'Vampire Diaries' recap: Let the right one in

Vampire-Diaries-RightImage Credit: Bob Mahoney/The CWHmmm, Stefan gets tortured, while shirtless, and I still just kinda wanna talk about Damon? Even though the idea of Stefan’s new “hunger” for human blood makes me nervous, I can see that he does need a character shake up. He can’t just always be decent.

So Stefan went hunting for squirrel to get his strength back after the attack from Frederick. Problem: A big, bad-CGI storm had hit Mystic Falls, so Frederick and his mutiny-loving minions could also roam about the forest with their hoods up. Frederick staked Stefan and took him back to the house, which anti-revenge/pro-patience Pearl had left for the day to go do reconnaissance in town so she could assess who’s on vervain. When Stefan didn’t return or answer his cell, Damon got worried and went to see snarky Elena, who was avoiding his calls because, you know, he turned her biological mother into a vampire and, in her words, is “a self-serving psychopath with no redeeming qualities.” That’s so not true, and she knows it. Damon has many redeeming qualities, such as his abilities to bulls— someone (he told Alaric Pearl could help him find his wife so he’d help Damon get into the house) and to cut through the crap (loved how he finally told Elena she couldn’t help him rescue Stefan because he couldn’t protect her and she’d get them all killed, and how he just snapped the human homeowner’s neck).

I am seriously hoping we’ve seen the beginning of a beautiful (love/hate) friendship between Damon and Alaric. Alaric and his vervain stakes saved Damon’s Bourne-esque butt in the house, and I think he’ll tolerate Damon’s existence now that he’s seen Damon do some good rescuing Stefan and showing some vaguely human emotion. (Damon would know what Elena was going through having her lover trapped, wouldn’t he?) My favorite scene of the episode was definitely Damon and Alaric at the bar afterwards.

Damon: That was fun. Oh, don’t look at me like that. I know you hate me. Guess what? Everyone hates me. But you can’t deny we were bad-ass.

Alaric stands to leave, and punches him in the face.

Damon (to bartender): It happens.

Man, his loneliness makes me sad. If I were in Mystic Falls, I would be his drinking buddy. I feel like he’d tell great stories when he’s drunk, and I’m a good, excitable listener.

Of course, Elena didn’t just stay in the car during Operation Save Stefan. But it’s a good thing: She was able to break into the basement because the vampire watching Stefan and Harper (who’d gotten staked in the legs for trying to help Stefan), had figured out how to work an iPod and couldn’t hear her breaking the glass. He finally noticed her, but Damon got him before he could hurt her. “Are you insane?” he asked Elena. Yes, but he put her to work freeing Stefan from the vervain-soaked ropes he was hanging from, and Stefan asked her to free Harper, who he hadn’t allowed Damon to kill (“Whatever”– Damon). She was supposed to get Stefan out of there while Damon caused a distraction. Which he did by getting his butt kicked. The speedy fight scenes always look cool.

Meanwhile, Elena and Stefan fell trying to get back to the car and she cut her hand. We all knew where this was headed — that Stefan would be drinking from her for strength — but it took Elena a while to figure it out. After she locked the car doors (such an unnecessary thing to do when vamps have superstrength, but a nice human touch), she realized the keys were gone. Cue Frederick ripping Stefan out of the car. As Frederick staked Stefan, Elena nailed him with one of Alaric’s vervain weapons. Stefan was unresponsive until Elena, seeing Frederick begin to stir, forced him to drink from her wrist. Did anyone find that at all sexy? It was shot a little too cheesily for my taste, so they must not have wanted us to. Stefan played dead until Frederick tried to stake him again. Then he vamped out (did his eyebrows change?) and killed Frederick dead, dead, dead while snarling. Not hot. At all. Pity.

Elena knows it was her idea to save Stefan with her blood, so she’s trying not to judge him for losing control, but we haven’t seen them kiss after that. They were talking about it when Jeremy called to tell her that Vicki’s body had been found. How did I not see that coming? I kept thinking there had to be a reason we were seeing Caroline stranded in the storm, but I didn’t think she’d fall down a riverbank while trying to get a cell signal and see Vicki’s arm. Poor Matt. There’s no way his mother, who’d just stepped up and tried to make him dinner, is gonna keep it together now. (Will she let hungry, hungry Stefan feed on her?!) I’m guessing we’re supposed to think that Elena rushing to Matt’s side (and Matt hugging her right after he’d told Caroline he wanted to be alone), means she’ll start to wonder whether she should get back with him because he’s normal. Perhaps they will get closer, but I think he’ll turn on her when he finds out she’s known Vicki’s fate.

