’s clearly flase, since the studio version was avaliable within 12 hours of broadcast each week, and Siobhan sounds great on them.
I don’t think the judges realized that Crystal messed up the lyrics because they probably didn’t know the actual lyrics. I honestly didn’t even realize it until I saw your recap! Then again my love for Bow!Er!Sox! may have rendered me completely warped to even care!

He got monkey finger he shoot coca-cola is not exactly coherent. Having said that, I agree that the judges just reinforce the perception of bias when they don’t criticize their favorites for mistakes made.
Give me a break! They are classic lyrics to one of the all time coolest songs. That is the style of lyrics the Beatles used often, I Am The Walrus, Lucy In The Sky, Strawberry Fields etc., it’s called having an imagination and using creativity. Just because they are not black and white, cut and dry type lyrics it’s ok for Crystal to screw them up and not even have it mentioned?
Personally I don’t think missing a lyric is that big of a deal in the big picture, I’ve seen lots of pros do it (Ozzy, Steven Tyler, Mick Jagger to name a few) but that’s one of the things the judges make a big deal about so if it’s big deal to them then they should say something when it happens no matter who does it.
It is obvious that the producers have “chosen” Crystal and have told the judges to praise whatever she does cause they know that heavily influences voting.
Sorry, though I do love the song, I didn’t notice because she ‘made it work’. And the recovery was splendsational. It’s like when a band messes up their own lyrics at a show and simply power through it to the delight of the audience. To me (for me — for you, for me), it’s the sign of a real performer and not a vocal regurgitation machine.

I didn’t either. You know this is starting to look like another season where the judges pick a favorite and over-whorship them. It doesn’t help the contestant……it happened to Melinda Doolittle and BAM she went home……it happened last year to Adam (who I actually liked) and BAM he lost the Idol Crown. So judges if you really like a certain contestant stop with the over praise……because they might go home for it!
I sort of agree but then again Melinda, Adam, and now Crystal are really great singers it’s not like they are pulling compliments out of their as.ses just for the sake of it. They have been well earned and justified praises IMO. It would be unfair to sell them short.
I think Adam’s second place finish had a lot more to do with America’s homophobia than the judges’ pimping. I remember early on seeing the judges were so clearly in the Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, and Adam Lambert pimping mode that I did initially resist him. However, while Lil never did a single thing to warrant their pimping and Danny was competent but boring, Adam completely won me over with the strength of his performing. It was like Paige this season, Simon could tell me how great her voice was all he wanted but my ears said otherwise. Crystal, pimp her or don’t pimp her, she’s just an amazing performer and so I’m going to pay attention. Melinda, also, not a victim of pimping. Her voice was technically perfect, but she still peaked in the semi-finals and never delivered anything that particularly awesome – it was easier to get behind Jordin with her “watching the young kid come of age” type story than Melinda, that’s all.
I hope your right and she does get sent home.

Honestly, I don’t think the judges are paying attention half the time during performances. Remember Paulagate? I agree they should all be treated the same and called out for mistakes. That being said, I do think Crystal covered pretty well. I still liked the overall performance.

Ugh, I still can’t stand her after her comment during Rolling Stones week. “I have no choice but to be old.” The Rolling Stones? OLD? Seriously, the girl needs to get a clue.
That was in response to the judges telling her to be “young”. The rolling stones ARE old, no they’re ancient. Come on, she’s a 17 year old on television with millions watching. If she doesn’t give the most eloquent answers I think we should just try to get up there ourselves and give interesting answers off the top of our heads.
You can’t call their music old. If anything, it’s classic. Her age is no excuse. Last year, Allison was only 17 years old, but she was mature, funny, and awesome!
The Rolling Stones music is awesome and is classic but the only musician older then them is Beethoven.
When Ryan Seacrest said to Katie “she has grown up since last week”, he was – obviously – referring to her heels and the fact they were almost the same height.

Katie gave the best performance of the night? Not even by a long shot. Even though she sang it in key, I found her performance old-fashioned and boring. I got no emotional reaction from it at all. There is no way young Americans will buy her records if that’s the way they’re going to sound. Now if she’s aiming towards the Susan Boyle crowd–she may have a chance.