Speaking of Vicki, are we thinking an Anna rampage now that she’s figured out Jeremy only wanted to be turned because he thought Vicki was a vamp and wanted to be with her? Jeremy is such a tool, but his biceps are sure looking good. I was digging Anna in this episode. She didn’t want to turn Jeremy because everything he knows about vampires he learned from Netflix. (Technically, it was the Internet, Anna. He was too lazy to watch Buffy.) She said there are four reasons vamps turn people: they’re in love, they’re bored, they’re in need of minions, or they want revenge. She was hoping he’d grow to love her, which is why she refused his vervain bracelet when he offered it to her — she wanted to know that whatever was between them was real. How awesome would it be if she now tried to turn him for revenge, because he no longer wants it?

Damon returned home to find Stefan on the floor surrounded by a few blood bags. Honestly, it took me a minute to decide whether he was somehow trying to get Elena’s blood OUT of his system (the blood on his mouth could have been from biting his own wrist) or binging on the soccer mom Damon had in the fridge. The preview for next week’s episode, in which Elena says Stefan’s not himself, Damon argues that maybe Stefan spent too long not being himself, and Stefan speaks of his hunger, made me think the latter.

How are you feeling about Stefan’s hunger? Does it make you nervous or excited? Where do you see Elena and Stefan headed now? Are you ready to see more of Tyler? (I’ll try to keep an open mind.) And are you, too, secretly hoping that we’ll eventually see some sexual tension between Pearl and Damon? I doubt it — she doesn’t respect him, he finds her “scary” — but a girl can dream. Maybe he’ll find her power intoxicating (she saved him and Alaric by calling off the other vamps when she got home), and she’ll be turned on one night and he’ll be drunk, lonely, and available. Hello, it’s been 145 years for Pearl. She needs some. And that would definitely get her on Damon’s good side. If he has one.

This show is so much better than it should be. But more Alaric/Damon butt-kicking, and less Elena/Stefan moping. And get that annoying Caroline chick off my TV please.

    • Alex

Yes, PLEASE GET CAROLINE oFF THE SHOW!!

Please turn Alaric into a werewolf – just to see Damon’s face when he meets his mtach. More Underworld type werewolf and less Siberian Husky.

    • Nikki

Is this show literally almost pitch black for everyone, or is there something wrong with my tv only when this show is on? lol
I yell every week to turn the damn lights on! It’s really frustrating.
Otherwise, LOVE this show. I get excited about it every week. Can Ian Somerhalder BE any more beautiful??!!

      • crispy

No, you’re right… it’s really dark. We turn our lights off when watching… it helps!

      • brittany

I was just thinking the same thing last night, but I turned the brightness up on my TV and it was a bit better

      • Bibi

I was going to mention this as I rewound the last scene and still couldn’t figure it out. Had to read the recap.

      • Lindsay

HA! You’re totally right. They pull together the best-looking cast on TV and then dim the lights SO LOW that we can’t even see them!

      • TB

Lol I had the same problem with my tv 2!! Liked the episode, wasn’t 1 of my favorite but I liked that we are moving into more people knowing about the vamps

  • amanda

Loved last nights episode! I was a little angry at Elana for being so “judgy” towards Stefan when they were finally home. It’s not like she didn’t know he IS a vampire, just trying to be a good one. She was the one that gave him her blood. I’m also looking forward to a possible little Anna “attack” towards Jeremy. All in all, good episode! BTW – Loved Alaric coming to the rescue to Damon but then hitting him at the end.

  • ChrisV

Caroline has really grown on me. The scene with her watching the hug was perfect.

    • ShannonW

She is just such a tragic character. As a girl who never gets the guy but is friends with the girl who does, I truly feel for Caroline. Elena needs to be a bit more sensitive.