I can’t say I know why the judges saved Mike other than for entertainment/drama purposes, but I think they all know Mike is not going to win AI. And although Tim did well this week, his overall repertoire has been poor. Maybe he didn’t deserve to go home this week, but as a whole he needs to go. And Aaron — perfect example of why AI shouldn’t allow 16 year olds on the show. Don’t get me wrong… the kid is good. But he’s so young and he’s dwindling. Everyone knows this is between Crystal, Siobhan, Casey, and Lee with Crystal taking the win. I wish we could just skip to the end and be done with it. Last season I was rooting for so many people, this season I’m just annoyed.
At 9:45 I told my friend, “Mark my words. They will not use the save on Mike.” Uh. The way this season has been going, how could I not see the writing on the wall? Very well. Mark my words, we will lose a front-runner that now cannot be saved.
Awww I love the big luge. Big Mike is really a sweet man. He does come off over confident but hey, it is all an act. He is closest with Crystal and if you watch them two interact you will see another side of Mike.
I feel that way about Mike, too, and I think people like Jessica only says Andrew (of all people) is better because of her dislike. Mike is the only one who brings a SHOW on that stage. With that, he seems to ALWAYS congratulatory with the contestants and give them high praises and comforts them when their down. To not see that shows an unnecessary blinding of hate that I think is borderline uncalled for. You don’t really know him as a human being, so how can any of us judge him like that?

Um, Anita, you may want to go back and listen to the episode again. Michael specifically pointed out that he really liked Mike’s performance this week. Nothing wrong with having a favorite – I’m sure you have one too, and it’s obviously not the same as Slezak’s. The fact of his predictions not being as on target this year has more to do with the bizarre voting going on than it does with Michael being off – his reviews are generally right on track.

Yeah, he loved Allison, Melinda Doolittle, Fantasia, Adam Lambert, Kris Allen… I’ll give you that it’s a mostly female collection, but I’ll take any help he can provide against all the tween girls voting for their favorite hot guy rather than a good singer, who sometimes may not be a hottie and/or may have ovaries. Anyways, all of the above contestants actually have above average talent in one or more areas: vocals, creativity, performance, or heartfelt interpretation. I’m not sure you can convince me that Fantasia, for example, has the most beautiful voice, but damn if that woman doesn’t sing the hell out of everything she’s given like she’s feeling it to her core. And Kris Allen is a man with an average singing voice but great musical creativity and heartfelt performances. OH and the big thing – you mentioned Katie Stevens – that girl can veer unpleasantly off-pitch, she’s not yet a great performer, she has shown little to no musical ability or creativity in song selection and arrangement – these are not problems that Slezak’s favorites usually run into. I’m sorry, I’m a huge Slezak fan so there’s probably some bias going on, but I also honestly trust his opinion. Sometimes we disagree on specific performances, but I always agree with the people he picks as his favorites.

I’m so glad that there are others who find Tim appealing, in a strange, illogical way. I guess I like supporting the underdog. He’s actually a good singer. In addition, he seems humble and wholesome, like a cute camp counselor bringing happiness to the camp fire sing-along! LOL
Just to stress this once more, we’ve seen plenty of Idol contestants go home when people start to feel complacent as if a contestant obviously has a spot in the next round. Nothing is guaranteed. So keep voting for Timmy so that he can make it to the top 8 to be mentored by Adam Lamebert and learn how to shove a guy’s crotch in his face during a performance.
Tim Urban was declared safe tonight and not even in the bottom 3. Victory! Great work everyone. The only problem? Big Mike was supposed to be sent home, yet instead the judges used their lame save. That wasn’t a shock, no one likes Big Mike. But now, he’ll be safe next week. And Aaron and Andrew were in the bottom, which will encourage people to vote for them.
This puts Tim in a very dangerous position. We’ll almost certainly lose him next week unless we can pull off a miracle. So while we can celebrate victory tonight, next Tuesday we’ll have to pull out all the stops to make sure Tim isn’t the bottom vote getter or the second lowest vote getter. Can we do it? We sure can if we really put our minds to it and continue to recruit Worsters. So please, celebrate tonight, but try to recruit as many Worsters as you can tomorrow. We’ll be fighting an uphill battle. But if anyone can inspire us, it’s Super Tim, who can dodge eliminations like a speeding bullet.
Tim reminds me of a guy in a band who is singing with a guitar to a bunch of preschoolkids – he’d be great in a group that was like the Wiggles.