  • Cheri

Let’s face it – if not for Damon, this show would not be must see TV. Ian makes all the rest of this CW fluff go down smooth.
Every week I love him more and more. “I get it…he lifts you up where you belong.” LMAO!
I hear people complaining that Stefan should be the “star” of this show, but he just isn’t. Perhaps showing him with more than just 1 emotion/facial expression would help.
I am digging the Alaric/Damon team…more please. I like seeing Damon and Stefan working together as well. Elena needs to stop being so insufferable…can she really blame Damon for turning her birth Mom? He didn’t know Elena. He didn’t “wrong her”. The chick wanted to be turned! I’m really getting tired of her character. (Almost as much as Lux – the ultimate I’m the center of the univers character – on Life Unexpected.)
Am I the only one who thinks Gale Harold needs to turn up as a long lost relative to Damon and Stefan? I think he and Ian could be related!

    • CindyC.

You have planted the seed in my head! Gale Harold NEEDS to be on this show. Right. Now.

    • Cheri

Yes! But Gale Harold of Queer As Folk – not the neutered version of him on Desperate Housewives.

      • Cheri

Hey author – Mandi B! Are you reading this?! What do you think? Let make it happen. :o )

      • CindyC.

Totally agree there. I miss Brian Kinney in so many ways it should be illegal.

      • Heidi

I originally fought for Gale to get on Tru Blood but once they hired someone else to be Alcide, I think finding him a sexy role here would be the cherry on top to an already sexy series

    • ash

OOOOOOH that would make this show perfect!

    • val

I always felt indifferent towards Elena but this episode kind of made me go more for not liking her. She was sooo annoying in this episode. She was judgemental of both Damon and Stefan but I think she had no right to be judgemental of Stefan at all. You could totally see it in her face that she was disappointed and freaked out by the way Stefan acted while in vampire mode. I mean, he’s a freaking vampire, what does she expect? Damon’s done A LOT worse. Not a big Elena fan unfortunately. If it wasn’t for Ian Somerhalder’s Damon and Kat

      • val

ugh it cut me off lol…I was saying Kat Graham’s Bonnie, I would hate every character on this show. Actually, I’m kind of starting to like Stefan…don’t kill me for saying it haha

  • Maisy

The post ass-kicking bar scene was also my favorite. I am liking Alaric more and more. I don’t think he was convinced by Damon to undertake the rescue mission, I think he was motivated by Elena and her connection to his wife. In any case, that was brilliant teamwork.
I am confused as to why there was a Vicki body to be found. She was staked, she was a vampire, I thought they turned to ash on their final demise. ?
I am honestly relieved that we will get to see some conflict for Stefan, SOMETHING to give his character some depth and pathos. I get the sense that he will conquer it quickly because he’s the hero type but I hope it stretches over at least a few episodes. And bring on the Lockwoods! I am excited to see what Pearl does with them.

    • kelcy

I was wondering about the body too. She was totally ash last time we saw Vicky, right?

      • LilysMom

Nope not at all! When she was staked by Stefan, she dropped to the ground and became sort of mummified. Then Damon said he would dispose of the body.

      • DRS

I think the ash thing is just what we assume because of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In the Vampire Diaries world, the vampires seem to petrify and therefore leave behind remains.

    • Bart

in the Vamptire Diaries world, only very old vampires turn to ash. This definitely comes into play in the penultimate scene in book 3 (which I won’t give away). I also think they may have made mention of it at some other point…

      • Christie

I haven’t read the books but I thought that we’d seen older vamps turn to ash on the show when staked. The vamp (Frederick’s female sidekick) that Stefan staked last week was another body to be disposed of. Has Damon just been dumping the bodies in the river? [I can't see him going to all the work of digging grves.]

  • Pamela

oh yeah I agree. I at first was a huge Stefan fan, but now its all Damon!!!! (thrown in with some Alaric) I do agree with Caroline, get her off of there…Where the hell is Bonnie? And Jeremy annoys me too. lol

    • crispy

I’ve been wondering about Bonnie too! Is she at band camp or something? And I’m still peeved they killed off Whitley!

      • Cheri

Oh – I would even PAY to watch an episode with very snarky guest star Spike teaming up with Damon! Sweeps anyone?

      • james

Lol…”Whitley”…her death kind of pissed me off too. Where the hell IS Bonnie, I was figuring she and that Black vampire were gonna start getting it on but she just up and disappeared!

    • Christie

Elena talked to Bonnie on her cell last week. She’s still out of town dealing with Grandma’s death.

  • CindyC.

LOVE Damon. “If I had a good side, not the way to get on it.” Priceless. He’s very quickly passing Spike as my favorite misunderstood, sexy, snarky vamp. And I agree, even when tortured and shirtless Stefan can’t compare.

    • JC

yes, damon makes the show so much better.

    • JesseJ

Typical… Women ALWAYS want the BAD BOY over he good guy… fact of life that entertainment media popularizes… so now I don’t feel bad that I did that to Sandra…..

  • erika

great episode. loved the damon and alaric teaming up thing. I ALSO LOVE THE WHOLE DAMON CARING FOR ELENA. DID ANYONE ELSE SEE ALARIC LOOK AT DAMON AND ELENA WHEN THEY WERE ARGUING ABOUT HER GOING TO SAVE STEFAN. HE WAS LIKE MMM SEXUAL TENSION HERE!DAMON AND ELENA ARE MY COUPLE FOR THIS SHOW! but i do feel bad for stefan!

    • Michelle

Alaric was totally picking up on the Damon/Elena vibes. Awesomeness!

    • Hillary

I noticed that, too. Mandi B seemed to gloss over it as Damon’s “crap-cutting” talk, but I think he actually cares and did not want to be distracted by her presence– also the camera cut to Alaric watching them both but looking particularly at Damon during the convo.

      • Zoey

I so agree! Alaric was picking up on some very obvious vibes between the two. And I think he was paying more attention to Damon because it was so human of him to care about Elena’s safety, and Alaric had only ever thought of Damon as this heartless monster.

  • Trenton

Alaric is awesome, which means he’s not long for this world. He’s an early 30′s actor on a show for teenagers…Either his wife is gonna 86 him or Catherine will…but I hope he goes out bad ass. Maybe Damon and him become friends and that forces Damon to finally get on the Catherine is an Uber-bit_ch bandwagon.

  • JC

    DAMON & ELENA!!!!!

    • Bec

Does no one like Anna and Jeremy together? I think they’re adorable, and I really do wish they were together and she turned him out of love…so sad. Oh, and I wish Caroline would just leave Matt. She deserves better than him.

      • Dawn

I was starting to really like them together too. I felt really bad for Anna when she realized he was only in it to try to find Vicki.

      • Rashida

I like them together and I really love Jeremy. I don’t get why he annoys people so much. His parents just died and because he doesn’t react like Elena he’s annoying? Plus he never got a chance to truly finish grieving over them or Vicki b/c Damon sucked out his grief. Of course he’s feeling lost.

  • Indy

For some reason most of the subplots for an episode tend to work in sync and if you feel one might be filler they throw you for a loop. It’s kind of refreshing.

    • Kaye

Oh, I completely agree. I think the way that they interweave everything is just… perfect. I’ve yet to really be bored by a subplot, which is so not normal for me! I love this ensemble cast, and I expect it to remain an ensemble cast! It’s true that Damon, like a lot of people, is my absolute favorite…

But I also love Caroline, Bonnie, Jeremy, Anna, Alaric, and even Jenna!

  • Michelle

If you’d have told me back in September that the show I would look forward to the most every week (aside from LOST) was going to be Vampire Diaries, I’d have said you were off your nut. I am continually blown away by the sheer awesomeness of this show. It’s well plotted, well written, suspenseful, dramatic and funny all at the same time. Damon is challenging Spike for my all time favorite vampire spot. I like Stefan too and am intrigued by his addiction. Damon looked worried; that can’t mean anything good. Elena is second only to Buffy herself for greatest vampire heroine. I know it was foolish for her to go into that house, but I have to admire her for it. You go, Elena!

I feel bad for Anna. Just when she thought that Jeremy was ready, she finds out that he was after Vicki all along. I hope she doesn’t join in Pearl’s vendetta against the Gilberts. :( Speaking of Pearl, woman is FIERCE. Love her.

I can’t really muster much sympathy for Vicki’s grieving loved ones. I never really liked her. Plus Matt’s running to Elena was kinda douchy. Caroline deserves better. But Tyler’s back! Now if we could get Bonnie back all would be right in the world! ;-)

    • CindyC.

I agree completely. I’m an avid TV watcher & fangirl in the highest order, and this show has taken me by storm this year. It’s consistently fantastic, which is all too rare in TV land.

      • DRS

I fear for season 2 though. The writers have done such a good job this year that my expectations are really high. I don’t see how they can keep it up. But my fingers are crossed for them.

      • crispy

Isn’t this show based on a book series? My guess is they have plenty of material to mine from the books for season 2.

      • Bart

        @crispy
the show is BASED on the books…but thus far the only real similarities seem to be the names of the characters and some of their traits. There are so many differences it’s almost pointless to keep track anymore. Not to mention that Elena’s best friend in he books isn’t in the show, and her 4 year old sister has been replaced with a teenage brother.

That being said, it keeps it very exciting and fresh for me…I loved the books and this is like getting a whole new set of stories…I’m loving it.

      • Kaye

        @Bart

I completely agree, of course, but I think what the other poster meant was that… if the writers ever seem stuck for inspiration, they have 5 perfectly awesome books sitting right there to go to for inspiration. Because they haven’t really touched on a lot of the plots within the book, I think that just makes it so much more exciting if they ever do decide to pull from the books! To me, it feels like this show probably won’t ever lose its momentum!

    • Jamie B.

I second all your thoughts!! With the exception of Elena, who to me seems seems to be all about herself & Stefan. I love Alaric, can’t wait to see how his story unfolds. But I’m MOST excited about David Anders storyline which starts this week (FINALLY!). I’m excited to see how Anna interacts with Jeremy going forward (if at all), what more Pearl has planned, Tyler and the full moon shown in the preview, and lastly I would like to say that I will miss Frederick (GH’s Nicholas #2). He seemed a somewhat-worthy adversary for Damon. Oh well, can’t wait to see what else is in store!!
Did anyone else read they’re going to have 9 (!!!!!) cliffhangers in the season finale??

  • TheObserver

First of all let me just say that, while I abhor torture and I am totally against it, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Frederick for stringing Stefan up half naked so I could ogle at his gloriously bare torso. Thank you Frederick; second, where is Bonnie? I’m missing Bonnie and I am now toally convinced that they are setting up Harper ( the vamp who tried to safe Stefan) as her love interest for when she returns. I like the idea of Stefan breaking bad a little bit and of Damon being the one who may have to keep him in check with the human blood drinking thing (my, how the tables have turned…and quickly too) Third, Caroline needs to understand that when two people have as much history between them as Elena and Matt do of course there’s gonna be that type of affection especially to comfort one another when something horrible happens to one or the other (i.e, Caroline needs to grow up a little and not take everything so personal because not everything is about her, vicki’s dead, people are sad) Fourth, could do without Tyler, he does nothing for me or the story for that matter; sorry. Fifth…I hope Damon is in some state of undress next week…he doesn’t have to be hooking up with anyone, he could just be getting dressed or getting out of the shower or any number of things that require inadequate clothing. Lastly, from the begining of the series I thought Jeremy would be turned because he seemed sorta lost and useless so its intersting to see how things with Anna will turn out especially now that Pearl knows.
P.S what does it mean that I was toally amused by Damon snapping that poor woman neck like a breadstick?

    • Michelle

That you’re “a self-serving psychopath with no redeeming qualities”? I kid, of course! I loved the neck snapping too!

      • chattypatra

Didn’t he ask her first whether or not she had family living with her inside the house? I’m not sure if he was then going to spare her had the answer been yes or if he wanted to know whether or not he’d have to kill more people but, hey, that was nice of him, right? Bwahahahahahaha! Oh, Ian, you make Damon so hot, and I’ve never liked a bad boy before. Should I repent?

  • Lisa

Without Damon the show wouldn’t be worth watching. Yea there’s some tension with Elena and Damon but she isn’t enough for Damon. Let them have a fling, it’ll be fun to watch but Damon needs an equal and Elena isn’t it. I look forward to Stefan finally showing his Vampiric side, it’ll be a nice change and I am sure Damon will have some interesting things to say about it. Bring back Bonnie and get rid of Caroline.

    • ash

Bonnie could be an equal to Damon, especialy when she gains control of her badass powers.

      • val

yes! I would love to see these two throw down :D

  • L.

I absolutely love this show! Damon is the best hands down.
